It has been hinted at since season 1 constantly, the Claudia Bernd scenes are so cryptic. The substance itself being so important to the entire show. Then season 3 we get introduced to the trio, they burn down Adam's HQ first scene so instantly imposing. Next kill Bernd and get master keys to plant. Then kill Claudias assistant and get the schematics for the VCS, then threaten the guy for building permit of the plant itself, then split up to go to both worlds and trigger the incident in both at the same time. For me the end of ep 6+ep7 is my favorite 90 mins of cinema ever haha.

Eve knows there are 2 Martha realities (the one that gets killed and the one that is her and gives birth to Origin), she also knows there are 2 Jonas versions. But Jonas doesn't know about 2 Marthas. All he knows one of the Jonas goes to the other world. Adam himself doesn't know this Martha, so it is easy for him to kill her. Also Origin is the cause of apocalypse in both world, as you see there is a split screen. They cause it in both world

I also see Martha has the mother perspective, she wants the knot to survive because the knot is literally her child, so she wants him to live no matter the cost, in this case suffering from others and the nice dude killing people in every time and verse to preserve the cycle.

I don't subscribe to the anti-natalist position that Adam seems to hold, that living is suffering, therefore it's better to not exist. I would say that breaking the knot without the consent of those living affected is most definitely evil. Better to have lived, laughed and suffered than to not have lived at all. Imo :)

While at first sight this might make Adam look evil and leading a path of destruction, in contrast to Eve which represents preservation. This is incorrect, Eve seems adamant and preserving a world where only a very few survive in a desolate world, namely her and her cohorts; in my opinion this is purely selfish and egoistical. Adam on the other hand is looking to break the suffering entirely by destroying the cycle, the knot. This is a very Schopenhauerian world view and Adam is the most sensible person in the room. If you can't fix things no matter how you try --And jonas tried alot-- the best decision to make is to end it all. No cycle == No suffering

This season we saw since episode 1 the Origin trio getting the pieces to make it happen. Master key, system schematics, building permit for the plant etc. Funny the thing Bernd was obsessed with covering up is what they come to kill him for. Apocalypse triggering = For Adam's world - Opening of the barrels, Elizabeth overloading the particle in the power plant future (2053), plus Fran and Magnus overloading the one in the Church in the past (1921), plus Jonas having reopened the passage (1987-2020) Eva's world, it is - Ulrich opening the passage, The Origin trio triggering the Volumetric control system incident (Hinted at since season 1 and a huge slow burn plot detail as the source of the substance!) Adam overloading the machine in his world, and the barrels being opened. The amount of stuff happening to trigger each apocalypse is so cool.

2024-12-04 06:22:14 +0000 UTCI'm only like a minute into the post watch debrief but I just wanted to clarify that the unknown (Martha and Jonas' kid) didn't cause the apocalypse in that scene, if you look at the bus stop when the three of them go off to the power plant in both universes at the end you can see that they're in 1986. So it's showing that basically in both worlds they were the ones to trigger the "accident" in 1986 that creates the cesium substance that allows for time travel in the first place. The apocalypse is triggered years later in both worlds just by releasing the substance (by either Clausen or Aleksander). I didn't realize this until my first rewatch but yeah they go back to 1986 to cause the initial accident that creates the substance for the God particle in the first place. Man this show is so good.
