2024-10-10 06:54:06 +0000 UTCThe first scene of this show is the discovery of the white walkers by a few members of the night's watch. Yet the story gets wrapped up in a single fight that doesn't make it past Winterfell lol. So much for the long night.
Matt Haloostock
2024-10-10 06:46:32 +0000 UTCHow does that make any sense? lol
Matt Haloostock
2024-10-10 06:41:25 +0000 UTCHow do so many major characters survive? Brienne, Jaimie, Tormund, the Hound (and don't even get me started on Sam) all get surround and mauled to the ground multiple times but somehow don't face any life threatening injuries. What the fuck are the wights doing, hugging them? lmao. Jon falls off a dragon, gets up and starts running and then gets surrounded by hundreds of wights but somehow comes out with a slight limp. Dany sits on the ground without a care in the world as if her and Drogon aren't a massive target. The literal episode before, Jon says we can't beat them in a straight fight and yet they send the entire Dothraki hoard out to a straight fight. I guess they wanted to grow the army of the dead. The writing is so lazy and has a complete lack of respect for the show before it. I do not know how anyone can defend the writing of the show after this episode. Apart from a couple of good character moments, it's completely abysmal.

But i know that the more you rewatch GOT the uglier it gets, like comparing this to season 1 to 4 its like comparing water to piss

2024-10-06 23:50:10 +0000 UTCI was basically saying that if they don't read the books and find those theories, and they aren't finished, the show sure as hell didn't reveal it either.
Lady Stoneheart (Uncat)
2024-10-06 20:46:47 +0000 UTCIt's not shown in the show, and is only a theory from the books. But if showrunners were given insight (and the money ig), they could have revealed why one way or other. Unless George didn't tell them at all, which might be my guess. But the theory is to wake an army of dead Starks and possible other northmen to defend them in the long night.

2024-10-06 20:12:07 +0000 UTCYeah I was joking a lil, I know he got some good kills during the battle for the Wall, but he doesn’t have many at all. And Samwell mf Tarly killed a White Walker 💀 I’m being fr, both of them got some thick plot armor. Love Jon’s skill but it’s disappointed me often.

2024-10-06 17:38:07 +0000 UTCThere are def some great shots! Could you imagine this done in competent hands? Would’ve been probably the best episode of any show on television ever!
Daenerys Targaryen
2024-10-06 17:06:56 +0000 UTCOn 2nd watch, the actual battles weren’t as bad as I remembered but the way the Night King went out was still so infuriating. Also, Jon screaming at a dragon, I’ll admit, was top 3 goofiest scenes in the whole show. Jon deserved at least the 1v1 even if he didn’t kill the night king. They were teasing the crap out of it and building up his beef with the night king for at least 3-4 seasons. On top of that, the whole Prince that was promised prophesy ended up being irrelevant af cause neither Jon nor Dany ended up being the reason the NK perished in the end.
lola
2024-10-06 16:20:14 +0000 UTCI agree that Arya killing the night king made a bit more sense seeing as Arya spent all of like 2 seasons being blind just so she could train to be a many faced god. But you CANNOT say Jon has no notable dubs. Yeah he lacked experience and he was an honorable fighter when he fought the Gin Alley guy but he also learned from his mistake and was able to kill the Magnar of the Thenns in the battle for the wall. He also killed a White Walker. Be so foreal rn.

2024-10-06 04:51:46 +0000 UTCArya cooked again 🐐🔥 I don’t know why people think Jon should’ve killed the Night King, does he have a single notable dub all series? And Jon’s top 3 for me but Arya had all the build up, and the skill to execute the Night King in the final moment, with her training as no one. Jon lost to a dude from Gin alley, Arya beat Brianne of mf Tarth… there’s levels to this 🤷🏽♂️

2024-10-05 16:50:49 +0000 UTCKit Harrington the actor who plays John was injured filming 8x1. A lot of what you are seeing for him had to be shifted around because of the injury. His stunt double is doing all of the actual fighting, running, jumping in this episode. But Kit has said in many interviews how angry he was when he found out he wasn’t the one to kill the Night King. Kit went into in patient therapy as soon as he finished filming the last episode. He has done a lot of interviews over the years discussing how he feels about season 8 and John’s part in it.

2024-10-05 15:23:13 +0000 UTCExactly Mitch, D & Ds main reasoning behind Jon not being the one to kill the night king had NOTHING to do with story, "It just didn't feel right" to them... smh. That's honestly a really good comparison of Chewbacca and Darth Vadar. I'm sure they still have the after credit parts of the episodes where the producers explain the reasoning behind decisions in episodes, so even if the Geks don't react on Patreon to those, I feel like they should still watch them to hear all the BS behind D & Ds decisions. Especially considering whats coming up with the infamous "Dany kinda forgot about the...."

2024-10-05 14:51:19 +0000 UTCIt’s predictable because it had 8 seasons of foreshadowing and build with him as the main hero. Just because it was predictable that Jon would be the one to kill the night king doesn't make it bad or cheap writing. It was predictable because it made sense

2024-10-05 02:57:02 +0000 UTCI agree with you with the importance of that but I don’t think anyone is downplaying the importance of that. The writers downplayed the importance of that. If that is what the audience was meant to get from this epic episode then I agree that it could have been Jons true moment. Instead we get a moment that feels rushed and undeserved, a moment stolen from Jon. I think that’s why people are upset. But I agree with what you said, however, to make the audience happy, this moment that should have been THE MOMENT, it needed to be developed through the writers and directors far better than it was. And to fix that, all they needed was one thing, just one thing written better-a better strategy, better tactics, better character dialogue/communication and more episodes to make it worth it. 4 things I guess.

2024-10-05 02:51:53 +0000 UTCTo me, I live that Arya killed the nightking. Her sneaky ass got him! Jon was meant to bring. Everyone together which he did. People downplay the importance of that. Him killing nightking would have been way too predictable. Arya been training for this stealthy mission.. I love how she dropped the daggar and got him with other hand- nust like the Brianne foreshadow. Perfect. The music is awesome also. Jorah and Theon dying broke my heart.

2024-10-04 20:32:16 +0000 UTCI hate this ep so much. I need to say, when I can see it, it is well directed with great choreography. But battle is shit, from tactical point of view. WTF was that? You have walls, use them. Who came up with this??? Plot armor is crazy strong, no significant deaths in fight this big. They were literally on top of them in that one scene... I didn't want my favorite characters to die, but WTF is this? Also, why can I not see half the scenes? Who thought that was a good idea? John hiding behind the rock, and we know this dragon destroyed the wall. I would not even be mad that Arya killed NK if it was foreshadowed just a bit. Dumb & Dumber wanted to "subvert expectations", they literally said it. It was too obvious if Joh killed it. Also, who puts ppl in crypt when fighting the dead. So f stupid. All characters lost around 50IQ from first seasons. It is soo dumb, I am getting mad over a show. Go touch grass or something, I know. But good part of my life I spent watching this show, cheering for characters, watching them grow, crafting theories, sharing this love for the show with my friends. This whole season is one big f you to the fans. Worst thing is, it just gets worse from here. I did not believe it possible, but it does.

2024-10-04 14:07:24 +0000 UTCI love Arya but this was so unsatisfying. It was Jon's entire storyline having beef with Night King and uniting everyone against him, it should've been a last big 1v1 between them. I also think a lot more characters should've died. That way it could've been more satisfying, like only a few characters left alive and Jon and NK having the final showdown. This way it all felt way too easy.

2024-10-04 12:24:17 +0000 UTC@Mysterious Figure. You just watched an episode where the Night King conjured up a storm to blast Jon and Dany's dragons away from his White Walkers, and in which he was enable to freeze the wood in the trenches so much that the fire arrows loosed to light it all got snuffed out on contact. When the White Walkers appear it always get appreciably colder, so the ice freezing on the lake above the Wall was inevitable, no extra magic required. Do you even watch the show? :D

2024-10-04 11:48:31 +0000 UTCSorry the dump on your dreams but we're not getting TWOW much less ADOS as GrrrrM clearly has no interest in finishing the books, much less the whole series. His Dunc & Egg books were only novellas but he can't even get another one of them done. Which is a shame, as they would have culminated in the tragedy at Summerhall, and I would have loved to read about those events. I'm just hoping that when GrrrrM is no longer with us his publishers commission someone to complete ASOIAF in recompense for the fat advance they gave him for TWOW with no return.

