He could have like you said got a well paying job with his degree and experience but he chose not too out of sheer pride and narcissism. You see this play out throughout the whole show. You see tidbits even here in the first season when Hank tells Walt whatever happens he will help his family out if he passes and Walt takes it as an insult to his ego.

Your experience in life changes and then you have a totally different perspective. Yes, story literacy makes a difference too. But just a few years later and you already appreciate the family dynamic way more. Marriage certainly helps but just wait if you have kids. My experience the first watch was I identified with Walter just in that “I too might do anything to take care of my family” vibe. I have 2 kids who were still living at home when I watched this and I have always taken the responsibility of providing for my family Very seriously, even when I was 21. But on the re-watch I definitely defended Skylar more. I’m getting a bit ahead and referring to more of what happens in this season without specifics. I am just of the opinion, considering the ACTUAL villains that show up in this show, Skylar should NOT be the most hated character by fans 😂
