10.08 delayed till Tuesday

Attention. I am keeping this short but announcing that the chapter has been delayed to Tuesday. This is NOT a break or burnout. It’s a classic.

10.08 now stands at 41,000 words. I wrote it in two days…and I was editing today, but I’m not satisfied with my energy levels. I’m blasted, and this is me stepping back and saying that, for the good of the chapter, I need more time.

Ironically, if this were next month, I’d have a week to have done this and edit, and I wouldn’t be writing 40k in general. In theory.

Regardless, bear with me. I’m not happy with stream-reader or beta-reader responses, and I am going to keep tailoring the chapter until it’s good enough to post. Expect at least 40k on Tuesday. More, subject to rewrites. Wish me luck and thanks for understanding.

This has been a productive month. Probably because it’s the last one I’m going to write at this intense a pace. After 10.08 is one last chapter on Saturday before my break. I already foresee some…Crelers clogging up the works, but I’m gonna just do my best.

10.08 will be out on Tuesday, the 19th of March.

Queen, take all the time !!

Ben Jones

It wasn't done

Aliased

Oh darn I forgot about time differences 🙈

limabean

I love how you said that but didn't include a time zone.

Randomdigits

Thank you I will try to stay sane until then.

limabean

Usually anywhere between 730 and 1130

Maybe Someone

No rush but is there a time when the chapter usually is posted yall? 👀 I don't think I can sleep tonight

Halimah Ahmadzai

We demand a sacrifice!

Chargcake

hey umm, i’m starting to look like Dave Chappell in the crack head skit….. umm… got any more of them “chappys”?? i’m fiending over here and need my fix!

Mike

If you don't feel that you're getting your money's worth, then unsubscribe. Complaining repeatedly that you feel cheated over a voluntary contribution rather than simply unsubscribing is you acting like a martyr. End of thread.

Sean M.

Who is trying to be a martyr? I'm saying that if you promise to produce a given service for a given price you should do it. That should be the expectation. Are you suggesting that accepting money for a product doesn't indicate a responsibility to provide that product?

Randomdigits

Then drop your subscription and go read the free chapters dude. If you feel cheated by getting a novel length chapter several times a month, nothing anybody here says or does is going to convince you otherwise. This is Patreon, the premise is being a patron of arts, if you don't want to continue doing it then nobody is forcing you. Pirate releases the chapters for free 3 days after posting them here, you're not a martyr for crying about a delay.

Sean M.

Trueeee pirateaba needs a think tank team to inspire them (if there isn't one already)

afgasd adgasd

No, read the tiers. I posted the benefits of the $5 tier. I agree that they are not beholden to a publisher's schedule but they should follow the terms they set. The author should be providing what they state they will provide. It isn't relevant at all to me what other authors do. If I tell you I'm am going to do a job for you at a certain price you expect it to be done right? I can't just say, well look what the guy down the road does.

Randomdigits

I disagree. If Erin was there, you are right. She would never sell the potions if there was a shortage. Lyonette is a completely different story. Erin is the one who normally has to convince Lyonette to take the moral high ground. Lyonette did several things that weren’t morally sound in Volume 8 to protect Mrsha, and it wouldn’t surprise me if it happened again

Patrick Borosky

What you're being promised is two chapters ahead. It is most professional to set a reliable schedule if you're writing in serial, but the author isn't beholden to a publisher's schedule or supported by a publishing house staff, and needs to handle all aspects of publication themselves, so this is not rare with authors on Patreon or in the indie field at all. Beware of Chicken and Dragoneye Moon take month long breaks with 3K word chapters. You aren't getting ripped off, but Pirateabba is nice enough to not make you wait ten chapters, or twenty, so you won't miss much if you do stop paying.

Scott Soper

Problem with that idea is that no one at The Wandering Inn would sell lifesaving medication they got for free in the middle of a global shortage. They still might switch it up in the future for the sake of healing folks but the Inn needs gold to survive and establish allied groups in the short term, so gold is not a bad idea.

Scott Soper

I view it as Creator says they will do A, I pay for A. I expect A to be provided. Why have tiers with set rewards?