2024-10-04 11:29:32 +0000 UTCAs far as Ara getting passed the white walkers, I think she was there before them. After her talk with Melisandre she went straight to Bran and was hiding, which is why they demonstrated her being able to be stealth around the whits. I think they wanted it to be so unexpected that they opted to not show her getting there first and it just created a huge plot gap
Smokey
2024-10-04 11:25:26 +0000 UTCfor instance, why are there not archers constantly firing arrows once they got to the trenches, the dothraki charge is one of the worst plans ever, why was there only one trench, they needed more trenches, they needed the dothraki to surprise attack during when the whites sieged on winterfell, hit them from the sides or something, and jon killing the night king isnt on the nose at all, “the prince that was promised will bring the dawn” which is jon, bring the dawn is ending the long night, george rr martin wrote jon as the prince 100%
Caleb
2024-10-04 11:23:57 +0000 UTCUpon review i think youll start to see the holes in this shiteshow, yes there are so many amazing shots and it looks beautiful but the battle itself, the plan of how they defend is absolutely horrid screenplay, either on the characters part of the writers part

2024-10-04 10:45:26 +0000 UTCbullet points for the episode -Bran playing league of legends on VR the whole episode -Jon yelling at a dragon AAAAAAAAA -Everyone who is needed for conflict with Cercei has plot armor, while all others are free to die -Night King ultra aura as always -Arya the prince who was promised -Dothraki kamikaze maneuver the cgi was great, the music was great, characters are incredibly stupid and everybody lost 50% iq points since season 4-5, white walker stuff was handled poorly. overall its a shame, the show could've been breaking bad+ tier, only if Dumbass&Dumbass dropped ego and hired competent writers to help them out from season 5 onwards ❤👏

2024-10-04 10:35:20 +0000 UTCTheres some good parts about this episode and you'll start to think about them/realize once the shock and awe wears off. Theres some good videos on youtube about how the whole army set up doesn't make sense and even a 'rewrite' of the entire season once you've completely finished the show.

2024-10-04 09:50:15 +0000 UTCThis is exactly what I hate about a lot of aspects of George's writing: his moral relativism is grating at times. Sometimes a bad guy is just a bad guy and needs to be defeated.

2024-10-04 09:43:06 +0000 UTCI try not to be so negative on here because it all really doesn't matter so just believe me when I say this is some of the most mind-numbing fan fiction to fill in for something never once hinted at or conveyed I've ever seen.

2024-10-04 09:31:37 +0000 UTCThere's a lot to be said about this episode but I'll just stick to one point: I think Jon should've actually fought the dragon and killed it before the Night King dies. Like if they wanted to say Arya had subtle foreshadowing to kill him and subvert classic fantasy tropes, sure, whatever. But Jon needed to do something in my opinion and killing Viserion would be no small feat, as opposed to standing there screaming at it. Even just put up a good fight and get saved with his back against the ropes would be fine.

2024-10-04 08:14:04 +0000 UTCI honestly don’t even so much care that it was Arya as I care how it was executed. At least all that training was for something. 🤷♀️ But why was it THAT easy???

2024-10-04 08:04:34 +0000 UTCI'm gonna play devils advocate here. I feel like George is the same way. I haven't followed since the end of the show and I believe he has said that no one I has guess the ending. I feel like people have and he doesn't like it and that's why it's taking so long to finish the books because he is trying to change the ending to be something else. Also in the books Jon may come back a darker version of himself. We don't know what's in the card with his character in the books. We don't even know if he's coming back for sure. I blame D&D a lot but I also blame George for not finishing the books. And he's still not finishing to redeem this show. I truly feel like he's gonna have them finish after he passes away to avoid the backlash. Because I feel his ending won't be good either

2024-10-04 07:59:32 +0000 UTCBeen here since AoT over a year ago, and I've been here specifically since GoT 1x1. Sadly, we've made it to where we are now... I had a whole thing prepared for this episode but what's the point. There's just the 7 regulars that are gonna bitch about whatever I have to say. I'll leave you with this... While I was watching Star Wars: The Last Jedi for the first time, I was about 3/4 through the film, and had come to the conclusion that they had completely fucked the whole franchise, but then Finn was about to sacrifice himself by kamakaze-ing into the giant laser thingy. I was like, "Oh shit no way this is fucking sick." In a half-ass attempt to justify the shit I had sat through and perhaps even redeem it to the point where it really wasn't as shit as I thought it was. If the film had the fucking balls to do something like this, I can look past all previous mishaps. Then Rose comes in and shunts him out of the way. "Oh wait... this movie is still complete shit..." Similarly in this show, when the swarm of wights were descending on the crew after the decimation of the Dothraki cavalry, numerous semi-main characters are absolutely bombarded. Brienne - dead. Jaime - dead. Sam - dead. Tormund - dead. I was like, "Oh fuck, is nearly everyone going to die this episode????? Let's gooo. This is ittt. I'm totally okay with this." Next scene - Brienne - still fighting and fine. Jaime - still fighting and fine. Sam - still fighting and fine. Tormund - still fighting and fine. "Oh wait... this show is still complete shit..." Regardless of your thoughts about this show, all I'm saying is that these moments gave me the exact same reaction/emotion. Potential redemption followed by more of the same/complete disappointment. In my eyes, they had a slight moment to actually do something and... nah lets just stick to the plan we've been runnin with... Sorry for all the (I'm certain there are) spelling mistakes. I've been pullin an all nighter finishing up this client's account. I'm super drunk and there's no way I'm watching season 8 sober.
Paul Durbin
2024-10-04 07:49:51 +0000 UTCThe entire show they build up Jon Vs. The Night King, then Dumb & Dumber (David & Dan) have Arya LITERALLY FLYING in to kill him... Such lazy writing IMO... And their reasoning was, "everyone expected it to be Jon, so we wanted to do something nobody expected." (something along those lines). LIKE WHAT!? loI I guess the Lord of light brings Jon back to life for no reason then...cool

2024-10-04 07:32:57 +0000 UTCIt's kinda weird that you guys look at the ratings before watching the episodes, you would have 0 expectations of the last the 3 episodes but knowing that they are like 4-6/10 your expecting the worse of every situation.

2024-10-04 07:27:00 +0000 UTCJorah's last scene always kills me he is so loyal to the end. I honestly think more main characters should have died, it would've made more sense but the plot armour is insane in the show especially the last few seasons. I also didn't mind the fact that it wasn't Jon who killed the night king because it leaves the question of who is the prince/princess that's promised open for interpretation, like someone said it would've been too on the nose.

2024-10-04 07:18:38 +0000 UTC1. I don’t own panties 2. If I did own panties they wouldn’t be in a wad 3. Jon yelling at the dragon is not shown to provide any extra help to Arya getting to the night king, he literally stands up to face the dragon because he has given up, Arya and Jon are in separate locations at this point

2024-10-04 06:52:34 +0000 UTCAlso Arya was already in the Godswood. She was waiting for him the whole time after the Milensandre scene. She knew he was going to Bran. So she was waiting there. Ok I'm done now

I'm gonna say but Jorah is the best knight to me. That man has so much willpower. He was old af but always protected his Khaleesi. Thank you to the North and Dany and her crew they saved Westoros
Ana
2024-10-04 06:30:42 +0000 UTCI thought Arya was already waiting up in the tree, which is why when she attacked the night king, she came down from above. Also in the books it seems there isn't a night king, at least what I heard.
CoLdBITeR
2024-10-04 06:26:45 +0000 UTCI'm sad that once the books are finished, there won't be a show adaptation of the canon ending to the series, as well as many other tremendously important events throughout the story. Hopefully, they'll create a high-budget animated series, similar to the Witcher animated movies but in show form. GRRM needs to cook! Overall, the cinematography of this episode was incredible, but it was far from perfect. Here are some of the major issues: 1. The Night King's intentions should have been clearer. 2. Jon should have killed the Night King, fulfilling the prophecy of "The Prince That Was Promised." 3. The White Walkers and the Night King should have been more prevalent throughout the battle. 4. More magic should have been used by both Melisandre and Bran. 5. More people should have died, and there should have been more wights. 6. It should have taken longer to defeat the Night King. All in all, despite the moments and seasons of poor writing since season four, Game of Thrones' peak is far beyond any show I have ever seen. Best show and my favorite story of all time!

