If you put Atsumu in a team with Ushijima, then he is not the ideal setter, because he is gonna try to make Ushijima play like Atsumu wants, not how Ushijima wants. Meanwhile, you can put Oikawa into any team and he will play on how the team wants, not warp the team around him. Pair that with his insane jump serve, leadership and all-round game, Oikawa is in my opinion better. Purely setting technique then yeah, Atsumu clears but even there I don't think Atsumu ever does a more impressive set than Oikawa's from outside the court.

2025-01-01 16:42:13 +0000 UTComg this is such a good question to think about!! im taking into account of hinata’s middle school enthusiasm where all he wanted to do was spike the ball, so even if he was given proper training idk if he’d be able to maximise it 🤣 (i really feel like what he lacked was severely highlighted esp in s4 and bc of that he was able to see the importance of it much more clearly) imo his jump, game sense and receiving would have all been better if he had received proper training, idk if it was close to hoshiumi’s strength of a “one man army” (as the show stated) but defo hinata would’ve had a solid foundation. But then again, one of Hinata’s strengths is his speed and honestly him being paired with Kageyama got him to fully utilise that and unleash his potential so if he got training on basics and jumping + still went to karasuno, i’d say he’d be up there with hoshiumi

Ball boy arc is one of my favorites, even though there's a secondhand embarrassment when I first watched it. Showing those flashbacks while receiving the ball is amazing. In any case, to cut to the chase, Hinata receiving that spike was absolutely amazing. This is part of what the entire ball boy arc amounted to. Hinata's development as a player, and as a person, allowed him to predict the course of the ball in advance, and in turn got him his first ever "nice receive" from Kageyama. His mentality, now broadened by his time as a ball boy, has become more mature and logical during the game, and since we've seen him mess up his receives during the previous game they played already, this just goes to show how much Hinata has improved in the short span of time he had. As a player, he has been evolving slowly, and there's no doubt that whenever the team needs something to boost their morale, he's the one at the centre of such an occurrence. Literally, he's one of my favourite shounen main characters ever. I adore every single part of him😭 Osamu's analogy about food at the end always gets me so hyped. It's so true. Eating food always gives me a sense of happiness unlike anything else, and it never goes away. Hinata's love for volleyball and thirst for the game just keeps growing bigger and deeper, and it's SO GOOD to see that same spirit extend to the rest of the team. He's always lifting everyone up, be it opponents or Karasuno, and it's a delight to see it happen. I can't wait for the next episodes!!

2025-01-01 13:59:20 +0000 UTCCannon saying "please" when Kinoshita goes to serve is so funny when you know he used to always say "Who's this NPC??" whenever he showed up HAHAHA I love the Hero episode because it shows that even if you can't have an amazing moment of epic proportions and contribution in the game, you can still be a hero in a diff way. In this case, since Nishinoya pointed to Kinoshita as thanks for helping him out of the slump of fear that he was in, Kinoshita WAS a hero, TO Noya. Because without his encouragement and his reminder, Noya might have fumbled that serve again and caused them to lose that possibly game-changing point. The poetic relationships and how they tie into the games in Haikyuu are always superb. Furudate never wastes a flashback on a useless whim, it's always purposeful, meaningful and emotional, just like in this episode. Regarding Atsumu's backstory, I think it's perfectly fine to want the opposing team to lose or not like them. I have a feeling the reason you guys don't vibe so much with Atsumu is because of his personality. But putting that aside, you can never deny the amount of talent, hard work and dedication he has for the sport. When Atsumu explains he did that crazy set because he wanted to use all ten of his fingers instead of just his two forearms, it is a testament to his play ethic as a setter. Most people would have gone with the easier option, the underhanded set, but he didn't, because he knows an overhead set is the best. He can control much more and put in a lot more effort into his set, which he's undoubtedly proud of. His and Osamu's relationship is one of the fandom's favourite, not just because they are uniquely competitive and push each other, but also because of how much unspoken affection there is btw them. They know each other so well that even an insult can tell the other twin how one is feeling. The fact that Osamu takes no shit from Atsumu is one thing, but it's another thing when he intentionally drags Atsumu back into social life, whether forcefully or pretending to be annoying. As brothers, they compliment each other in ways many of us wouldn't understand. And ofc, there is the hard-hitting line from Osamu, as he confesses that he doesn't love volleyball as much as Atsumu does, which again ties into Aran's thoughts about Atsumu scaring him at times. The level of dedication and passion for the sport that each twin puts in is slightly different, but it makes all the more obvious whose presence on the court is most noticed and who is the one who will without question continue to be noticed in the future. I just think it's such an ingenious thing to put Atsumu (aggressive, loud, annoying, but holds more love for the sport than anything, whose setting philosophy is making his sets easiest for his spider to hit, and to be offended if his spiker isn't putting in the same amount of effort as he does into the game, because if they don't do it, it undermines HIS effort as their setter) against Kageyama (quiet when setting, has difficulty communicating what he wants to his team, unlike Atsumu, and whose setting philosophy is to break down the walls in front of his spikers for them to score using his insane skills as a setter). Their juxtaposition is very much an opposition of setting philosophies, and it's always fascinating to compare them, their personalities, their skills, and their mentalities in this game. Also, shit this was long asf HDJDJSJSJ I'm sorry about that!

