(She can’t have them with her husband, and her father knows he forced her into that marriage, so he has put her into this situation where her sons, even though illegitimate, are still Targaryens so could become “the prince who was promised.” Also, this plot line points up the ridiculousness of inherited monarchy, as it still exits today in Britain. Even if you believe as the royals do, that God appointed their bloodline to lead, they’ve always just assumed that the male heir was really fathered by the king or king consort, without proof.

Just like you said, it's spies around the castle so Laenor can't not act like its not his child. It's a messy situation all-around moreso fueled by Alicent's dislike for Rhaenyra because she was able to do what she wanted to do while Alicent didn't have a choice but to marry the King.
