I think most of the hate for her comes from her early character flaws. She was SO flawed for SO long people hate her and many don't remember the sheer amount of growth shes seen. While everyone else adapt and grow throughout the story in a satisfying way Ryoka had to be dragged screaming tooth and nail into becoming a better person. For me that's far more satisfying. She didn't just have an epiphany and poof shes better. It's been an inch here, an inch there, and a conscious effort on her part the entire time. It makes her triumphs all the more gratifying when each one shifts her perspective just a touch.

2021-01-13 04:33:41 +0000 UTCBecause the story is built almost completely on the strength of it's characters (none are perfect, that's what makes them interesting) and their development along with what they build and how it supports them in the end and it's not hate to point out that Ryoka falls short in this given the fact she is essentially a co-protagonist, even to the point where in a poll for a side story last year she placed behind even Tom in the selection. If I hated Ryoka and thought she was worthless I wouldn't have stuck with or supported the story as ardently as I do but it is important to point out that in a story where you never now what's going to happen next the one glaring exception are Ryoka's arcs.

2021-01-12 19:06:54 +0000 UTCIt's a bit more than that, comparatively she's unlikable but also just not that interesting as a character, granted this is an oversimplification and she has improved, but all of her arcs seem to be her running around, moping and always having to get bailed out by someone else whether that was Ivolethe, Teriarch, or Erin who all seem to inexplicably idolize despite her doing very little to earn it.

2021-01-12 15:00:49 +0000 UTCWell Ryoka isn't a very likable person, she's someone that can really ruin someones day just by being around, only in later books did she "lighten up a bit" but the chapters that was fun to read was the ones with Ivolethe around being awesome in every way!