I think Suga definitely has a setter’s disposition - in the beginning he basically went to the first years, said: yo these are MY signs you better use them for the matches! he constantly strategizes no matter if he plays or sits on the bench, gives advice, is VERY much aware of the game flow and the condition of the hitters… he is just not that aggressive with it. And if you want to compete at a higher level, you HAVE to be aggressive with it. But he knows that, which is surprisingly self aware for a 17 year old boy. 😂

At the end of the day, vb is a team sport and oikawa was THE BEST reading his setters and giving them what they needed. Atsumu’s been hated by his previous spikers way too much, same with kageyama in middle school 🥴🥴 technique wise thoughhh, and considering his attitude towards setting, I’d say the best is Atsumu.

2025-01-01 08:40:49 +0000 UTCWatching episode 22 just reminded me that Atsumu’s love for the game is another thing that I find so endearing about him. The only characters who get that giddy like little kids where volleyball is concerned are Hinata and Bokuto, which is probably why all three of them are in my top 10. Like when Atsumu set the ball to Osamu who then set it back to Aran. Atsumu’s face in that moment, when his brother didn’t spike but set it back instead, was so gleeful, I could feel how much he just enjoys the game. Anyway, Hinata’s first real receive was so nicely done, I love it every time I see it. Though the point went to Inaziraki, the following relay was as magnificent as the one they'd had against Oikawa's team when they did win the point. These episodes have really made me want to read the manga again 😅

But when they are good? Ah man, there is literally nothing better to watch than your team CLICK after you get the ball up so they could run circles around the other team with a good setter on point. As Kageyama said, setters are the best (after liberos of cousre lol 😂)

He doesn’t hesitate to call people out for slacking when he’s working his ass off, cause be fr I need that kind of energy while I was doing those nasty group projects in college. People couldn’t even do their parts properly and because I’m the one who wants a good grade I end up being the one whos doing majority of the grinding (even if those grpmates did shit, it was usually so half assed so I still had to fix it 😭). I ain’t a confrontational person when I need to be and that sucks big time 🤡 also baby atsumu saying “so?” with his mouth full of rice is so adorable lmao

We get to see how talent and drive play out in exceptional setters through the series: Oikawa got insecure, was driven to the point of a serious knee injury and almost assaulting a teammate and underclassman, but he had Iwaizumi to make him accountable, get him to focus and be the best version of himself. Atsumu got alienated because he held everyone to the same standards as himself, and THAT coupled with his almost non-existent communication skills and hard-to-get-along personality got him in trouble with his teammates, but he had Osamu to check him and fold him into a productive team dynamic. Kageyama? Kageyama had NO ONE until he got to Karasuno and started to play with Hinata. Man, I love Haikyuu.

The thing about atsumu is, he’s not written to be a stereotypical likeable character like most of the boys in karasuno. There’s always something about “flawed” but “genuine” characters that appeal to people, albeit not immediately. I assume that while some like atsumu from the get go, most who do are from at least the second watch. And many of those screaming “husband” while really like his character, prolly don’t have him as their top 1 favourite. He may not be most people’s top 1 fav, he is still top FEW favourites. He’s childish but passionate, super good yet tactless, wears his heart of his sleeve, true to himself and not trying to appeal to people (his saying “so what” in response to people not liking him). His respect and pure excitement watching Hinata, top it off with his superior character design, if you think this through, it’s no surprise people are screaming husband.

2025-01-01 02:36:17 +0000 UTCThese 2 episode were actual PURE CINEMA! -I love how we got a different look at what it means to help the team win through Kinoshita and it was soooo cool to have Nishinoya of all people point at him and celebrate together -The twins are such a cool reflection of Hinata and Kageyama and how much better they could've now been if they knew each other say from elementary school because the twins obviously are together from the womb and their competitiveness is what got them so far. Also, love the Osamu appreciation. -Hinata's receive always always makes me tear up. All that hard work finally paid off her. Not only does he receive but his attitude is what brings the team out of the trenches.
