His values were too warped by his own miserable life to actually become Joy Boy but he had the presence of mind to comprehend that by pursuing his warped ideals, inevitably, he would be the only remaining hurdle for the true Joy Boy to overcome. In effect, creating the conditions for a speed run of liberation. That’s why Kaido laments Luffy’s defeat w/ “You couldn’t become Joy Boy either.” he’s literally screening candidates and consolidating prospective opposition by ‘collecting’ strong crew members. He busts out King just like Fisher Tiger too. It also explains why he is an alcoholic and why he’s so brutal to Yamato while still accommodating for gender preference (which seems hypocritical). Kaido is depressed knowing his life is a footnote in Joy Boy’s and that he wouldn’t be able to deliver the same despite all his power (compounded by facts like King ID’ing him as Joy Boy; which he knew he was not) and that in the conditions he thinks are a prerequisite for Joy Boy’s appearance he needs Yamato to be as strong as he is to survive and plausibly inherit Kaido’s will; as that’s the whole reason he’s even at Wano and he wants Yamato to take over: to amass a singular hurdle for Joy Boy and wait to meet him in a place he would no doubt come. And the way he attained power is misery, so that’s the path he paves for Yamato. Kaido is the top antagonist to date, IMO.