Randomdigits

Yeah. And that's why there's also a free option if you no longer feel like you're getting your money's worth from the Patreon. I've always considered my Patreon subscriptions as support for the writer, not "paying for content", but everyone looks at it in their own way I'm sure.

Splutty

Yeah I can understand that. I’m also wondering when Lyonette will realize she could be making way more money with Erin’s new box skill when she realizes she can copy healing potions or at least Eir gel

Patrick Borosky

You should provide for your patrons what you promise. We should be getting 8-9 chapters a month. That is what we got when I started supporting. It's a pretty simple concept.

Randomdigits

Honestly that all makes sense. I wish there was perhaps a concerned conversation with lyonette about the chronomancer between then and now

afgasd adgasd

no problem take all the time you need. and if you need to delay it further it's ok!

Valmorian

I don't think we'll hear anything about the time-traveling chronomancer and his warnings for a while. It seemed like the guy getting killed is far off in the future, and Erin was mainly focusing on the Winter Solstice. The Blighted King needs to wipe out the demons before the chronomancer gets 'betrayed', and it seems like that isn't happening anytime soon. However, Erin has a really good chance of meeting Tom soon now that she is in Baleros - maybe she'll pass on the warning to Tom, but I doubt it. She's getting as bad as Ryoka on keeping secrets. Not that I would trust Tom with a secret of that magnitude. The teaser on level skills is a pirateaba special :) Remember after Erin got level 40, it took her like 8 chapters to even touch on the [Garden of Sanctuary]. Personally, I just need Erin to regain some of her light-heartedness, which has been missing since the beach chapters. I need some of the happiness back!

Patrick Borosky

Happy I saved the last chapter and haven't read it yet, that said I am super happy you decided not to publish something you are not happy with. Don't ever publish something due to a timeline, quality over quantity every time.

CromCruach

Take your time. I’ve got eight or ten other books in progress. Tonight I’ll go see Dune with Shirley. . . You’ll be ready when you ready.

Stanley Johnson

Now I love that you have decided to go for only one chapter per week and I hope that does you some permanent good. But there is only one thing I think might be a bad idea. And that is to artificially limit how much a chapter should be. We all know how you write, you do not decide that the next chapter is 40k+ it does just happen, because your gut told you, you need more space to develop a situation or character. Now perhaps that makes you grow as a writer and makes you far better at archiving more with less. An ability that you do probably lack somewhat, at least compared to the current genre giants. So I would advise, if you chose to take it, to simply try to make what you write more efficient and keep the chapter smaller if you can but if your gut tells you otherwise, just do that.

Tobias Wahl

Cool, chapters are now 500 words apiece and exactly on time every week :) is that better? Arent you glad now? Seriously though, pirate puts out a firehose of content, and the patreon chapter becomes free after literally 3 days

Sean M.

People feel cheated when the literal terms on the patreon aren't followed. " Twice a week, I release a new password-protected chapter and make the previous one public to everyone."

Randomdigits

The 19 th is my birthday, so thanks for the gift. 😆

Devon

Thanks for telling us, and I'm always happy when you you tell us something like that. Always gives me hope you get somewhat of a break too. :)

Konrad2

She’s probably waiting for the king to make his move and checkmate his ass with the chronomancer.

Oxysmarton

Your rate of writing has often made me think you are pulling a bourbaki. But it is very consistent for a bourbaki. We will be here ready to ready whenever you publish.

Gaurav Patil

👍

John Koor

Chapters don't need to be giant, splitting up whatever you do write into Tuesday and Saturday would be preferred bc it's nice Word count has become a huge focus but what I want is meaningful story development and unanswered questions to find some resolution(regardless of word count, and if given a choice, to the detriment of word count if it's one or the other). Erin has done nothing about the warnings from the literal time travelling chronomancer (at least that we know of) and it's become a really big gripe for me! Im not sure if I've forgotten any reason why its been left unaddressed I'll be honest the story isnt focusing on the most important things to me personally as the reader. I REALLY WANT CONTENT ABOUT ERINS LEVEL 50 SKILL THAT WAS TEASED FOR LIKE A YEAR. And I want time to pass and to see the effects of it and harvest that sweet sweet delayed gratification. The surface has been scratched and I know it's literally because you're trying to figure out for yourself how op and balance breaking it essentially is going to be. the last thing I wanted was an interlude putting that farther off, but mostly i really don't like that saliss entire identity this chapter and lately has been oppressed traumatized transgender exile (they literally go around naked all over the place anyways as a statement and everyone is generally desensitized, I'm kinda over it not gonna lie, you've totally lost my plausible belief in saliss as a character and how the world treats them the moment I think about it). The chapter was enjoyable tho despite that There's massive word counts but what I REALLY want is not being covered (you've got me hyper fixated, or maybe I just did that to myself) I want Erin to do something about the chronomancers warning that we know of as the reader