2024-10-04 05:21:17 +0000 UTCThe worse thing about this season that Cersei was more of a big bad than the Night king. Like huuuuh...? Everyone says Arya killing the night king was no build up but they guessed her as one of the options in the intro. 😂😂😂😂

2024-10-04 05:07:35 +0000 UTCI would still 100% recommend the books, they haven't done any character justice in the show. You get to learn so much the lore and history. Plus new characters like Young griff, lady stoneheart aka Catelyn resurrected and Arianne Martell. The books have a lot to offer

2024-10-04 05:00:27 +0000 UTCGood luck stealth killing a guy on a dragon lol come on now. There was no moment before where someone could have snuck up on him, except for when he fell off the dragon and someone was hiding among the bodies maybe lol it was fate and the single moment of everyone coming together that could make it happen in that single moment. Lord of light saw her role and resurrected a man 6 times to be able to save 1 girl 1 time. If the show wasnt rushed to shit, I think this decision would have gone over much more smoothly. She wasn't my first pick to be the one to do it, but I dont hate how she did it or got there.

2024-10-04 04:46:42 +0000 UTCIt's not defending when it just isn't an issue to someone lol can't defend a non problem! I get the sentiment completely on not wanting Arya to be the one to do it. She wasn't my first pick either. But her being sneaky is a very much non issue lol she's been doing that for like half the series.

2024-10-04 04:27:53 +0000 UTCIt is always easy to spot people who haven't read the books. The books are so good, and characters are SO vastly different in them. Show bias really makes me not want to participate in community conversations, because so many people misrepresent the characters I know well, because all they know are the show counterparts.

2024-10-04 04:26:20 +0000 UTCGeorge R.R. Martin has said that Melisandre is his most misunderstood character. What you have to remember about her is that she is a fanatic. And as a fanatic, she believes that her actions are justified because she is serving a righteous purpose. And that’s how you end up with her committing atrocities. It is the ultimate outcome of believing the ends justify the means. But at her core, she believes she is serving mankind. And some of her actions do have positive outcomes.

2024-10-04 04:18:51 +0000 UTCAgreed! I believe Cersei will be long gone from King’s Landing before Daenerys arrives. I honestly don’t see the two of them ever ending up having a major conflict. But that will be the result of certain characters whose storyline the television show completely cut out.

2024-10-04 04:16:05 +0000 UTCWe have seasoned battle commander Jamie, Right hand man to the greatest tactician to ever exist (Stannis) in Davos. Experienced warriors in Jorah, grey worm, briene and the hound. And not a single one knows the kindergarten basics of how cavalry are supposed to be used in battle? How catapults are supposed to be behind walls? Literally the episode prior Jon says “we can’t beat them in a straight fight” and what is the first thing we do in this battle? Send out 10,000+ Dothraki to their deaths to try and beat them in a straight fight. GENIUS!

2024-10-04 03:29:34 +0000 UTCI feel like people who haven't read the books say that lol....bc show Jon, Dany, Tyrion, Sansa, Euron and Arya, actually a lot of characters are REALLY DIFFERENT to their books counterparts. Not to mention Daenerys is a dreamer and has visions all the time. And there's A LOT of magic in the books. I don't think show watchers know how different the books are. Dany is suppose to be antithesis to the Targaryens which is definitely not the route the show took. The ending will be different.

2024-10-04 03:27:32 +0000 UTCThoughts about Jon are mixed on this one. On one hand I wish he’d done more because he and the knight king stared each other down too many times to not fight one on one. On the other hand, it makes sense that the knight king would avoid a one on one with Jon after he watched him kill that white with longclaw @ hardhome. Also makes sense that Jon would lay low, being that he’s too important to get killed by the army of the dead when he could be looking out for and pursuing the knight king and white walkers in order to wipe them all out at once. He may not have been the star of the fighting on the ground but the knight king would’ve gotten into winterfell way faster without him and Dany slowing him down. I think all of what he did before this episode to spread awareness and unite enemies is where he fulfilled the prophecy for the long night.
ShanB
2024-10-04 03:24:23 +0000 UTCA lot do people were disappointed because they build John up since the beginning having stare downs with the night king brought him back to life unite the north linked with danny just to barley do anything in the final battle but yell at a dragon yess epic scenes and battle to me it wasn’t bad but a lot of people were disappointed
Renaldo Allard
2024-10-04 03:22:37 +0000 UTCGorge RR Martin said that he had written approximately 1,100 to 1,200 pages of the book and that roughly 400–500 pages remained to be written the last 2 books are Winds of Winter' and 'A Dream of Spring'. If he dies before completing the book someone will finish his work I think his friend forgot his name

2024-10-04 03:11:48 +0000 UTCAgreed. As much as I would’ve loved them showing or hinting to us how Arya got to him , I didn’t need it because I do feel like it adds more purpose to us watching her skill set expand over the years. 2024-10-04 02:58:54 +0000 UTCI hate this episode for more reasons then I can adequately express. And while I enjoy watching GOT reactions, I typically don’t watch this episode. But I had to see the reaction from these guys. It is quite a spectacle on an initial viewing. As someone who is always bringing up the books, I am completely sure that the White Walkers, who in the books are generally referred to as the Others, will be a more bigger problem in the books and probably threaten much more of Westeros geographical.

2024-10-04 02:47:52 +0000 UTCIt’s really unfortunate that D&D rushed the series to end it. I’m sure at some point Arya spoke with Bran & Jon about the WWs & NK to learn as much as possible about them. Her skills while training to be a faceless man gave her the ability to do what she did. I guess we just have to use our imagination to fill in the blanks since D&D didn’t help much with that. I loved Arya’s story arc. She was my fav character from the beginning, so I’m kinda biased and was quite happy that she was the one to end the NK. If only G Martin would have finished the damn book!

2024-10-04 02:29:20 +0000 UTCI get being hopeful, but I do think a lot of these elements you're seeing in the end is absolutely what GRRM had planned to do lol Now he would have gotten there a lot smoother with way better writing and dialogue, and hopefully keep our favorites still as smart characters (looking at you Jon and Tyrion s7-8 versions) But he did give the directors an idea of how it ends. They probably butchered what he had in mind, but I also think he's scared to now follow that path because of how poorly received it was. Now all he does is write reviews about adaptations instead of finishing what he started lol

2024-10-04 02:15:38 +0000 UTCShe got the dagger, it's a fair guess. 2024-10-04 02:13:54 +0000 UTCI will also just say that my gripes with the final seasons are purely the pacing. There is something so anticlimactic about the overwhelming threat to the human race being eradicated with a single stab in just ONE episode

For being a 1.5 hour episode of non stop battle, it is pretty suspenseful and good (despite the darkness), but it could still be so much better. While this was great, I can only imagine how the actual final battle in the books will play out, and I anticipate it being so much more intense and fulfilling. 2024-10-04 00:21:13 +0000 UTC100% agree. I think the Long Night should of been longer, like one battle and THE biggest threat to humanity is over? It would of been cool if the living were decimated at Winterfell and they had to retreat to Kings Landing over multiple episodes, meanwhile the Dead are just absolutely annihilating half of Westeros. The concept of Dread and the realisation that Great War is un-winnable by just killing the enemy, Also, GRRM always said that history is murky and that he never liked Good overcoming Evil through battle alone, and that every character is complex and grey (including the Night King). A lot of readers think that the ending to the Long Night is because of some kind of Pact with the White Walkers that had happened at the first Long Night. I like the idea that the Night King is some ancient Stark or something and there is some kind of purpose for his trek South after 1000s of years which is only resolved by an agreement or some ancient "Promise".

