And the relief and tears of joy on his face. And once the season is over and you process everything, you get him even more and you understand exactly what was going on in his head at that time. And I love shows Chishiya's backstory and why he's so indifferent and chill about everything. He's a product of his own environment which was cold and did things unfairly to keep the hospital afloat by cheating with the lives of innocent helpless children in the process. But like others have said on here, sadly money does indeed talk and people can be full of greed and only looking after themselves. Living your life where you have to constantly think which one has more value. It's messed up. But even though, the kids with more financial gain grew up living a life of luxury and favoritism, they were still just kids who were were sick too. And the other kids who were lesser off couldn't escape poverty. I also love how Kuzuryu always wanted to be fair and do things the right way. And in the end, he kept his morals, ideals by sacrificing himself for the greater good. I'm torn between him and the King of Clubs. I really like both their perspectives and how they carried on with their integrity and good nature even in the hellish world of the Borderlands. They always wanted to be honest and fair no matter the circunstance.

He’s seen enough of ups and downs, unfairness, the cruelty of people’s lives being easily decided by others who have more money and power, and he’s been letting go of all these and accepting them the whole time in his entire life in the original world. Also, see how Chishiya always keeps his hands in the pockets in the show which is exactly what doctors usually do. It’s their professional habit. Also notice how the writer intentionally gave Chishiya white/grey/beige jackets similar to doctor’s white coats. I’m just amazed by the level of writing of this show which gives you all the little details which, when connected together, already explain so much about a character in a very efficient and economical way of storytelling.

Not only because it’s very intellectual with the mathematical thinking and it comes down to logics and not only because it’s turning into a heart game and as Carter said, Chishiya is making use of the King of Diamonds’ ideals of fairness and equality of value of life against him, but also because the two backstories that come with the game explore societal issues like wealth disparity, money talks, power of economy, and how these impact legal decisions, medical decisions and value of peoples’ lives.

Both the King of Diamonds and Chishiya’s backstories show how the world in reality works. One might think it’s totally unfair and unethical to allow the director’s friend’s kid to jump the line and one might hate that money talks for everything, but others might think differently and even accept the reality that without the financial support from the director, the hospital might not even be able to survive/ operate to save more kids. It’s such a dilemma there. Whether you would abandon your ideals and sacrifice one patient to let the hospital survive and run to save more kids (cuz who says the rich and powerful people’s kid’s life has no value?) OR whether you would do it fairly and more ethically to save the right kid in the order/list (cuz that kid’s life equally has value too) but risking the entire hospital going busted and not being able to operate anymore to save more kids is really a debatable thing. Theoretically and ideally, no kid or human being’s life should worth more than the others but is it really the case in reality? I’m certainly not the right person here to comment which one is right or wrong because this would always be debatable and everyone has a different ruler of standards. But it’s definitely not just a simple moral thing on one single person but something about the entire society. It just shows the cruel reality of how the world operates.

Chishiya’s letting the King of Diamonds to decide because he knew (or bet) that since the King of Diamonds couldn’t decide/determine the value of life (at least not the value of everyone else’s life except for his own) because of his ideal that everyone should be equal and no one’s life is above the other’s/more valuable than another, so he equally couldn’t decide the value of Chishiya’s life or even his death here. Therefore, the King ended up choosing to end his own life, which is the only thing he could do, that is to decide for himself based on his idealism.

He is totally level headed and calm at playing the games because he is entirely disconnected from whether he lives or dies. To him, he did such horrible things in his other life choosing for other people to live over those who should. Now he doesn't even blame fate should it choose that his life is next to go, since he did the same thing as a doctor. As he said 'What is the value of my life, someone who runs head first into danger'