afgasd adgasd

People get used to a certain rate, and then feel cheated when they get less, even if that "less" is still a magnitude more than what you'd get from somewhere else.

Splutty

Number of words mean nothing if all of them are used to describe the same thing over and over and almost none are used to move story forward

Steve

Take all the time you need! A good chapter later is better than a not-so-good chapter now.

Avi Rubinoff

I call BS the delays have been happening more and more

Steve

Omg 41k words, can't wait till Tuesday!!!!!! also I think I just converted a friend to the cult of the wandering inn

ScubaSteve

do what works for you :)

thomas j walters

Weird seeing people gripe about chapter rate when the amount of content in each one is so much lol. Do whatever you need to to keep quality at a good standard without burning yourself out, keep up the great work!

Sean M.

Why should an author not just post a chapter they are unsatisfied with? Is that the question? If you’ve read this exceedingly substantial and quality novel up to this point, updated to the scale of one Return of the King per month, you already have your answer.

Adam Israel

No worries! Glad you care enough about the quality to make that tough decision. I like to think of this as a preview for how the posting schedule will be starting next month, so I don't see an issue.

Ryan Monahan

Really appreciate all the hard work Pirate. Getting 60k+ words of content per week for as long as we have is insane. I don't think people get how absurd it is to wrire at your pace. Look after yourself and do whatever you think is best for the story and your sanity!

Martinus Chrisjan

We have so many size queens in this fandom. Bigger isn't better. I'd much rather have regular, smaller updates than bloated, infrequent updates.

Randomdigits

I understand writing 40000 words in a week is something few authors could be expected to do on a regular basis at some point you have to slow down so the quality of your work doesn't suffer.

TNM

They used to be. Now that they make more money off the audio books than they do the Patreon it seems like the Patreon supports don't matter as much.

Randomdigits

Take your time

Gerelt Tsolmon

Where else you get 100k+ words chapters per month?

Gerelt Tsolmon

You picked a bad time over all pirate has been good about out put. With the one chapter a week switch I expect a fair number of people to drop back to free.

Arg

So only 4 chapters this month? How is it deferent from what you will be doing next month? Too many breaks and not enough chapters. Why not post it tomorrow?

Steve

She was prepping us for a delay so I’m not surprised at least.

devin brown

I AM WAITING PATIENTLY!!!Dumbledore said calmly.

Oxysmarton

I joined a couple a months ago because I really love this story. But since joining it’s been more breaks and late notice cancels than actual chapters. Maybe I have bad timing but at this point I’ll go back to consuming this as a free product, which is an amazing product, but I’m literally not getting what I’m paying for

Dominick Bruce

the geese will be well fed next tuesday, it seems! i'm glad u made the call to delay the chapter for the sake of quality. all the best in refining this chapter, and thanks for the hard work as always. looking forward to next month to see how u respond to the new updating arrangement

orange

This sure has been happening a lot.

Randomdigits

Darn i won’t lie I was definitely looking forward to this because I suspect/hope this will be the chapter Erin and the Titan meet in person, but I totally understand that you have to make it right before you release it. Get some rest!

Jordan

You do you, Pirate. I can wait, I just resubbed D+ so I’ve got a weekend of binging X-men.

Eldritch Murder God of Crochet

the suspense is worth the wait! thanks for everything you do for us and please please please take care of yourself so the show can keep going!!!

Mike

The ides of March strike again! Excited for the new chappie, thanks for the update!

Samuel Schooley

Okeydoke, thanks much for all your hard work! Really admire your commitment to putting out a good product

Patrick Sheehy

We are happy to wait as long as Nerrys possession of Erin is revealed. The lambs puppetry will be revealed!
