Garden of Sinners Episode 6

Comments

So Episode 6 was completely overhauled because it was deemed too dark for anime audiences and thus very different from the original novel. The biggest being how they handled Akaza, the sister. As I mentioned in the YouTube shorts comment, in the book she is fully aware of the taboo nature of her lust for her brother, and constantly struggles with controlling and suppressing her impulses and thoughts. Another huge removal was the entire main villain (the mage Kurogiri’s) backstory, power and world building fundamental to future series (Fate, Tsukihime etc.) His backstory and powers (the Unified Language) is explained in detail which allows for a lot of lore involving the Spiral of the Root and the Mage association. The fight with him was mostly cut in the movie, making him seem a lot lamer. Ouji’s motivations are different in the book. The students in the school are being sexually trafficked by their teacher to clients around the area (A big issue in Japan when this was written). Her vendetta against the people who hurt her best friend makes a lot more sense. SPOILERS if you do plan to read the book: The girls in the school try to keep Shiki in the dark in order to prevent her from finding this out. All of them are plagued with religious guilt and pressure new girls to join into the trafficking ring. Eventually, this becomes too much and Kaori commits suicide. Her death causes Ouji to go into a murderous rampage trying to kill her classmates and her teacher. Akaza is able to talk her down, coming to terms with the ramifications of dark impulses, including her own. However, Ouji does kill the mage Kurogiri when she realizes that he has been the one pushing everyone to indulge in their dark desires. Episode 6 just feels off in comparison with the rest, which is a shame considering how much more interesting the original light novel is.
