I know what you mean! I was only watching the episodes they were before their reactions aired, but it gets so addicting even on a rewatch! I'm on the first half of season 4 now. Someone had posted a YouTube video of the dumpster movie, but it wasn't good quality. I missed it when it first came out and it's not on any of the platforms anymore. 😞 I heard it was supposed to come out on DVD this month so hopefully that's true.

I’m always sooo excited to see your reactions to my fave moments, and these kind of introspective/backstory episodes in Haikyuu are the best! Sorry for the long comment but it is needed to clear a few misconceptions. Firstly, I don't think being a hindsight merchant has anything to do with saying that the third-years are crucial to the team, because we've seen several examples of this in season 1 alone. The reason you guys think they are mid is because they don't stand out like Kagey, Nishinoya and Hinata. But, you can't make a sturdy building stand without a strong foundation to support it. The series has shown us time and time again that without the third-years, Karasuno would have been in shambles right now. Examples: It's because of Daichi that Kageyama and Hinata are even on the team tbf. They weren't paying any attention to what their captain was telling them on their first day, and literally blew the vice principal's toupee off. That may have come across as funny to the audience, but I am sure it wasn't for Daichi, who got pulled into the principal's office for that. Carter praised him for being so patient back then. Also, because of Kageyama's reputation of being a "tyrant king," he didn't get accepted in Shiratorizawa. Daichi, Suga and Tanaka saw Kageyama play in his junior high. They knew everything as they had seen him yelling at his teammates, but we never saw them bringing it up to his face. Instead of judging him, they accepted him. Even Seijoh's coach said that Kageyama changed only because of the people at Karasuno. Daichi said to Kageyama in season 1, episode 24, when Kageyama literally froze up seeing Oikawa's bond with his former teammates, "I'll get the ball to you, and then you do what you think is best." So, he basically allowed him to play freely. He did the same thing with Tsuki. That just shows how goated Daichi is as a captain. And he's the best all-rounded player on the team. The Seijoh coach pointed out his ability to fill the gaps in his team. Without him, they would only have Noya as a defender, and he couldn't cover the entire court lol. Daichi and Noya were the only ones capable enough to put their hands on Oikawa's serves. He brings balance, stability and fortitude to not crumble when under high pressure. Sugawara is the reason the duo's freak quick developed in the first place lol. He was the one who observed what Kageyama was doing wrong in their first practice match, and suggested he change his mindset of his spiker having to match him. Going off that, Kageyama started to match Hinata instead. Kagey learned how to coordinate with every spiker on his team by watching Suga play. Also, Suga literally gave up his regular status for the betterment of the team. He knew Kageyama's ceiling was way higher than his, and he wasn't petty about it. Asahi won them the game against Date Tech (dataybayo). He's the player with the highest offensive power on the team. Suga said about him, "when the going got rough, he would rescue us. He used to handle tough balls in mid-air." Asahi has the power to blast through a three-manned block. None of the other spikers can do that. Brig and Cannon are repeatedly saying in the comments as to why they didn't win before if the third-years are so goated. Sugawara actually answered this for you in season 1 ep 22. He said, "Of course all the third-years were still there, so I was mostly on the bench. I hate to admit it, but Kageyama has probably spent more time on the court than I have." He was talking about the old bum Karasuno here. So, when the current third-years joined the team, they didn't get to play much. They didn't have a coach, neither did any of the other teams who were willing to play with them. On top of that, most of the current second-years quit at one point, so they didn't even have enough players. The fact that they still stuck around says a lot about them. Losing against these powerhouse teams in Tokyo doesn't mean they are bums, rather just mediocre. And it isn't only on the third years. The second Lev managed to block Hinata and Kageyama's quick, the "geniuses" couldn't do much either lol. So, saying that the third-years are holding them back is absurd because it's literally the opposite of what they are actually doing. And this is where I rest my case haha.

I think a great way of thinking about the teams collectively helping each other is as you say about them pushing each other to improve yes. But I think a lot of it too is to have a better game, and for the love of the game, nobody wants to step of the court, so to push the game longer, raise the stakes higher, win through sheer determination and technical prowess against worthy rivals that push you to your limits of techniques and ingenuity, to win by a margine instead of a mile...I think that's what their practice training matches are all about. To give everything and have your oppenants return that fervor, what a high it must be to win such match's under a vast stadium with screaming crowds as your back drop💖!

