A good way to understand how the power levels work in OP is to think of it this way (this isn't spoilers so dw) Basically in the world of OP there are two types of human beings. Normal people, and people who are "strong." Luffy, Zoro and Sanji are "strong" they have super human physical capabilities with no obvious explanation why. Usopp and Nami are normal they might be more durable than a regular human at times for plot reasons but they cant do what luffy zoro and sanji can and they'll never be able to.

Just like you guys said the normal people there are literally surprised to see him still alive so clearly there is an awareness that this would kill a normal person. There's a reason those people are all just standing around with their mouths open in shock at literally everything that's happening. In terms of the breath, that entire situation lasted less than 30 seconds if even that long. Anime makes it seem like he's down there losing his breath for a long time, but just remember that Gen ( the old dude ) only came up for air once and that was after all that. I would assume Sanji could hold his breath many times longer than Gen if he wasn't getting the air knocked out of him. I'm only pointing out things that should be clear based off the story so far, but just as you know this show is 1100 episodes and it tends to all make sense in the end. Even the small things you think are just bad writing.

even as a One Piece fan, I remember having the same critiques when I watched Sanji vs Kuroobi because it did kinda come outta nowhere. The oxygen thing is honestly more so an animation problem, idk why they decided to make Sanji open his mouth fully all the time, but in the manga the first hit takes him by surprise and he does open his mouth once to let some air out, but then every other hit he takes underwater has him holding his mouth tight but letting some oxygen out, so there COULD be oxygen left to blow into Kuroobi's gills, unlike in the show where yes, it is weird that he fully lets out the air several times, and then magically has air. Thats just Toei being Toei. The resistance to all that damage however is really the start to showing how One Piece is because yes, Luffy makes sense, and even Zoro makes sense to a degree. But Sanji being that durable does come out of nowhere, but this really is our first true showing of Sanji, so in a way it doesn't necessarily come out of nowhere, its just our first glimpse into how the future of One Piece will be

As for the comments about the fights, I totally get where you guys are coming from, the fights are also my least favorite parts of One Piece, but I love the show anyway. Also the fishman said that the intense pressure would explode his organs but i don't think they were actually deep enough for something like that, most likely he broke some ribs. Also even though it was heavily exaggerated of him releasing air he wasn't releasing all of the air, he even said that the punches made him release most of it but he still had a very bit left. It also seems like they're underwater for so long but they're not under that long seconds are going by. I'd say though being a seafaring chef he can probably hold his breathe for long time and dive to a certain degree underwater. I think of him as one of those free divers they train to withstand pressure and hold their breathe. Humans are always pushing limits. also don't worry you'll NEVER run out of backstories. what i learned on my pandemic one piece journey was that Oda has a birthday and backstory for even one off characters. Oda loves his characters and the world he's built. It took me a very long time to like Usopp as well. He's funny but he can be quite annoying at times early on.

The truth is that it was unrealistic which does take place in lots of anime fights tbh and it's just something you have to get used to. I did see someone mention that there is a reason Sanji is that durable that get's mentioned later in the show but from their standpoint, Cannon's take is completely reasonable.

reading through the comments is a pain ngl i get you feel a certain way towards some characters but you don't gotta defend or justify a character that doesn't get justified until hundreds of episodes later. yall accepted sanji the way he is prior to knowing anything about him, so let the guys express their opinions freely. same goes for usopp, just because he's a straw hat doesn't mean everyone must like him. if they don't like him, they don't like him, simple as that. just chill and enjoy your rewatch without projecting your future biases towards first time watchers

I agree, One Piece is more story oriented. The lore gets crazier with more mysteries! And as the story progressed plot points start to connect in the most satisfying and complex ways & the things you find puzzling at the start or that don’t make sense and seem like nonsense end up coming full circle and end up having a great reveal or explanation. Also Because the world building is so incredible the build up to the conflicts and the power ups in the later fights are amazing. Btw one piece takes time with its power ups. Oda doesn’t rush. This is still very early one piece - but I guarantee you once you reach Peak you can never go back! 😉

The fights aren't One Piece's strongest point, but I still believe that most fights are cool and entertaining due to the unique nature of the series. If you look at the fights on their own, without any context or background, they may not seem amazing. I'm not saying they're terrible or even mid, but there isn't a lot of intricate choreography or distinct styles, like for example in Naruto. This is something that should, hopefully, be fixed with the remake. However, when you consider the story and the context of the arc, one of One Piece's major strengths, it adds significant meaning and purpose to the fights, making them more exciting and satisfying. The Usopp fight in this last episode starts to already showcase these elements, his memories of his friends' commitment and strength help him overcome his cowardice and face a formidable opponent and win. This reflects my feelings and view on the fights in One Piece, especially in the earlier arcs. As the anime progresses, even if you're unfamiliar with the series, the fights are entertaining and visually stunning enough to enjoy. When you factor in the story, character arcs, and other contexts/background, it only enhances the overall experience. With all that said, I want to make it clear that I’m not trying to tell you or anyone how to view this series or change their opinions. These are just my own thoughts and feelings about it, and how this series approaches fights in a slightly different way, similar to Hunter x Hunter, where its not about the fights but rather the characters and their journeys.

I think you’ve already read many comments saying fights in OP are the weakest. So, no surprise of your comments. It’s the story makes it great. (I dropped the show during fight episodes lol. I’m not a fight lover in general even for those hyped fights in animes). But I think later fights are more entertaining with less trash talk and cooler abilities.

In regards to the point you guys made about Sanji and other "normal humans" in One Piece being ridiculously tough at times, it really is just a fairly common and accepted thing in anime. It's pretty normal to see characters that don't even have any real durability "powers" getting punched through concrete walls and stuff and still being just fine. It might be a little jarring when you see stuff like that happening, but ultimately you just gotta accept that humans in One Piece and other anime are just way more durable than real-world people.