2024-10-03 23:54:30 +0000 UTCLet's not forget that the White Walkers have been a looming threat for over 8000 years in the GoT lore, from before the Age of Heroes and founding of most of the houses in the current era. The founder of the Starks literally sectioned off the north of the known world to keep them out, and designed Winterfell to shelter the North when they finally came for humanity. And they get defeated in a few hours by a rag tag collection of forces, who barely use the fortress, and a girl with a few months of assassin training with a dagger who just found out they exist a week before and had never even seen one of them until then.

2024-10-03 23:48:50 +0000 UTCIt should have been the Helms deep or Gondor of GoT. A great siege against one of the strongest castles in Westeros with multiple layers of defence, each as strong as the last one, built to protect the north and shelter all the villagers of the nearby town and its own occupants, near indefinitely, with the White walkers in mind. Said to have been built by Brandon the builder, who built the Ice wall as well as many other famous structures in Westeros, then expanded and reinforced over the next 8000 years. It ended up kind of more of a backdrop.

2024-10-03 23:37:18 +0000 UTCI think many of us were really hoping for a helms deep type battle, as especially in the books it builds up Winterfell to be this great fortress, a bastion in the north, and they just kind of sit everyone out front, then the undead breach the walls almost instantly.

2024-10-03 23:31:26 +0000 UTCWe have a super strong castle and catapults, if we hold the walls we have a great chance! - Nah lets assemble our troops outside in the open in the most ANTI-TACTICAL (TM) battle lines humanly possible to conceive lmao. 2024-10-03 23:28:21 +0000 UTCI think the issue is the wasted potential. It's entertaining to watch out of context, and I don't think there's anything wrong with enjoying it. I think there's some great acting, music and set pieces. The issue is that in context this was supposed to be the finale. The moment every thing had being leading up to, which essentially made the Game of thrones nothing but a trivial matter. The thing the north had built into their very culture. The greatest stronghold of the north, vs the army set to wipe out humanity. The arrival of Winter. We should have got a Helm's Deep type battle. A great siege with them actually using the fortress. The Dothraki coming from behind in a heroic but doomed attempt to break the Siege. The unbreakable Unsullied defending the walls, with the Northern archers. The assault from within the crypts fought off by the wildlings, the heroic last stand of Theon opening the way for Arya, an epic dragon fight with Bran taking control of a dragon. Some revelation over the meaning behind the patterns that've made us think were significant from the start. And it was missing the unexpected ally coming in to save the moment, like maybe an army of the north from those who refused to go to Winterfell attacking from behind and just doing enough to allow those in the fortress to regroup. There were just so many missed opportunities, and in the end the greatest threat to all life in Westeros felt no more epic in scale than the battle of Blackwater, or the battle of the Bastards, and is just kind of done and over with halfway through the season so we can get back to Cersei and whatever the hell her plan is. It could have done with a little more set up too, but that's an issue with both season 7&8 just feeling a little rushed. As a bit of a history buff there were some annoyances too like some egregious armour physics, awful tactics and a complete misuse of a castle, but you get that with most movies.

2024-10-03 22:52:01 +0000 UTCBefore the series ended, there was a compelling theory that Bran was actually the Night King, trapped in the Night King's body for 8,000 years, waiting for the moment he could touch and warg back into his own body to break the original ritual. The theory suggests that Bran, using his greenseer abilities, traveled back in time to uncover the origins of the White Walkers to find a way to defeat them. Along the way, he influenced the past by warging into various historical figures, like Bran the Builder, who was said to have built the Wall. His journey took him further back, eventually to the first sacrifice of that man stabbed in the heart at the Weirwood tree by the Children of the Forest. During this ritual, Bran’s consciousness became unintentionally trapped, and his greenseer powers gave him the ability to raise the dead (warging the dead). The White Walkers were originally created by the Children to wipe out humanity (as they were at war) and as the ritual trapped him inside, Bran gradually lost his humanity over the millennia, ultimately becoming the Night King, or “The God of Death” (the Many-Faced God). The idea that, while in greensight, only minutes passed in Bran's present, but he was forced to experience 8,000 years in real-time for his consciousness, would have been cool to witness on-screen... I would have loved to see a storyline where the "nature of time is a circle" (as hinted with Hodor’s “Hold the Door” moment) played a significant role in the White Walker arc. Concepts like warging and time not being linear would have made for a deeper, more satisfying conclusion. The theory also says that Jon is the Prince Who Was Promised, and that he would be forced to kill his own brother Bran, to save the world—an ending that would have been both tragic and bittersweet.

A simple 1v1 like in Hardhome would not have been interesting or engaging for me. I think the poetic aspects of having the Kingslayer do it would be interesting. Theon getting a backstab kill before Jon is about to be killed would be a fun little throwback to Howland Reed's death as well. I don't think a 1v1 is very interesting and doesn't make a ton of sense anyway. I would honestly take some random NPC soldier over what we got, it just has to be executed properly.

2024-10-03 22:23:31 +0000 UTCI'd agree with this. It's not the worst episode, but it's the one I'm most upset by ig, along with episode 5.
TheSauceGuy
2024-10-03 22:22:51 +0000 UTCThere was supposed to be a 5 year time skip in the books but George didn't want to write in flashbacks and tons of dialogue explaining the past five years. Pretty much every major character that I can think of except for Theon is younger in the books. It's pretty typical for Hollywood to age up characters when adapting things from books like these.

2024-10-03 22:20:27 +0000 UTCI'd imagine Jon will be more cold and calculated when he comes back. Due to him being ambitious in the books, this could cause him to do somewhat messed up things. Also, he will feel conflicted unlike in the show, especially when he learns of his Targaryen blood (even if he's just a Targaryen bastard in the books). What will he do when he learns this?

2024-10-03 21:57:36 +0000 UTCI didn’t read the books but I know all about the Tyrion being part Targaryen theory and that was my absolute favorite theory! I wanted him, Jon and Dany to all ride dragons and kick ass together. If that happens in the books I will have to read them!

2024-10-03 21:57:31 +0000 UTCThe ending for the books will be different. The show has cut too many characters and arcs out for them to have the same ending. Also, magic, barely any in the show. Not even that, they also changed the characters a lot from their books counterparts, ESPECIALLY, Sansa, Jon and Dany. Like Sansa's whole arc was changed. Characters like Young Griff, Arianne Martell and Lady Stoneheart were not even included in the show when they're extremely important in the books.

2024-10-03 21:56:55 +0000 UTCreally could have been good if they: 1. had strategy, all army behind walls, catapults behind always launching, no dothraki charge or unsollied throw away 2. plot armor reductions, more lost characters in the situations they showed being impossible
Brent Kilgore
2024-10-03 21:55:15 +0000 UTCI'm fairly certain Dany will not be the savior in the books. She might try to be, but I think she will fail.
TheSauceGuy
2024-10-03 21:54:47 +0000 UTCIn S8E1, when Jon is at the Weirwood tree where Bran was sitting, and Arya sneaks up on him, he said 'How did you sneak up on me?'. Her growing up in Winterfell combined with the skills she's learned in the past 8 seasons is probably why she was the one to be able to get close to the night king. It could definitely still seem like a bit of an asspull, but I don't think it's as nonsensical as some people make it out to be. And the callback to that scene in season 1 is pretty nice.
Juu
2024-10-03 21:54:29 +0000 UTCI agree that Jon fulfilled it, but I also don't care too much about the prophecy. George likes prophecies to come true in unsuspecting and interesting ways. One example he gave was a man who was told he'd die if he ever went to a specific castle; he avoided the castle his whole life but ended up dying in front of a pub with the same castle on a sign in front of it.
TheSauceGuy
2024-10-03 21:53:41 +0000 UTCAs someone who read the books first I still think this episode is incredible. There's a few moments that could have been done better/made more sense but start to finish this is incredibly enjoyable to watch in my opinion.
Juu
2024-10-03 21:48:18 +0000 UTCNo, that would make sense! Most of the GoT battles are more chaotic and illogical. I found Rook's Rest from HotD to be better than most of the GoT battles in terms of seeming real (apart from the dragons ofc haha).
TheSauceGuy
2024-10-03 21:47:27 +0000 UTCThat's somehow shorter than I thought it would be, but it must have been excruciating.
TheSauceGuy
2024-10-03 21:45:45 +0000 UTCReal, I'm glad they brought him back for HotD.
TheSauceGuy
2024-10-03 21:44:58 +0000 UTCI wouldn't want Theon to beat more than one White Walker and I'd rather he get injured and seemingly die, only to support whatever remaining characters are left fighting the White Walkers by killing the Night King. It's not perfect, but it's a throwback to the Howland Reed and Ned thing, except Theon would die after. I think the main issue is having the Night King in the first place creates this "big bad" that they have to beat. Even if the White Walkers have a leader, I don't think killing him should eliminate all of the dead lol. Bran's powers weren't used and you can tell they just didn't know what to do with him. The magical aspects of the story are what George struggles with most and D&D struggled with it far more.
TheSauceGuy
2024-10-03 21:44:27 +0000 UTCThe entire story is. That's why he's my favorite! Hes really tryna say something humanly poignant.

