Originally, I always read that scene in the manga as them being a bit mocking and tongue-in-cheek about being Yuji's parent. But they played it so sincere and maternal instead, as if there's a part of Kenjaku that truly does care about Yuji and is happy that he has friends. Which makes it all the worse when you consider what he planned, and how Yuji was part of it since the beginning.
