2025-01-06 16:41:07 +0000 UTCNo, he did get some of the ideas from AIB or at least the manga on which AIB is based, which came out more than 10 years ago. While it was said that he’s got the ideas for SG long time ago and was trying to make a show much earlier, no source (any writing/books) or other evidence was there to prove that he had indeed finished writing the entire scripts for SG long time ago or even before AIB/the manga of AIB. Lots of things could happen in between the period, and we all know directors/producers could always amend/adjust the original scripts for any show taking ideas from others. It’s not simply the death game idea that SG got from AIB though (to be fair, lots of Japanese shows have been doing this concept already), there’re lots of other similar ideas coming from AIB. I can’t elaborate more on this at this stage cuz I don’t want to spoil it here, but there’re definitely more similar ideas from AIB than it seems on the surface; it’s just that they’re rather expressed in a different way in SG.

The wits & heart/mind games especially carry lots of meanings. To me, while the games in AiB are fun to watch, they’re indeed more difficult and in depth than the childhood games in SG. I would say the games in AiB are more of a medium to bring out important life lessons than anything along with the story, and they certainly require one’s reflection and thinking on certain values.

Just watch closely at the hints throughout the episodes. They sprinkle in clues. Alice in Borderland is one big mind trip. Hope this helped you and you enjoy it. Im not asking for someone to spoil it obviously, Im just asking if it WILL be something that will be EVENTUALLY the point of the show? Because, if it ends up being a show about some people playing some scary games with a lot of action/death etc, but without any actual real reason behind it all for us the viewer other than to string us along for the fun ride... then I dont think I'm going to like it very much. I like Squid Game, NOT for its GAMES, but because of the way it is using THAT platform to make its social commentary. It is a perfect vehicle to show how difficult it is to change our society, especially if you are a SINGLE person trying to make that change. It is best at illustrating this point during those scenes when the players are voting if they are going to continue the games or not right after they have been shown a huge pile of cash being filled into the piggy bank. That is exactly the interesting conversation I want to have when watching a show like Squid Game. Is there going to be a conversation about anything after watching Alice in Borderland? Only seen the first episode so Im genuinely asking.

This is essentially what an anime would look like in live-action. This show is 100% cooking though and one of my all-time favorite shows. It only gets better as it goes along and a very strong hook is coming soon.

Sad to see since their older culture pretty much shaped a lot of the Hollywood we see today from Star Wars to Sergio Leone’s Dollar trilogy to Wes Anderson. Post WWII Japan following the American occupation quickly shifted their production towards high-budget animation and video games. Entertainment that is largely amazing and a reason why they have staying global influence to this day, but it is a bit disappointing to a degenerate weeb like me that the physical Japanese aesthetic is largely a relic of the past when it comes to the visual medium. Now it is just, like you said, cheap and theatrical and “fake”

So if you want a more accurate translation (as you're watching the Japanese Dub), I'd recommend English, not English CC (which I believe you currently have selected). The same can be said for Squid Game or any foreign film or TV show on Netflix with an English Dub option.

Usagi is such an important character - I bet you won’t say she’s boring again after you find out what happened the next episode👀 and get to later episodes. But yeah, she’s not the “main main” character; based on the name of the show, only Arisu (Alice) is the “main main” character. I like how this show has some good action scenes among other things. Btw, gun is not common in Asian countries including Japan, so unless they’re military or police, normal people couldn’t buy guns from stores/ wouldn’t find guns easily, so they wouldn’t be able to bring guns to the games to prepare themselves, only knifes. Aguni (the tough guy fighting) needed that guy to die because the only time he could attack the tagger is when he’s reloading his gun, so Aguni used that guy as a bait and wanted the tagger to shoot him as much as possible so that the tagger eventually ran out of bullet and then Aguni could attack him. Aguni’s not attached to or close to that random guy too - you’ll find out more later.