2024-10-03 21:39:43 +0000 UTCYes, Sir Twenty Goodman! And the very irony in that is George himself LEFT tv script writing TO write novels, explicitly SO he could not have this problem. He finally thought he had the chance to work in television and have charge over those kinds of production problems, but was wayyy too late in a fixed game.
Lady Stoneheart (Uncat)
2024-10-03 21:37:41 +0000 UTCAlso using the manga spelling despite (I'm assuming) not reading the manga. I will say that Arya killing him is incredibly silly, especially the way it's done. It's not interesting or cool to sneak attack the "God of Death" lmao. It doesn't make sense how she was even able to get to him, let alone not get her neck snapped.
TheSauceGuy
2024-10-03 21:37:26 +0000 UTCMacJordanT she has literally been training the ENTIRE show lol. From episode 1 until now. 11 years old to 18. From training with Syrio Forel (master swords man), to practicing everyday when she was with The Hound. Then she was trained by the deadliest and SNEAKIEST assasssin in the show, Jaqen H'ghar. Finally, breif training with Brienne. She SNEAKILY killed the entire Frey family in one night. I also wouldn't consider her a C+ student. She killed Waif who was Jaqen's number one student with far less training and experience, not to mention she had already been stabbed multiple times. Did you even watch the show lol With that being said it should have been Jon Snow that killed the Knight King.

She could do it in the dark because she knew how to move from when she was blind. You do see the hair low in the wind on one of the Whitewalkers right before she jumps. I don’t know if that’s true that is just what other people said.

TheSauceGuy
2024-10-03 21:02:12 +0000 UTCGeorge 100% would've worked with them and both he and HBO wanted to expand the show. The main issue is the rushing and cuts, one of which is already being seen in HotD, albeit far less significant so far. TBH, I think the Hollywood environment and human error make it difficult to produce these sorts of series.
TheSauceGuy
2024-10-03 21:01:44 +0000 UTCThis is the main problem with season 8, it is sooo rushed. The Final battle against the whites in one episode, and you will see what they do with the remaining episodes.. Season 8 could have been easily stretched to 3 seasons, but they wanted to rush the greatest series ever to the finish line for no good reason.
Mahti
2024-10-03 21:01:41 +0000 UTCTbf the music and some of the scenes were better than I remembered. But still the way Arya killed the night king, the main antagonist of the series, was stupid. Jon did nothing much, sadly, this episode. I'd rather have Jon kill the night king. I was dissapointed that this battle was worse than the battle for the wall against wildlings. Anyway we’re very close to witnessing the biggest flop🫢 I’m so excited to see the geks reaction and hear their opinions about it P.S. The night kings death was just as unticlimitic like the death of anothe antogonist of a VERY popular show (the only difference is that he got stabbed in the back lmao). Both of them seemed immortal just to be taken out in the lamest way getting outsmarted by the character that they could easily one shot. iykyk👀

2024-10-03 20:49:42 +0000 UTCmy only major gripe with this entire episode (other than it being INCREDIBLY dark like hello???) is the fact that the entire show everyone was always like “winter is coming” and it’s worrisome! you’re supposed to be concerned about it! and yeah we lost a couple great characters and it was a huge battle but the fact that “winter” was over in the span of like two episodes is fucking crazy 😭😭

TheSauceGuy
2024-10-03 20:48:25 +0000 UTCThe problem with a lot of villains is they are too full of themselves. They think they're invincible, so they make stupid calls because they don't think they can be beaten. It's a common trope across ALL media. The stronger they are, the easier they die sometimes. The walkers didn't think there was any way they lose at that point. They were face to face with the Three Eyed Raven. The little breeze of wind that blows past one of them as the Night King was about to kill Bran is such a cool shot though because Arya just blows past them since they are not on guard at all. And we know how sneaky she is, not making any noise when she walks around and shit. The way that Jorah and Theon went out was like the best way they can.

2024-10-03 20:26:47 +0000 UTCCannon, I think George could finish The Winds of Winter, but I'm not hopeful for A Dream of Spring. Hopefully, TWoW ends in a satisfying place in case ADoS doesn't get released. Brig, if the books get finished, an adaption could be possible, but George probably wouldn't be around for all of it. I'd take an animated series with good animation if a live-action one wasn't possible. If you're talking about moving pieces, we could've at least seen a glimpse of the Umbers getting taken out. The best way to solve things would be to add more pieces to the board and expand the series rather than rushing to end it. Many regions and characters from the books could have contributed to the plot, but instead, these regions did nothing and the characters were removed. Bran's journey did absolutely nothing to help in this battle either, all he did was act as bait. He should've played a large role in defeating the Others and the Night King shouldn't have been created in the first place. I think describing it as "Marvely" is a pretty accurate assessment; it could be much worse, but it doesn't feel like GoT.
TheSauceGuy
2024-10-03 20:20:58 +0000 UTCWhy’d the night king even show up to battle, as long as he’s far away or hidden there’s no way he can be beaten, he could literally outlive all these characters.

2024-10-03 20:01:29 +0000 UTCWhen was this sneaky training? When she was chasing cats in King’s Landing? Cuz I didn’t see it in Braavos. All we saw in Braavos was that Arya was BECOMING proficient enough with a spear to spar with the waif. And she was still sloppy to get snuck up on and stabbed (fatally if the show made sense). Based on what we saw there, she’s a C+ student of the Faceless Men at best. Fast forward to Season 7 and she’s an expert sword and dagger user (once again did not see any sword or dagger training in Braavos) who can match BRIENNE?

2024-10-03 20:01:09 +0000 UTCYou guys are killing me with the lack of understanding just how much from the books was kept out of the show. There are so many more answers or at least theories towards foreshadowing for answers. It's part of why George is having trouble finishing too I think, because if people have already guessed the outcomes of this foreshadowing it's not going to be as thrilling to write these reveals. Him not finishing yet bears nothing on the lack of answers in the show. It was there to be able to flesh out but they literally kicked him off the project. A tv writer, so they could write all on their own, rush, and get done. This is not on George, not even close. If they had the source material they would still have been done adapting after the red wedding, wanting to wrap up too quickly, using only first draft scripts they never ran by George. George is already complaining about HotD leaving out key characters. You can't be baffled the show didn't give answers to things only partially established. They literally could not answer things because they NEVER included all the necessary details by not caring enough about the project.

2024-10-03 19:53:55 +0000 UTCIdk if you want book stuff, but Jack, the horn of winter that Sam found in the show, is heavily theorized and foreshadowed to have something to do with taking down the wall. It's also theorized that Euron is aware of and looking for it.

