His plan was to find the weapon. Conquering Alabasta was a means to an end. As for Robin he didn't so much lose her as attempt to kill her, which is unrelated to Luffy.

Luffy didn't crush Crocodile's plans though. Robin did. If she'd told Crocodile the truth, he could have kept his plans going regardless of Luffy beating him up. (With some delay caused by the Marines, granted.) And this "crush their dreams" theory hinges on the belief that everyone takes Dreams as seriously as Luffy, and that any long term goal is The Dream. Which is a very Luffy way of thinking but evidently not universal in-universe.

Pell was actually supposed to be killed but the chapter where he died was right around 9/11 so oda thought it would be disrespectful to have a character die in a huge explosion like that. I disagree I still think he should have died and it still feels like a cop out. Oda just doesn’t like killing characters which is really annoying when he builds a character up and has a huge dramatic death scene only for them to be alive after the fact. Really destroys the weight of the moment

Let's goooo, I love the ending of Alabasta. Vivi's farewell and the teasing of the poneglyphs and Robin's motivations are so good. Sadly, it has Oda's greatest sin imo, with Pell's survival. I wholeheartedly agree that the fakeout deaths are the weakest aspect of the show, and Pell's is actually my least favorite of the bunch. That aspect of the show does get better overall though. Can't wait for the next little arc here! It's one of the best world-building arcs in the entire series, and the saga as a whole is very important to the story

I like to keep in mind that Oda probably had an editor or publisher whispering in his ear early on while he was writing and telling him that kids read the manga and he can't just kill people off in a kid's manga. So some of the not-deaths may seem weird because he DID kill the character off (with symbolic statues falling and everything) but some person with power over whether One Piece continued being published told him he needs to fix it. Honestly, Pell coming to find his grave and being shocked almost feels like a middle finger to whoever told Oda not to kill Pell off.

Reaction or not alot of things get explained or are leading up to a thing (like when buggy was blown away in east blue the cover stories showed how he got back with his crew to team up with Albida at Loguetown) The cover stories go over how Jango and Fullbody ended up together.

the last eps of this arc have my favorite type of moments in op, the goodbyes, bonding time, lore drops and banquets!! also, vivis speech will always make me cry, the straw hats have weird ways to show affection, it’s like that sibling type of tough love, but vivi shows love in a more cheesy and gentle way, the part where she describes them as light💔😭 I love her addition to their dynamic so much. now, bon clay… my dear bon chan😭 he’s one of my favorite side characters, I’m glad yall liked him too. the next saga is one of my favorites, i know ppl hate the pacing for the second part but compared to other arcs, it’s actually ok to me, and I agree that one pace is a good fit for you guys, i still prefer the whole saga without it tho but that’s just me loving the down time in op i guess. I just checked it and the cuts are not bad (talking about bonding or funny moments only), some are weird for me personally but it’s alright! The 8th movie is the Alabasta retelling arc, they didn’t undo Pell’s faith. They kept as it was and only include a no-dialogue scene at the end of Vivi running up and hugging Pell, smiling. She’s glad he’a alive, she isn’t like everyone here, telling Pell that he should’ve died. He did his job as a guardian deity of Alabasta.

Ever consider how Vivi would feel about Pell surviving? It’s the perfect fairy tale ending for Vivi. A long time ago i was told the reason pell lived was due to alabasta happening in the very early 2000's and having a desert character the can fly and blew himself up was a little on the nose right after 9/11 so to kinda remove any kind of resemblance between the two pell was given a second life. Theres a lot of characters that youll see who will live through the impossible but no one ever gets a death scene along with them, pell had half an episode for his death and it was clearly intended

I don't understand the whole 'Luffy doesn’t kill his opponents' hate. What Luffy does to his opponents is worse than death. He completely crushes their dreams to the point of making them unable to fulfill their lifelong evil plans. He destroys their ability to be free which Luffy thinks is far worse than dying. They then have to live with the excruciating pain, regret and disappointment of loosing against Luffy. Luffy said multiple times that he wants to be free and doesn’t mind dying while chasing his dream of freedom. He fights these villains because they are stealing his friend’s freedoms. We gotta remember that One piece is a story from Luffy's POV. To him, all these characters are as good as dead cuz he crushed their dreams and freedom. But best believe that when the first death of a character happens, y'all are gonna swallow your words cuz Oda was real diabolical about who, why and how he kills them off.

I, for one, agree with all the people saying that after Jaya, the second part of the arc should be watched with One Pace. The filler scenes and extended pauses just remove some immersion from the show. If you think of a modern anime, they're all far behind the manga so they don't have to worry about pacing and catching up, leaving you with no material and having to take a 6 month break like One Piece did. One Pace is the best version of the story whenever it drags to meet weekly quotas, the closest thing to a modern anime, and the fans are usually right about when to use it. To make up for it though, they should 100% watch the filler arc G-8 (11 eps) after this saga. It's the best filler ever made AND introduces an important character. I'll try to ask them again to watch it when we get there.

OP is a weekly anime, idk how much the anime goes on and off hiatus but Oda's been real lazy lately and taking like 3 week breaks every few months. Its not just a weekly anime though. It's a relic from the year round anime years. Its why they use to put more filler in anime. Cause running all year long runs out of content faster. Oda actually revealed at the 2008 Jump Festa that Pell was meant to die originally, but he came across this young girl reading that chapter who was crying because of his death, so he decided to revive him in the next chapter. I can't find any English sources but I'm pretty sure this is why he just suddenly appeared

I actually love these two episodes (minus pell stuff of course), Vivi's farewell is so perfect and moving without anyone needing to say too much, and her speech is amazingly touching as well. Plus we got Nico Robin now YUHH! The crew vibes are at an all time high these two episodes, and it's so fun to watch them interact with each other.

Pell not dying is maybe the most bs thing that happened in the series for me, I felt the exact same way as like you Cannon and Brig haha. Someone mentioned Oda changed it because of a terrorist attack maybe 911 that happened at the time, and that does ring a bell so I think that's why it seems so weirdly written, either way still not great writing. But again, these issues with character deaths and damage consistency really peak here in Alabasta and only get better, where Oda in my eyes achieves a perfectly reasonable balance as the series progresses. But yeah fair reaction tbh haha