I think the reason that the geks might think that the third years are holding the team back or are not as good is because they are not as 'flashy' as some of the other people on the team, like Kageyama, Hinata, or Nishinoya. I don't think it's fair to expect every person on the team to be geniuses or athletic monsters because it just wouldn't be realistic in a high school setting. The third years are pretty normal compared to others on the team, but their strength is that they're highly dependable on and off the court, which we have seen in previous matches. I think the fact that they're kind of in the background and don't get a lot of individual screen time or 'hype moments' like the other players might also affect how you think about them, but in no way do I think they are holding the team back. Just like how Karasuno wouldn't be where they are now without the first years, they also wouldn't be here without the third years.

It’s gotta be said those third year takes might just be the biggest L takes in studio gek history (still love y’all so not hate <3 but it’s true) daichi has been CARRYING hard defensively and has been highlited as filling in all of the teams holes on top of being a great captain. Asahi has karasunos highest offensive ability and is their ace , and the only reason we won a set of Seijoh was Sugawara. I just say this not because I love there characters (because I do) but I think it’s just flat out wrong, I saw some geks comment on other comments saying “but the third years we buns before this season” and I think putting the fallen state of karasuno on there shoulders when they arrived into it is really unfair and the fact that they are as good as they are now considering how little opportunity they had once grandpa ukai left is amazing. If you said the third years dont have as high of a sceiling then id 100% be on board but too say they are holding them back couldn't be more wrong they are the foundation that the first years where able to do anything on top of. It’s not that the third years didn’t have some responsibility in those seasons but it was not the “third years that were buns” it was karasuno that was and they made the best with what they had. it’s not about individual players but having a really cohesive team “the team with the better six is stronger you dumbass” -Iwaizumi to Oikawa

Brig, if we look back at the flashback of Oikawa & Iwaizumi. Iwaizumi reminded him, "Six who are strong are stronger". In the Tokyo practice matches with other Tokyo teams, Karasuno had 2 NPC 2nd Years as stand ins for Hinata & Kageyama. Those 2 weren't as strong as the other 4, 5 if we include libero Noya. Their (NPC 2nd Years) plays would have impacted the overall Karasuno's performance there.

Hearing the third-year slander hurt my chest... After reading the comments: In your defense, All the third years have is extra mileage(We can see this with Suga and Kageyama). Give the shiny new first years (and second years) a couple more anime training arcs and the third years can sit down. So why couldn't they make it this far on their own? In defense of the third years, we must consider a couple of things: 1. Six members on a team. Just as we can get some W first years, we can also get some not so Ws. The team would be cooked right now if not for the old heads(only one trust-worthy receiver, no getting through blocks, Kage freezes up? GGs). 2. Hinata had overnight improvement training with Coach Ukai and some elementary schoolers... At the start of this show, we see they don't even have a stand-in coach as Ukai fell sick years ago. No schools to scrimmage with- so nobody to learn from, nobody to guide or critique, no improvements. 3. The starting lineup for old Karasuno could've been buns, but they wouldn't let the newbies play. "Why let you first years play? There's no coach to tell us what to do." They might've been benched in previous years, never having a chance to help build Karusuno into a better team, like they are now. Also if we clown the third years, Tanaka, Nishinoya, and the NPCs get the same treatment, they were also on the team last year. 😂

That was never my intention. This show for me was always about the journey of the characters and how they grow. Personally I've never considered knowing things like that are spoilers mainly because it always piqued my interest and curiosity on how it got there and why it lead to that. I guess I was just hoping it would have done the same for the Geks. I will refrain from saying anything else about the show that hasn't already been shown. Genuine question about the series though, will you guys be watching the first few movies? I think they are mainly recaps of seasons and arcs, but if I recall correctly I think they do show a little more than the arc they are covering, not 100% sure tho.