2024-10-03 19:44:37 +0000 UTCAll of the main characters were fighting at the end and none of them died too many baits. The worst part is none of them fought any white walkers, the White Walkers did nothing! The only time we've seen a white walker fight was Hardhome and Beyond the Wall, both times against John, thats IT! Btw White Walkers are the lietenates of the dead army and the Whites are the cannon fodder.
Alex
2024-10-03 19:43:33 +0000 UTCThese are just my opinions and I'd be curious to see what people agree and disagree on. I might add to this later if I think of other things. Positives: - Visuals - Music (Ramin Djawadi is the GOAT) - Sense of chaos - Overall comradery was nice to see - Literally anything with Theon - Theon's sacrifice - Jorah's sacrifice - The Hound showing fear again with all of the fire - Beric, the ultimate light source in the episode - Unsullied finally get portrayed how they should have been - Melisendre lighting the swords and trench + her death Negatives: - Jon doesn't get close to the Night King. I think a fight with Jon and many other main characters against the White Walkers would be great, but most of them die doing this and as Jon is about to be killed, an injured Theon or Kingslayer saves him and dies from previous injuries. - Arya kills the Night King in the simplest of ways purely to subvert expectations - The part Arya plays in the story doesn't feel like it belongs - Rhaegal gets injured and we don't see what happens after, he just vanishes - Bran does nothing and his power and journey are mostly irrelevant - Dothraki charging in against the undead - Catapults and trebuchets were built outside of the wall - Archers sitting and doing nothing after the trench is lit - It is silent inside Winterfell when Arya is sneaking around despite a war going on outside - Hiding the women, children, and elderly in the crypts - HUGE plot armor for most of the main characters - Not enough participation from other parts of the realm - Ghost should've been somewhere else (the crypts would've been cool, but I stole this from Cannon)

2024-10-03 19:40:59 +0000 UTCI seriously rewound about 5x the first time to see if I missed something. But ... to answer all these questions, people really only have to look at the "inside the episodes" and vids on how they shot the scenes to get the real answers, which lie outside the show.
Lady Stoneheart (Uncat)
2024-10-03 19:39:05 +0000 UTCThe reason the Night King caught Arya is because she was screaming as she jumped out at him haha. This is by far the worst part of the episode as it solves the entire conflict of the North by having Arya be sneaky and jump at him. He killed Theon so fast but just stared at Arya instead of snapping her neck lol. It was done purely to subvert expectations. The Night King doesn't even exist in the books so they're going to have to find another solution to dealing with the Others. I imagine Stannis could still be alive by this point and he and his host will defend Winterfell; he'll burn Shireen in a last-ditch effort to hold them off but ultimately fail. Winterfell falls to winter and Stannis gets a more satisfying ending. I imagine there will be a more combined effort in the books as well, at least if the force is as large as it is in the show. I'd imagine a battlefield victory will not be what defeats the Others though, it'll be something magic. This is under the assumption the books even get finished.

2024-10-03 19:21:13 +0000 UTCYeaaa but them making a clear choice from the very beginning also kind of ruined it tbh. Bc one thing I was not expecting was Jon to be a side character in the books. They gave Jon too much importance from the very beginning when they should've built up how important he's becoming. I'm not sure if that made sense lol 😭 and then again, show watchers will never understand how important Dany is bc most of it is erased from the show. Like the fact that she already knows that there's a bigger threat beside the throne and the fact that she saw rhaegar in the house of the undying in the books, is so crazy they never included it in the show.

2024-10-03 19:18:01 +0000 UTCJon's "entire life's purpose" was never about him killing the Night King. Not once does he ever express that ambition. 2024-10-03 19:00:38 +0000 UTCImagine this: Theon charges the Night King, the generals step in. He takes out general after general, all that winterfell Ned stark training paying off. As he takes out generals, the hoards that surround all our other characters (who lowkey should be dead) start to drop. The music swells THEN theon goes for the night king and dies. With most generals gone, Arya has a clear path for the night king. That would solve a good chunk of issues the end of this episode had. I LOVED the Theon scene but they could have still given him a tad more there without changing too much. Fixing Bran and Jon isnt hard either. Jon just had to actually try more. It wouldnt have taken anything for them to have Jon climb or wrestle or slash at that undead dragon. he doesnt need to win, he just needs to be more active. Bran just sitting there didnt need to be so simple too. Why not have his ravens all swarm the generals and night king at the end, they dont have to do anything just a distraction. Just A MOMENT. It doesnt completely fix the show but it def would fix those issues I believe.

I really liked Jorah, all the Arya scenes, as well as hound/arya/beric scenes and Theon with the most amazing arc making me cry every single time 🥹 some great performances!! But I mean my man Jon was robbed of that kill. Not even a 1v1 bro? 2024-10-03 18:38:16 +0000 UTClast one, and probably most controversial one.. i hate the "if jon is the prince that was promised why didnt he kill the night king".... when has killing the night king ever been part of the prophecy? i thought the only things we have heard were about uniting the realm against the the walkers. jon literally did that. none of these people are here together in winterfell if not for jon... especially not dany and the dragons. he fulfilled the prophecy as far as we know it no? imo jon is clearly the prince that was promised WITHIN THE PARAMETERS OF THE SHOW. im sure there are arguments to be made in the books but here, i just think it is so clearly him. another interesting angle on this is... jon is the one who sets arya on her path at the very beginning.. if he never gives her needle, she never meets syrio and isnt in her dancing lessons when the lannisters move against them, she never meets beric or has her time with the hound or goes to bravos... she doesnt become who she needs to be to ultimately kill the night king. (and before you say it yes i already admitted they didnt do a great job of showing us what exactly she learned along the journey or how the faceless men helped her, but i think if you take the stance that the lessons were not meant to be obvious and jaqen taught her lessons in his stealthy way, and becoming no one was more about stripping and rebuilding ego than actually ever joining them, then it is more interesting.) Jon set it all in motion, he united the realm, he is my prince that was promised (IN THE SHOW).

2024-10-03 18:32:41 +0000 UTCDon’t get me wrong, I was very hype when Arya killed the Night King. Although her arc was spotty with her training, I love her as an assassin so I can see her being the one to do it. Her kill was epic but I still would have loved if it was Jon. The whole show, the dead and the Night King were Jon’s main priority. Idc if it would’ve been too obvious, that should have been Jon’s kill. IMO

2024-10-03 18:32:28 +0000 UTCTheon killing the night king would have disappointed me, him dying after bran gave him the words he always wanted and needed to hear was the perfect send off to his character. Best character in got hands down

2024-10-03 18:31:48 +0000 UTC1st time watching I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. And I loved all the war scenes. Had some complaints on who killed who or who else should have died or shouldn’t have but that’s it all the evidence I need. It was good loved the cinematography and the music scores and just watched it again just now and felt the same way. Even with all your evidence in the world I would never say this episode was below a 7.5. So yea continue on Sir.

2024-10-03 18:31:10 +0000 UTCIt has nothing to do with favouritism, if I wanted my favourite character to kill him it would be Theon but that wouldn’t make sense to his story. Jon killing Cersei would have no catharsis either as that isn’t related to his story. Jon for 8 seasons has been built up as the guy to defeat the white walkers and his multiple stand offs with the night king highlight this eventual fight. Arya only just found out about the night king and has no story ties to him so her getting the kill provides no catharsis for 8 seasons worth of buildup

2024-10-03 18:23:20 +0000 UTCI also dont understand peoples anger about arya being the one to kill the knight king.. . for me it makes sense that it was kind of her whole training arc was meant to lead her to that moment. now, yes, i can admit they should have handled her training arc in a much better way so that it made more sense, but the overall idea that this was her purpose is compelling. especially when you factor in fan theories that make it more compelling. like, one of my personal favorites, that syrio was actually jaqen wearing a face and he never died. he was sent by the lord of light to guide and protect arya. because why else would a faceless man & unreal assassin find himself in the dungeons without being able to escape. there is an interesting dvd exclusive lore video about the many faced god https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YaZA6ik2ESk that essentially explains that the faceless men serve the lord of light who is one and the same as the many faced god. these people's purposes are alll more interconnected than youd think and it seems they are all being led by the same god. I also like that they had melisandre sort of prophecied aryas purpose early on, and the reveal that beric's unknown purpose all this time was to save her. anyway, there are sooo many fun fan theories and lore for you guys to dig into when you finish the show. i just think this general idea for arya over the course of the show as a whole is really cool and would have made perfect sense, they just didnt handle it as well as they could have unfortunately.

Yes the last few episodes are terrible but the scenes still good. Any episode when you get to see the dragons fight is a great episode for me. I gave up on humanity and live to watch the dragons. I'm only sad that the dragons die. I'm only here for Drogon, he can do no wrong. He can kill everyone and still be amazing in my eyes.

