That is an incredible detail to include, holding your sleeve back to keep ink out of it

Dexter Goad

Also- as to why they write the way they do (Maomao and Jinshi, and possibly some others have been shown doing it), they’re holding their long sleeves back from getting into the ink of what they’re writing- and since this fictional nation is based on China, I believe they write top to bottom and right to left- which is why the text plates we’ve seen are long rather than wide

I think it’s been roughly a year since the start of the series- maybe slightly longer counting the three month time skip in episode one between her kidnapping and when the story actually “starts.” One way I try to gauge it is by trying to track the age of Gyokuyou’s daughter Lingli who was probably just a few months old when Maomao first came to the rear palace, and I think was mentioned to be six months old when Xiaolan was first telling her about the babies being sick- and the baby seems to be entering the toddler stage now- so however old she is equates roughly to how much time has passed- but ages even of babies/toddlers can be hard to tell exactly unless you’re specifically told lol

If you didn’t realize (many reactors don’t), the ladies that kept watching Maomao and Xiaolan while they were trying to grow the roses were concubine Lihua’s ladies in waiting since the “greenhouse” was set up at her pavilion (taking advantage of the sauna that got set up while Maomao was taking care of her)- since Lihua and her ladies are the biggest “trendsetters” amongst the concubines, the manicures served a dual purpose of distracting those ladies and, as you guessed, being a nuisance to Lakan at the garden party lol
