Officially it has nothing to do with the sam raimi project that was going to happen but like....... its in this movie and if you've read the original hoax its 1 to 1 the same with the added information the hoax was created as guerilla marketing just to eventually make a movie out of it you can't ignore it's the same thing.

And I think you're onto something about the writer director's thesis..particularly because his first movie before this tracks very close to what you're saying.