It’s funny how Brigg and McKay were the ones who were initially excited about anime when introducing Carter and Cannon to AoT, but they look so genuinely disinterested in all the Haikyuu episodes and it makes no sense to me. I think “holding back” was not the best choice of words. Specially since every 3rd year has something to do with at least one of the newest members development, and you guys have said so yourselves during the first season reactions. Noone in this team is as good as receiving as Daichi, Asahi maintains his Ace title and asserts it even when Hinata’s overwhelming talent is creeping behind him the entire time, and Suga is composed and collected brings a complete shift to the game when he’s switched out with Kageyama. The first years have still a lot to learn from the 3rd years. Also the previous Karasuno couldn’t have won with Asahi, Suga and Daichi alone, lets not forget the second year benchers are really not that good and they even quit at some point cus they couldn’t keep up and evolve. Thats why they are mostly benched rn.

He was on the team and practiced with them, he just wasnt in the squad for the matches. I bet its the same way in the US with big schools, many players in the team but squad slots are limited. Because this was when Karasuno was strongest at the time, there were alot more boys coming to this school with the motivation of playing for that team

In big teams, there is a first-string and a second-string. The first-string is the team that plays in official matches, in this case since Karasunos team is so small they only have a first string. The second-string is like another team that maybe gets to play in some practice matches and these players try to get to first-string by improving and impressing the coach. A team/string consists of 12 members, of which 6 are on the court at all times, and the rest of them are on the bench (except for the libero/2 middles, since they rotate, so actually 7 players get to play as regulars). The people on the bench might get subbed in like Suga and Yamaguchi though. Tsukishimas brother was probably on the second-string (so not even on the bench of the first-string which makes it even more heart-breaking), he was part of the volleyball team, but did not play in official matches. That is why he was cheering in the stands and not on the court. If you look at other bigger teams we have seen (Date Tech, Aoba Johsai), they usually have lots of people cheering in the stands, I think the majority of them are not cheerleaders, but players who do not get to play (second-string).

Well the third years were technically 1st and second years, so it isn’t fair to say it was their faults. Since this is highschool, other factors like coaches, and a goated generation coming are important, not just 2-3 players being good. I said this in another comment, don’t worry it’s a bit of hindsight merchants as they will explain. But even national level teams need role players.

If anything, the third years are the ones that are holding the team together at the moment. Without them, the team will be very messy with all their plays and completely ‘lawless’ in a way. I mean besides Nishinoya, Daichi is the only other player on the team that is probably on the same level as Nekoma when it comes to digging the ball ( providing solid receives for Kageyama to work with a lot of times ) and he’s definitely the most consistent all-rounder player on the team. While Suga on the other hand is part of the brain behind some of Kageyama and Hinata duo plays, he’s the one always providing their signals in order for them to be able to pull off their super quicks to trick their opponents. He’s basically guiding all the first years with information that they are lacking in. Especially Hinata and Tsukki since they are the only middle blockers and are still pretty new. As for Asahi, I know it doesn’t seem like it cause the spotlight is on Hinata and Kageyama’s quick a lot of times but he is the ace. Asahi is the one that basically has the most success when it comes to spiking because unlike Hinata, he has the power to slam that ball down and get it past a three block wall. Anyways in due time the Geks will come to realise just how important the third years are to the team. On another note, it’s just like what Izumi kept trying to say to Oikawa back in season 1, the team with the stronger 6 players on court wins. Which is so true in competitive volleyball, you need all 6 players to be working together perfectly and be really good in order to be champions. Just having 1 or 3 players on a team being good, will not cut it

Another huge part of what I said is that they’re going to get recruits that are BETTER. I like how Tsukki wasn't upset because his brother wasn't some super star player, but he's upset that "volleyball made my brother tell this lie" and seeing his brother so hurt by something he loves is what hurts Tsukki. How his brother smiles but cries when nobody is watching, how he kept going back for the whole 3 years. Tsukki's conclusion that nothing really matters in the end is interesting too

