2025-12-11 02:09:38 +0000 UTCI think you might have picked up on something a lot of reactors missed, though maybe not- Lakan’s uncle that he was close to growing up that helped him figure out to see people as game pieces is Luomen, Maomao’s adoptive father. I didn’t quite fully understand why she would dislike him so much given that she knows how he was tricked by her mother essentially, and everything that happened wasn’t entirely his fault- she’s learned the whole story growing up around the brothel and has been told all of these details about Lakan by her adoptive father- but I think it was partly her trauma- remembering her mother with the knife when she severed the tip of her finger as a baby- and being probably 2 years old when Lakan returned, and I think must have approached her asking her to call him Papa right after the granny beat him up, which would be a horrifying sight for a child (and we knew the mom was still alive, seeing Maomao visit her in the annex, but Lakan was led to believe she was dead). She might have been influenced by the granny as well, who seemed to put the blame on the downfall of the Verdigris House at his feet- and there is a fan theory that I think the author confirmed- that Maomao’s mother was kept on and taken care of in the annex at the brothel (rather than thrown out on the street like even Maomao mentioned would normally happen when a courtesan could no longer work) because the granny is Maomao’s actual blood grandmother (and would explain her extra vitriol thrown at Lakan and blaming him rather than her own daughter for what happened). Plus apparently Maomao’s adoptive father was constantly praising Lakan and his intellect/abilities, so there is also jealousy on her part towards him
