Side Story Poll - March 2023!

I’m not late. I’m just…okay, I forgot the poll, and I was working on Volume 1. So here’s a flash-poll for probably Tuesday’s chapter? I dunno, we’ll see.

I’m tossing in some weird options here because…I want to offer them. Ask for the $10+ spoilers for context or just guess.

Give us Airships!!!

Chris Phillips

I think AI researching call it "hallucinating." Basically, it can't find any information directly relating to the question in its stores, so it makes inferences using the language model.

J Holmes

TTRPG is cool and sounds fun, but...I want more story 😂

Jake Brown

What can I/we do to get the TTRPG on top somehow! It needs to happen!

Tejas Shirodkar

I hadn't seen your previous post (have now) but I read the chapter so knew it was wrong. I've checked out chatgpt and novelai for writing and...NG no good. I think you're right that they just kick out the same tropes. A reasonably competent 15 year old would do far better.

Fitty Sebum

In case anybody sees this post without my prior one - chatGPT is mostly making the summary up, rather than providing an actual summary.

randy

Yeah - its big thing - its best skill would be to do what you asked it to do (gather and compile information) but it still gets things wrong A LOT. I wonder why it couldn't summarize the chapter for you? It can obviously do that kind of stuff....Something to keep an eye on tho...

Fitty Sebum

I mean, cool? But still not good, right? It's gonna be a few years before this starts to give us a run for our money. IMHO

Fitty Sebum

I would love an exploring a nation chapter if it's drath. I read a lot of Chinese novels (wuxia+ xianxia) and would like more cultivators in the story.

Steven Rivera

CHAPTGPT, would you summarize chapter 9.34 for me please? Sure, I can give you a brief summary of "The Wandering Inn" web serial, chapter 9.34. In this chapter, Erin, the main character, is trying to deal with the aftermath of the battle that took place in the previous chapter. She is injured and in pain, but she's also worried about the people who were hurt or killed during the fighting. She goes to the local doctor, Octavia, for help, but Octavia is unable to do much for her injuries. Erin then decides to rest and recover in her inn, but she's soon interrupted by an unexpected guest. The guest turns out to be Magnolia Reinhart, a powerful and influential noblewoman who has been mentioned before in the story. Magnolia is accompanied by her butler, Maviola, and she is seeking Erin's help with a problem she is facing. Magnolia explains that her lands are being threatened by an army of monsters and undead creatures, and she needs Erin's unique skills and abilities to help her deal with the situation. Erin is initially reluctant to get involved, but she eventually agrees to help, seeing an opportunity to expand her own skills and knowledge. The rest of the chapter follows Erin and Magnolia as they plan their next move and prepare to face the enemy army. Erin also spends some time reflecting on her own abilities and the role she wants to play in the world of the story. The chapter ends with Erin and Magnolia setting off to face the army and the promise of a dangerous and uncertain adventure ahead. I hope this summary helps! Let me know if you have any further questions.

randy

I'm told AI writing just uses standard tropes. I asked chatGPT to summarize the last Erin chapter, and it made up a story instead saying that Magnolia came to see Erin about a monster problem, and then they left together to fight the monsters.

Soooo - have we all messed around with ChatGPT? It's not capable of writing anything we want to read for very long at all. Maybe a paragraph or two of creative writing. It's better at gathering and compiling information, but it still gives wrong information quite often. I think it's more interesting to think about using it to supplement your writing, because it does come up with some funny stuff that you can use for inspiration if you need it. Mostly? It just sucks though. It's easier and faster to not bother. I have ZERO doubt that Pirate would show that thing its butt in a two second wrestling competition.

Fitty Sebum

Please no GPT (ever)

Aaron Ballman

It doesn't matter because it won't be Pirate. Pirates specific broken quirks are what makes the writing click with you. An algorithm can copy and then mech the writings of hundreds of thousands of writers to accomplish something that ma5by looks close to it but it will never be the same. Also even Prietae has not written remotely enough text to train an algorithm on it.

Tobias Wahl

Very interesting options. It was a difficult choice.

Nolan Bowling

Depends on the AI. Check out GothamChess. ChatApt (a chatAI) failed to understand the basics of chess…

David Spinnato

If you use ChatGPT as is I think the story you get might be too generic. The AI option might be more interesting if you got a specialist to train a model (like GPT-3) on all of your previous TWI writing, specifically. There are quite a lot of words in your corpus to train with so you might get something surprisingly coherent or at least hilarious. But...my vote is for the uplifting invention I've apparently been waiting for :).

Moosh7

The AI option has a really amazing John Henry vibe to it.

Ian Ballard

AI option is a red herring. Everyone knows Pirate is already a sapient experimental AI from the future.

Riash

AI wouldn't be that effective. Half of the stuff you input needs to be very precise and the other half is the level of quality the AI is... which ends up being more of a hassle than a boon since some AI are limited by budget and others by word count.

Kyle merwin

It would probably be pretty expensive to get ai to output as much as Pirateaba does. But I’d give the pass.

Jaso Zachman

NO AI please. First, because the AI is not AI but a poor imitation of imitator. Second, I prefer the real TWI, not the fake one.

STANISLAV M BOEV

The AI one has me wondering about the future. I would not begrudge pirate using AI tools.. maybe. Man. Such a hard question to answer. A big part of me wants pirate to get more free time, but it also kind of cheapens all the effort they've put in so far. There's something about TWI's word count being the efforts of a single author vs an AI assisted author. But I don't know if that prestige is worth the effort if the output is indistinguishable or potentially better (maybe ten years from now)? Would be interesting to see the comparison though. Would pirate get a pass if they built their own AI programmed on their own work? I feel like that might get you a pass.

Christopher Judd

I really want to know what an AI trained on TWI only would spit out with random story prompts, there could be fan prompt submissions and we vote on which to use

Baines

Thinking on it, the only superhero web novel I've read is Worm. I think it was brutal enough to scratch that itch for the rest of my life.

LeoClashes

It would be tremendously tragic to read an AI version of TWI, like replacing a work by Socrates with one made by someone high on Weed.

Bob

TTRPG Setting? Exciting!!! Vote for that

Seerinx

pirateaba competes with an AI to write? This could be really scarey, what if the AI is better?

Steve

Superheroes are kinda super over done. I'd need to hear more about the premise to see if I'd care

Cobbly

I want to know what a non-TWI pirateaba would read like. Vote for the superhero story.

Thomas

AI reads 10 million words. Lets make the rovot overlords work for this. Its asking pirate to write a pure twi experience distilled against a pure distillation of twi. Come on folks! What if chat gp ends up writing matibg rituals 4?

Gabe Canada

I wanna see what chatGPT will give us but Man I want an invention story

Nik

Superhero story...take that you worm