I am gonna have to disagree with Cannon on the third years holding the team back. Without third years who had solid bg on serve and receiving, if the team is only going to be second and first years and they match up with teams who has very good offense, karasuno would not even be getting a way around with it because they dont have solid receivers. Like oikawa said before, receive takes time to get good with it and third years have more experience with receiving and more with match exposure, they are there in the background for the first and second years to do what they are good in without having to worry about those aspects. Great reactions! I don't agree about the third years. They've worked hard and sure they may not be there next year after they graduate, but they still have that drive to go to nationals before graduating. And like you guys said it could help them get more members. They did say Tsukki's brothers name once. It is Akiteru. I think he was on the team, just never a starting member. I think at that time Karasuno had so many volleyball members that they couldn't have all of them on the court at once. I believe he was really practicing, but it can be hard because you're there, but you never get a piece of the action. His brother was good, but it seems like other players were just better during his three years there. I feel like this was what made me feel more sympathy for Tsukki. Mostly, I found his snark funny, but this gave him another dimension. He saw his brother who he idealized fall and that made him wonder if it was even worth it. He became disillusioned with it. I also started to really love Kuro and Bokuto more in these two episodes because they helped light a fire under Tsukkis ass. They didn't sugarcoat things and called him out on not putting 100% in. I'm excited for the next episode reactions!

Akiteru was on the team, I just think they had too many team members to fit them all in the reserve bench and he wasn't considered good enough to play in any games so he was up with the cheer squad. I don't really blame him for what he did despite the fact that it really hurt Tsukki and was pretty shitty. He was only a kid too and wanted to continue looking cool and being a role model for his brother who looked up to him. He definitely thought he could get good enough by his 3rd year to maybe play in the games and his lie would become true eventually. But eventually the lie became so big he couldn't tell the truth any more.

The illusionary hero in this ep is Tsuki 's brother and Tsuki himself. They were both idolized by other people. Yamaguchi idolized Tsuki, he even joined the volleyball team as a kid to be friends with him.Seson 1 he was Tsuki "sidekick" and never could do no wrong in Yama eyes. A story about both "hero's" becoming "lame" and just being human. Not everyone catches the parallels between the brothers.

This! Haikyu is not just wholesome and fun to watch. The thing that makes this story special is the character development. And the way Furudate writes them somehow affects a lot of viewers positively to the point in changing the viewer for the better in some aspects of their lives either in attitude or the way they view things/situation in their personal lives. Some even started volleyball and went far in school/uni .

In the little giant's time, the team was so strong and popular, that it had a lot of members. So it basically had starters, substitutes and reserves. There is only a set number of players that can be chosen as substitutes, so anyone else had to stay of the court. So Tsuki's brother was part of the team and he practiced with them, but the team was so strong that he could not even be a substitute.

I think there are two possibilities regarding Tsukishima's older brother： 1. As you guys mentioned, he lost his position as a regular starter because he played the same position as the Little Giant, so a talented underclassman took his spot. This directly corresponds to the earlier scene where Tsukishima asks Asahi, ‘Aren’t you afraid of talented underclassmen constantly closing in from behind? 2. It’s also possible that Tsukishima’s older brother barely got to play during his three years in high school. I think this could be likely too, considering that Karasuno had a lot of strong players during its peak. The fact that his brother was already in his third year but hadn’t earned a uniform makes this possibility quite plausible.

these 2 episodes are so dear to me you don't understand!! As someone who's a perfectionist who was scared of attempting anything in life, i had a moment of realization after graduation when i landed my first job where the feeling of gratification and pride never came and i thought i was weird for that. i thought everything i did up till that point was meaningless. or that i never attempted new things because i was scared of failure or will not be as good at it as i'd like to be. when i say haikyuu changed me as a person, i mean moments like these (and future instances ofc) it shed light to things i was struggling with without realizing. it contextualized the idea of personal victories and achievements as being for the sake of "pride" as yamaguchi words. i love furudate-sensie's stance on talent and hard work and how much it factors into the success rate of things.

These two will literally teach you and practice with you on all the ways you can be as good as them and even on all the ways you can beat them. You guys finally see Tsukkis backstory and Im glad you like it. A lot of characters in Haikyuu are incredibly relatable and Tsukki is definitely one of them. Also as others said, Tsukkis brother WAS on the team, but back then Karasuno was a powerhouse, they had a lot of members, hence their bench was filled too. The rest of the members that arent starters or benched, would be cheering on the stand, and thats where Tsukkis brother was.

