You know it isn’t always the case that there’s a surplus of O-, as especially at hospitals in certain areas that receive most of the severe traumas.
From my experience at the hospitals I’ve been too they definitely preferred to type and supply your specific blood type. Especially so they can use the O- for when they don’t have time to cross and type before providing blood products.
Not to mention there are actually a lot more potential blood types beyond the typical A,B,O models most of us are taught about.
There’s tons of rare ones like RH null for instance that would make sense why they’re talking about it and will often be trying to find a familial blood type match to use in case it’s needed.
Especially when it comes to sourcing those rare blood types, it can be incredibly difficult. Iirc there was a man in Australia nicknamed the man with the golden blood, as he was the only one capable of supply certain blood products, pretty sure it was especially important specifically for certain mothers and infants.
So blood typing of patients and family can often times be crucial.
I mean at University hospital in Aurora, CO they definitely didn’t have a surplus of O-and told me as much.
That’s partly why they even had me donate my own O- blood in advance of all my brain and spinal surgeries in case it was needed, which in one case it actually was.
So they really do try and use the other blood types when applicable, as it’s not unheard of in mass casualty events to straight up run out of all the O- and O+. Which we’ve definitely had quite a few both where I live in Colorado Springs and the greater Denver metropolitan area.
Though that’s why there are different classifications of hospitals, as many are not fit to take on many significant traumas, as resources are finite.
Some can barely even be classified as hospitals, I know the one in Trinidad doesn’t even have a maternity ward or any real resources to speak of.
Which is kind of ironic, as that hospital used to be somewhat famous/infamous for quite sometime. It’s just it lost all its funding when that was no longer the case.
So now people have to either drive to Pueblo or somewhere in New Mexico if there’s a serious emergency. That’s why my grandparents were forced to move from there.
As it simply wasn’t safe for my grandpa to be that far from adequate emergent care.

I don't really like how Deb started to make the death of Dexter's biological father all about her and how she feels.

Doakes is kind of a hypocrite about angel in a way. Like can you truly judge a man for cheating on his wife once and then telling her the next day from guilt while you were regularly fucking someone else's wife while the husband was undercover

On the blood thing: Firstly if you are really bad off, getting the right blood is better than 0-Negative.
Secondly, it is not as simple as that, as there is a lot more to bloodtypes than just the AB0 and the Rhesus -+ bit.
Thirdly, it was the 80s, so they knew less about stuff and had a worse supply.

Also, Alexa (Amazon) just told me that one of the reasons you might choose to give AB negative blood to a person who needs it over o negative blood might be to preserve that blood type because AB negative is so rare. It also might be a bit safer even if o negative blood is the universal blood type to be donated.

Mark Pellegrino is such a good actor to play manipulative assholes. He was great as freaking Satan in Supernatural. Also played a one-time side character in the tv-show Grimm, I believe. All excellent performances.

To explain the blood thing: First it was the 80s, Antigens were not so well understood back then, so protocol probably was that the safest way is to donate the same blood type. And the dad's blood was probably not used directly for dexter. What probably happened is that they used their own supply and his dad came over to replenish it, because that's what happened when I was hospitalised: they gave me their own supply and then friends of my family('cause they were incompatible) donated blood from my same bloodtype to replenish the hospital's stock.

i remember when i watched this years ago, i had a similar thought about the blood, because his blood dosent need specifically a matching doner, but i belive this was a writing error, because there is a blood type that is very rare, and has the issue of only being able to receive matching blood type, Rh Null. rh null from what ive read is absolutely universal, with pretty much zero drawback, because it has almost zero of the stuff that makes blood types incompatible, the antigens or whatever, im an engineer not a blood man, but because the blood in your body is so clean everything else is just incompatible with you. i also hate this explanation cus Rh null blood is so god damn special the people with it are like, protected by the government so people dont try steal they juices.

There are 8 bloodtypes that usually get talked about: O+, O-, A+, A-, B+, B-, AB+, AB-
These types are determined by the presence or absence of certain proteins on the surface of bloodcells, and generally they're a pretty good categorization of blood. There are a tonne of these proteins though and in rare cases people can have or not have other antigens that may potentially pose a problem for giving or receiving blood.
The currently accepted number of blood types is actually 48 because of all these other antigens, some of them only encompass a very small percentage of the population.
Honestly though, they probably just wanted a reason for Dexter to need this guy's blood though.

Blood was my best subject in higher human biology. This plot point is even worse than you think.
There are proteins called antigens on blood cells that can be A, B or Rh. Your blood can have A, B, A and B, or neither, which is O. Then there is the rhesus factor, denoted by the +. B+ means B and Rh antigens, A- would mean A antigens with no Rh, etc.
It says here that Dexter is AB-, That means means his blood has A and B antigens but not Rh. So, that means Dexter could take any blood that is Rh-negative, e.g A-, B-, AB- or O-.
Just as O- is the universal donor, AB+ is the universal recipient that can accept any blood type. The reason blood types need to match is that the immune system attaches blood to foreign antigens. Bro is literally one step away from having the factually best blood type. Best as in you can receive any type of blood. Blood doesn't care about DNA, so tracking down the bio dad made no sense, as surely the hospital had some Rh- blood.
