My brother came to visit for a week and kept tossing on OP the live action show while we were kicking it, and I actually really liked it despite some of the lameness. I started watching the anime from where I left off 4 times in the past since it was lame and boring af for 90% of the scenes, and here I am thinking "Hey, this is pretty great." I even watched an episode of Haikyuu after to see what the hype was about while I was in open-mind mode, but it was super gay, kind of like that one journey the sweet, kind-hearted kids at school had together that I couldn't care less about. Who knows though maybe I'll come to enjoy it, if OP has taught me anything. Though it's dirt compared to the only other sport anime that I randomly gave a shot, Kuroko's Basketball. Thanks to ppl who responded earlier, your advice was spot on

I think i said this before, but i truly believe one piece is probably the best anime to Open your mind to weird and out of the box character designs. most of the time, there is a reason for them to be designed as such like jack mentioned, some of the arcs you go through address some real life topics. but, especially since you guys are roughly new in the anime community. You will come across other "whacky" character designs but i feel like one piece will get you guys more comfortable with seeing shit like that as you guys broaden your anime catalogue.

Without filler Naruto has about 425 episodes, and one piece has 1000+ (and growing). At the current rate they are still progressing through Naruto faster. I imagine the Geks would like to finish OP sometime this decade. Alternatively, there is no actual reason why the two shows have to receive an equal number of episodes per week, that has never been a thing in this patreon as far as I can tell. GOT vs Dark for example.

Yep this is the One Piece episode that sold many of us. I'm happy that you guys are loving it I wanted to add on the pacing, op fans knows and accepted that it is rough, but you'll never hear us go on about it because the payoff is just too good with its characters, stories and lore of the world, to the point where the worst arcs with bad pacing becomes some of our favorite. It is still your guy's opinion on the matter but I do hope you guys fall in love with the characters and story that you wouldn't mind seeing them again and again, like me.

I think it's an up and down journey for most people. It was like that for me. I was down during the Usopp arc, up again when Sanji came up, super into it during Nami's, then down again a few episodes later. That continued up until episode 92 where I knew for sure I liked the show enough to stick it out. It's truly at episode 227 and during the arc that starts at episode 229 that I was completely hooked, though.

You're also not alone in finding the majority of battles in One Piece to be the least interesting. I also find that a lot of the action/fight scenes in One Piece to always be the culprit when it comes to slowing down pacing. I find the lore/history, worldbuilding, and character backstories to be super engaging, but then the fights start and more often than not, everything gets stretched out. It also doesn't help that many of the fights are written more as matchups rather than scenarios that progress the plot: It's like right before some important plot point or character revelation is unveiled, we have to watch the characters first fight minions #1, 2, 3, etc. This causes many of the fights to be more of an obstacle to story advancement and it's why most One Piece fights are my least favorite part of this masterful series. So many hold the plot hostage, lol. Luckily, characters and plot are always the most important elements for me in any story and One Piece prioritizes those aspects first and foremost, so I can easily put up with the more lackluster action. Based on your reactions so far, I suspect that similar to me, the future arcs you guys end up loving the most will be the ones that have emotional backstories as well as interesting present events with LESS drawn out fights. I love Arlong Park for this reason: Both the present events as well as Nami's past happen to be intertwined and that connection resulted in this masterful story. I can't wait to see your reactions for Water 7, Sabaody, Marineford, and Dressrosa (One Pace version)...

Thanks for your awesome reactions -love how empathetic you guys are toward the characters' emotional backstories! Arlong Park's one of my favorite arcs! It had everything: Betrayal, grief, slavery, oppression, loyalty, and unconditional love. This is where Oda really showed us he was capable of crafting mature/brutal stories. Bellemare's sacrifice and the fact that the entire village was secretly aware of Nami's suffering/sacrifice was extremely heartwrenching. Overall, this arc is a masterpiece!

Pre-timeskip OP is pretty much just a preface of how Luffy gathered his crew and how they became the Straw Hats + CRAZY foreshadowing for the main plot. No arc can be skipped as there is TON of information that we later get the full explanation for. Fights can seem « unserious » bc Oda wrote O.P so the readers experience the events through Luffy’s eyes (a lot of the powers, consequences of x or y action/fight, meeting certain characters) seems meaningless or irrelevant to first time viewers but only cuz Luffy isn’t aware yet. Keep in mind they haven’t even reached the grandline yet. Fights could definitely be cut shorter to make them more action packed but as a up to date watcher, I appreciate how the squad can goof around and be unserious early on in this series. Things get a lot more serious the further they advance in the Grandline.

luffy does what he wants, thats basically his character 😂 usopp is just a kid, you cant expect him to act like luffy or zoro who are super strong. this is an adventure type of anime instead of the typical battle shounens we are so used to, where every character is a prodigy, strong, smart, charismatic, etc. usopp d god comes off as a rat,but has a good heart. he has some great moments, and you will appreciate how he blends in with the crew as time goes on!
