Show has incredible dramaturgy and forward momentum beginning to end On a rewatch, Im really soaking in how "precise" the anime adaptation translates Isayama's panels. Edits/cinematography have a lot of patience and attention to detail you don't see often in other animated shows.

The pacing and flow just feels off, I feel like this should have been two episodes. And the one girl in the middle (sorry bad with names) is also right that if it was just nonstop frenetic action like the beginning of the season you wouldn't have time to breathe and understand the world/characters. They definitely get better at doing compelling "non-action" episodes as the series goes on.

Every episode in attack on titan is important to some extent but there are some episodes which are just not as exciting as others. These episodes I agree with brig are pretty average (I like 16 though) compared to aot high standards but they also aren’t terrible episodes. Mid literally means middle aka average episodes

We don’t get a narrator introducing the world, politics, etc. instead, we see it through dramatic and interesting scenes, which requires a much higher writing skill. Also, Great character development for Jean in these episodes. We see how hard it is for the cadets to join the Survey Corps, all the risks involved and the courage needed. We’re also being introduced to the Survey Corps as a whole for the first time. Mike who sniffs people, Oluo who bites his own tongue, and Hange the experiment maniac. She might appear eccentric, but she is also empathetic, open-minded, and curious. Yes, they are eccentric but they are also heroes who have dedicated their lives to humanity. The fear of the cadets is perfectly juxtaposed to the composure of the scouts. All the nuanced interactions between characters and all the foreshadowing are also crazy. These episodes can never be called mid since the writings involved in these episodes far exceed most anime. Exposition is always needed for the climax to really hit, and AOT does it perfectly.

Some foreshadowing, some themes that are echoed throughout the series being introduced during this episode such as « what are we dying for », Erwin’s plan being set in motion, etc… Hanji’s experiment is really the only part I can get bored through during a rewatch but I am maybe missing something. On the first watch, it might be one of the few scenes that feels like it matters though haha.

It’s almost as if Brig is intentionally ruining this rewatch because almost all he does is complain, and it’s weird because it’s his wife’s first anime as well as Bradlynn and Eves. At least the girls are appreciating it, and I loved bradlynn and eves insight in the outro! Riley is also amazing! I loved these episodes because like Eve said it’s so nice and interesting to see how the rest of society works and to actually see the repercussions of the madness that was the first 13 episodes. I never thought a show would pass Game of Thrones as my favorite and Attack on Titan is comfortably the best I’ve ever seen and I can’t wait for these amazing gek girls to see what is ahead!

And the juice of these episodes are just details of the world building. So definitely watching it the first time you’re just information overload, and the second time you’re just watching out for all the foreshadowing.
