The One Where Joe Dies (maybe)
Added 2024-11-07 12:16:58 +0000 UTCSo we reach the end of Tomorrow Joe's story. Gotta admit, I gotta admit I didn't see it playing out this way.

Boxing used to be 15 rounds but they reduced it because the long matches led to a lot of boxers dying. Google tells me that the death of Korean boxer Kim Duk-koo in 1982 (so shortly after the second anime this movie is based on came out in 1980) led to the international boxing organizations changing the rules. The romance with Joe and Yoko works a lot better in the show though she's still hard to read. There's a scene in the first anime, shortly after Rikishi dies, where after he quits boxing for a year she tells him he needs to box again because he deserves to die in the ring to atone for killing Rikishi (joe also admits he has a death wish at that point - which you called when reacting to like, episode 2 of the show lol good call). It's interesting to see them go from that to something of a pair, with her definitely regretting those sentiments by this point. I like those scenes but get why they were cut (they're after the 'best end point' for adapting season 1 into a movie, but before the 'best start point' to adapt season 2) x_x

2024-11-10 20:33:38 +0000 UTCsome of these scenes were insanely rushed lol The korean guy he fights for about twelve seconds in this, is a whole 7 episode arc in the show. The korean dude has a PTSD flashback from the then recent Korean war during the match (which is shown here but not elaborated on) which fits the PTSD theme. tbh I didn't notice how strong that theme was in the show because it's more diluted out, in a movie where all the key plot is crushed together, it comes out more clearly. The girl who goes on a date with Joe briefly was in the first series too (she's the same age as Joe, he meets her when her parents fat-friend Nishi works for as a dayjob, ask him to deliver her lunch to her at school). It's kinda disconcerting seeing her suddenly appear half way through this movie without any introduction, but the "burn to white ashes" speech is pretty iconic + called back at the end, so they had to have the date i guess. She is in love with Joe but realizes he doesn't care about anything but boxing so goes with Nishi as a backup, it's very obvious to everyone even Nishi he is backup plan husband - i'm sad they cut the wedding dinner where Joe gives a "I remember when I met nishi in prison" best man speech as that was hilarious :Y The arc with the one black (malaysian) boxer is even more racist in the show. It's good that arc got cut down.

2024-11-10 16:29:02 +0000 UTCtbh this is my first time seeing the movie, i watched the series in 2019 . The film just cuts and arranges clips from the series, but it's the second series that came out 10 years after the original, hence the different (better) animation you mention. Interesting to see what they keep and what they cut out.