2024-10-03 18:20:06 +0000 UTCThe episode had some awesome shots and had some great music and moments, but the battle itself was a complete mess. I know this topic has been beaten to death, but I just need to get it out of my system. We’re talking about the greatest army in Westeros, led by some of the best commanders and strategists, and yet they devised such a flawed plan: 1. They built a single layer of trenches instead of a more robust defense, like having more layers of trenches that should've been already set on fire, putting traps and other defenses in between each layer. They could also have placed elevated platforms for archers and crossbowmen to rain down fire and use the elevation as a warning system. Make choke points and have some forces hiding behind these layers to deal with breaches. 2. They placed the trebuchets in the front lines, making them vulnerable, instead of positioning them behind fortified defenses where they could be better protected while still providing support.. 3. They sent their strongest warriors to the front without adequate support, leaving them exposed to overwhelming numbers and cutting them off from crucial backup. 4. They made Bran the bait but failed to properly utilize him or have anyone waiting to ambush the Night King if he showed up. 5. They didn’t take full advantage of Winterfell's defenses, despite it being one of the most fortified castles in the North. 6. They waited until the undead were at their doorstep before deploying the dragons, missing earlier opportunities to use their aerial superiority to disrupt the enemy's advance and shift the battle in their favor. I'm not a smart person, so I know if I thought of something, then these characters and by extension the writers, should've already thought of this or had something way better/cooler/smarter prepared. There are plenty of other issues, but I’m sure many have already discussed how problematic this battle was. It feels redundant to keep reiterating the same points, especially since as I mentioned this topic has been beaten to death.
Enma
2024-10-03 18:20:01 +0000 UTCI'm still mad that the North people treat Daenerys like she's a bad person, she lost her whole army, her most trusted man and Raegal got really hurt, she was firing and lost in the storm while Jon was just standing there, why would Jon ride a dragon without knowing any commands. What irritates me the most is Sansa's fking attitude when she didn't do anything at all, she didn't risk anything but she keeps having her stuck up attitude.

2024-10-03 18:17:29 +0000 UTCGetting Viserys certainly made things easier for the Night King, but it was not necessary for him to be able to get past the Wall. Without the undead dragon he would just have frozen the surface of the sea at Eastwatch and the army of the dead would just have marched around, just as they walked over the ice when Jon took a band beyond the Wall to bag a wight.

I did like most of the episode even though I couldn't see the majority of the time. Not because of you guys. I mean when I first watched it as well. I have mixed emotions about Arya killing the Night King. I thought it was a cool surprise, but I did think it would be Jon. But, I guess it would have been obvious. I am curious to see what George would do differently, but I don't think he will finish them. That's why I've hesitated to read A Feast for Crows and Dance of the Dragon. I read the first three and enjoyed them. It is a bit odd because a lot of characters are younger than the show. I look forward to seeing the next reactions!

2024-10-03 18:08:26 +0000 UTCWhen I looked it up the quote from Grrm that I found was him saying “the things that are going north of the wall… are the ice of the title”. Whilst that could be extrapolated to mean the white walkers it could also be referring to Jon and his arc north of the wall, Grrm is known for being vague with stuff like this so there’s no knowing for sure what he actually meant yet. Plus the prophecy on the dagger says “From my blood come the prince that was promised and his will be the song of ice and fire”. Which very heavily leans towards a child who is touched by fire (Targaryen blood) and ice (stark blood which is known to be magical like Targaryen blood, just in a different way)

2024-10-03 18:05:11 +0000 UTCIt does such a good job of showing why he had a fall from grace in the first place too, and so beautifully shows the conflict he has between the two worlds and what his choices have been. Like when he tells the Maester “I’ve gone too far to turn back now”

2024-10-03 18:02:05 +0000 UTCNo. Please use your brain for just a few seconds here. Jamie thematically actually has an entire arc dedicated to being a king slayer and a man without honor who is actaully honorable. Him killing the knigh king and dying would be the most honorable thing to ever occur and completes his character arc unlike Arya who has zero ties to this story. 2024-10-03 17:48:27 +0000 UTCHe wasn’t the hero in that moment funny enough, and I like how he couldn’t throw the ring in the fire. It was gollums obsession with the ring that got it destroyed in the end, which makes him the unintentional hero of the story. I get your point about Jon and if the show would’ve done it the right way I’d prefer it, but if it wasn’t going to be Jon I didn’t want it to be Arya

2024-10-03 17:46:36 +0000 UTCa very respectable outro discussion. i like this episode for the most part but i totally understand peoples gripes and can admit things could have been done better. definitely agree that that is the real tragedy of GOT.. an IP like this and this world George built is once in a lifetime material to work with. like you get one shot to adapt this top tier material and they did it soooooo well in the first half... its sooo tough that they didnt capitalize on the potential through to the end.. that is why i feel like GOT will stay the biggest fumble in tv history maybe forever. but that being said.. it is still very beloved despite that.
JAY
2024-10-03 17:46:25 +0000 UTCthe cinematography and soundtrack were 10/10 but the long night was a short night💀 they should’ve pulled an endgame make them loose the first round and then second round they win . plot armour was bs too . idc what anyone says jamie should’ve died during the long night bro had one hand and it’s not even his good hand. a lot more important characters should’ve died, sam, davos , etec to make it more crazy but i’m glad jorah and theon had justice to their character arc this season. the dragon fight should’ve been dany and drogon vs viserion and the night king it would’ve added more emotions cuz that’s her dead son and drogons dead brother and then when the night king hits the ground that where we should’ve had the night king vs jon in a epic battle. but no dumb and dumber thought “ why give the audience what they want and just make arya stark the prince who was promised who killed the night king!!!”

2024-10-03 17:38:23 +0000 UTCTheon or Jaime would've been the best option for killing the Night King IMO (if not just Jon). Theon could have a Jojen Reed moment where Jon is about to lose and he saves him after he'd been stabbed or something. Jaime would be a good option because it'd give the name "Kingslayer" a new meaning. The books don't even have the Night King lol. There is a "Night's King" but this is a historical figure and not the "leader of the Others." The Night King is a generic villain meant to give the characters a single central antagonist character though. Things would've had to have played out much differently without him.
TheSauceGuy
2024-10-03 17:38:16 +0000 UTCTypical of wanting Jon to kill the night king. That’s the problem. Everyone wants their favorite character to do the best thing or have a happy ending. When it doesn’t happen that way it’s automatically “trash writing”.

STORY: 1/10 I think I understand where Jack is coming from, John a character whose purpose since episode 1 was the wall and white walkers staring at a dragon while Aria an assassin whose goal is avenging her family gets his entire life's purpose of killing the night king. Now that's worse writing than CW shows. Not to mention Tyrion, Sansa and Dany staying near the zombies who climb dragon. LOL After you see the next episodes its best to go back and judge this one story wise because its baffling. But as a first watch ig the excitement is great.

2024-10-03 17:25:24 +0000 UTCArya clearly has supernatural abilities after training with the faceless men. How many times does she sneak up on Jon this season? There are so many issues with the scene, but Arya going unnoticed is not one of them.

2024-10-03 17:24:50 +0000 UTCIt would be poetic for Jon to use the dagger which has the prophecy written on it which is about him. It would be nice to see Jon and Arya working together since they’re the closest stark siblings. And as for Dany we could still have her scene where she has Drogon breath fire on the Night King but have it happen whilst he’s on Viserion and so she has to give one of her children their final death so even though she doesn’t kill the Night King she at least takes out his zombie Dragon

2024-10-03 17:22:27 +0000 UTCOne of the worst ways for the Night King to get taken out. 8 seasons of Jon’s character being built up to become the Prince who was Promised all for it to go to waste. So many years of analysis and theory’s through the books and tv show just for whatever this is to happen. I love Arya but she literally had no connection to the Night King or army of the dead. It should have been Jon, Dany, or Melisandre to finish the job. Hell even Bran could have warged Jon to do it or somthn but nope.
Jed
2024-10-03 17:20:10 +0000 UTCMy idea for the final fight would to have Brienne, Jorah, Jaime, The Hound, Theon etc. fight against the White Walkers whilst Jon makes his way towards the Night King to duel him. And during the duel Jon would start losing and be knocked down to the floor about to get finished off before Arya jumps at the Night King behind, he catches her (similar to in this episode) but she drops the dagger to Jon who catches it and stabs the Night King
Delane Gill
2024-10-03 17:20:00 +0000 UTCI dont hate Arya having a hand in killing the Night king but I feel like Jon should’ve had more of a role in it given how he’s the prince that was promised and basically the representative of the song of ice and fire with his parents being a Stark and Targaryen.