this training arc is my therapy and no matter how many times i watch it, the impact of the scenes are still always so fresh. the fact that furudate (haikyuu’s author) wrote this story to dedicate a proper ending and wrap-up to his own volleyball journey made the characters so much more realistic and the storyline to be so bittersweet, fulfilling and beautiful at the same time. The emotions felt as a high school volleyball player from different standpoints and environments were just so well conveyed in this show for almost every character!! This show just hits me in all the right spots and GAH the hold this show has on me is INSANE i’m so glad you guys are enjoying this show so much, it’s always so great to see more people hop into the haikyuu community and appreciate it. I love the reactions but I LOVE the discussions that come before and after the episodes as well, i just love a good haikyuu yap session XD

I think this is a good time to let y'all know that there are certain post-season credit scenes for season 2 and 3 that you guys should watch haha! The only difference is that some of these are only a few minutes long, but they're really good for understanding the characters! Those players from the other 3 schools are not in the same prefecture with Karasuno. So, Karasuno is not their tournament rival. Those 3 schools are in Tokyo prefecture. They might meet at the nationals though but that's if Karasuno becomes Miyagi prefecture champion. But they are genuinely nice guys! Yes! Bokuto showing us why we like him! 😁

Quick note. Tsukishima's brother was technically on the team. But he was in Karasuno when they were a powerhouse school with waaaay more members. So many so that there were too many members to even have on the bench for subbing in during games. That's why the members that weren't actively playing in games would have to be in the stands watching. It's super sad because Tsukki's brother loved volleyball and tried super hard to become good enough to be a starting member on the team but in his whole 3 years at the school he never even got to play in an official game :'). Poor guy just wanted to be cool and looked up to by his little brother.

When it was his brother's time, his brother "lost" to the smaller player, Little Giant who was 1 year younger than him to be a regular in that team. When Tsukki is in Karasuno, he has his own "little giant" Hinata as a rival! So, he just pulled himself out of the "rivalry" to save himself from heart ache like his brother and he had for his brother ... although he does like volleyball from those flashbacks of that cute kid, Tsukki.

To answert the question: Tsukki's brother was good in junior high, we could see it since he's the ace back then and his technique teaching young Tsukki. In senior high school he's a member 'cause he had the uniform, he also practiced hard, but he's not good enough to be a regular or even on the bench. Karasuno was the powerhouse at the Little Giant time, only regulars could be on the court or at the waiting area. Other teammembers who's not playing in the match would be the cheering team.

As Tsukishima says in the episode, his brother thought that as long as he did his best he might one day claim a regular spot. We can see his motivation and passion when he just entered high school. But just the pure adoration and pressure from external sources (market vendors knowing he's in the team and praising it to his brother, and his brother putting him on a pedestal as a result) we see a sad but a realistic shift in priority from pure motivation in getting better to making sure he's not letting his brother and others down. I'm sure he felt like he had to keep the going with this act even if he was nowhere near attaining it. And that became the foundation for Tsukishima's disillusionment with volleyball.

LMFAO Jack is right. Hinata IS Karasuno's Lev. They're both first years with massive amounts of potential and are pretty sucky at volleyball overall for different reasons (Lev because he only started playing in a few months ago when he started high school, and Hinata because he never had a proper team to play with or a coach to teach him the basics). I'd argue that the third years are the ones keeping Karasuno afloat, because there's no way they as a team could have come together this well with half of their team being first years who don't have experience playing together with one another! If in doubt, just remove one of the third years and see how the team performs! I can guarantee that the entire team will fall apart much easier than if they were present HAHA! To clarify, Tsukki's brother (Akiteru) was on the volleyball team at Karasuno. He was up in the bleachers because back then, Karasuno was a powerhouse school, so they had many, many players in one team. And ofc, not everyone gets to be a regular and the remaining players can't all fit on the bench either. He was a good player, but Karasuno attracted lots of other talented people, so compared to them, he probably didn't have what it took to even make it onto the bench. It's sad, but it's a reality for many powerhouse teams. They simply have too many members. But man, I always tear up during Season 2 Episode 8 for it's amazing voice acting and directing. The dread just kept building up during the first part until it exploded, and the situation just sucks. Yamaguchi and Tsukki yelling at each other for the first time on screen has so much emotion and frustration behind it. It's such a well made episode, I love it! "When is Tsukki gonna have his moment?" Oh... Just you wait...