2024-10-03 17:11:22 +0000 UTCMy Problems with This Episode: Battle Length: The battle should have spanned multiple episodes. The last Long Night lasted years, so resolving everything in just a couple of hours feels rushed. After 8 seasons of buildup, it was too short and it seemed like they were just trying to wrap things up quickly. Deaths: Was expecting way more and still feel like their should have been more Poor Decision-Making: Some choices felt amateurish, like the crypts and the Dothraki charging into battle. It seemed like the characters weren't fully prepared or thinking strategically. Night King's Motivation: I still don't understand the Night King's beef with Bran. While he has the "knowledge," it seems trivial that it's the only reason he wants to kill Bran. It would have made more sense if they explained that the Three-Eyed Raven knows exactly how the last Long Night was defeated, knows their origins, etc and doesn't want him to help the living defeat him again. Arya and the Night King: Not even going to dive into this. All the themes of prophecy, fate, and destiny felt meaningless after 8 seasons of buildup, just for shock value. So many issues however, can't begin to get into it all. The cinematography was beautiful but just another meaningless plus.

2024-10-03 17:08:58 +0000 UTCAryas entire arc has been about training to get the strength to wipe out people on her list, she only just found out about the night king a few days/weeks ago. The decision for Arya to kill the night king is basically the same as if Princess Leia was the one to kill emperor palpatine. It doesn’t fit the story that has been built up for 8 seasons. I definitely did not misinterpret Aryas storyline, so don’t say that I have, you clearly misinterpreted Jon’s storyline if you didn’t see the obvious foreshadowing of a showdown between him and the night king The fact they showed him walking off after Dany failed to burn him and then show Jon grab his sword, only for nothing to happen is just giving the fans the finger
Sean Carroll
2024-10-03 17:08:39 +0000 UTCMy favorite part about this episode is when Jon turns to Dany and says “The night king is coming” and Dany says back to him “The dead are already here” Like someone actually typed that into a script and was proud of it.

2024-10-03 17:00:57 +0000 UTCSorry, I don't think Missandei snapping back at Sansa was out of left field. Sansa is sitting, hiding in the crypt, talking about 'divided loyalties' (bitch where? You're all on the same side????) and throwing shade at the 'dragon queen', who's out there fighting, who's men are out there dying, and Sansa takes her chance to throw shade at her, to her own hand. Missandei just gave a reminder that Dany is out there risking her life for them.

2024-10-03 16:51:28 +0000 UTCTheon - what an amazingly written, consistent character. One that lost, learned, and gained it all back. But watching this again, makes me appreciate Theon’s arc so much more.

2024-10-03 16:47:38 +0000 UTCi don’t usually negatively rant on here but this ep is probably the biggest disappointment of the show for me for a simple reason, which is, i really think it should have been jon or dany to kill the night king. were my expectations subverted when arya killed the night king? yes. but in the worst way 😔 one thing i really like about this show and this universe is how it deals with prophecy. i love the idea that people may be gifted foresight or prophetic dreams that will come true, but their own personal experiences and agendas color their interpretation of these dreams (ex: melisandre’s vision of the flayed banner falling at winterfell; she believed that meant stannis would win, but we know that doesn’t happen until after the bob). so i would have loved if at least SOME aspect of the prince that was promised story could be be true but in a way nobody would’ve imagined. like if jon had to kill dany to light his sword or if jon had to kill rhaegal for the same reason or something like that. but no, arya will shut many blue eyes, like gtfo my face ☹️ idk, hated it, dany landing her dragon will never not piss me off, jon screaming at viserion will never not pmo, sam? alive? i’m pissed off. also, i can’t fucking see shit, so i’m pissed off theon’s scene is pretty epic though and the dragon fight is juicy

2024-10-03 16:40:50 +0000 UTCJust because a character can do something doesn’t mean they should, especially when there’s so much source material pointing toward a specific fate for Jon. It undermines all that build-up in favor of unpredictability. The show is about prophecy, destiny, and the idea that each character has a written ending. Jon was clearly hinted at being the Prince That Was Promised, especially because it was personal between Jon and The Night King. The whole arc built up over the seasons was about Jon's journey, and Arya’s victory felt more like shock value than a payoff to that narrative If you really think Arya’s training justifies that choice you haven’t been paying attention to the story.

2024-10-03 16:30:01 +0000 UTCUmm gee idk how about the 6 season of foreshadowing and buildup of him being azor ahai. How about him being the main character who’s the epitome of righteousness and goodness. How about the standoff at hardhome with the NK. How about the standoff beyond the wall with the NK. How about the fact that his entire purpose for 8 seasons was trying to warn the realm about how the NK was the true enemy. Arya killing the NK is the equivalent of Merry or Pippin dropping the ring into mt doom. Oh but it makes sense pippin is a hobbit so he’s more resistant to the rings power and he wants to help save the world and hes apart of the fellowship so ofc he’s gonna be the one to destroy the ring. It’s garbage writing through and through.
Mitch
2024-10-03 16:29:10 +0000 UTCWho said he was resurrected in order to kill the Night King? His sole purpose has always been to reconcile former enemies and create alliances by convincing them that the "Snarks & Grumkins" were very real and needed them all to fight on the same side. This has been his driving purpose ever since he first recognised the threat as a Brother of The Watch. Btw you may have missed it, but Jon and the Night King did briefly fight when they were both flying their dragons. Much more epic than more bashing off swords, brief tho' it was,

2024-10-03 16:23:08 +0000 UTCDespite the darkness, I actually loved that episode. I didn’t want Jon to kill the Night King - it would’ve been too obvious. It was so suspenseful, the camera work was amazing, and don’t get me started on the song towards the end - it was perfect. The white walkers were useless because they didn’t have to do anything - they were near the Night King to protect him, but their job was to be alive so that the zombies could be alive as well. They were winning anyways so why would they fight, too? Also, Arya did have a lot of training to be quiet and sneaky, so not surprising that they didn’t see her coming. It was foreshadowed earlier in the episode when she was hiding from those zombies. And the movement with dropping the dagger and catching it was a bet and she took it and did it successfully. Jon screaming was mostly adrenaline, in my opinion. Like how could he kill the dragon anyways? It would’ve been weirder if he did, I think. I also think it was very smart to send the Dothraki first. Why would they wait for the army to reach them when they could’ve killed many of them far from the front line? They couldn’t have known they won’t do much damage, but they had to try. Also not weird that they didn’t continue throwing the fire cannons when people were fighting as they would’ve killed their own, too. Daenerys not flying off immediately when the zombies started crawling on her was the only weird thing for me. But I guess if she was on Drogon she would’ve fallen, too, when he was shaking them off of him. And if she stayed on Drogon they could’ve killed her as well.

2024-10-03 16:22:33 +0000 UTC"Aryas story has nothing to do with this" So you missed all of Arya's training, starting with Syrio Forel and culminating with her training as a Faceless man? That's seem very remiss of you, Sean. She's literally a trained assassin who can move in soundlessly for a kill (as she showed when sneaking up on Jon in their reunion scene at Winterfell). John's purpose was to gather allies and unite former enemies into a single Alliance - that has been his sole purpose and aim since he first recognised the threat as a member of the Night's Watch. In the episode "A Night of the Seven Kingdoms" you were all complaining that it was but fan service. Now you're complaining because you're not getting Jon Snow fan service, smh!

2024-10-03 15:48:04 +0000 UTCIs the onscreen TV picture a true representation of what the Geks are actually seeing? It looks bad. If that really is the case I can understand for the first time the complaints of viewers about the dim lighting.
