The "UFO 50" Mega Review (Part 1)

UFO 50 is a retro throw-back collection of fifty games made by fictional company UFO Soft. It is one of the most interesting, fun, in-depth video game experiences out there.

Piph has been trying to get anyone in the world to play this game for over a year just so he can talk about it, and after literal months of playtime Jello is ready to chat with him. For 8 hours.

Part 2 is available for all Patrons. Watch it here!
Part 3 is available for $5 Patrons. Watch it here!

While the first part of this review is free on YouTube for everyone, this Patreon post is currently paywalled because it has this exclusive link to our chart rating every game in the collection here. Roll over each rating for fun and difficulty to see our notes. Jello's ratings are on the left and Piph's are on the right underneath each game.

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS FOR EVERY GAME IN THE COLLECTION. Some games in "UFO 50" are best experienced blind. If you want to play the game (you do) then we recommend skimming using the timestamps below in order to find games that interest you.

The "UFO 50" Mega Review (Part 1)

Comments

I think the best compliment I can give to this mega review is that it made me reinstall UFO 50

Yellow Ladybug

I actually started with Barbuta. I didn't bounce off for lack of enjoyment though, I bounced off cause ADHD made me want to play something else, and instead of something else being another UFO50 game it was Skullgirls for another 4 days. If you have a pen and paper and start drawing a map in Barbuta it becomes more fun, though there is some BULLSHIT

Daniel

You always do way more than most ppl would for side projects, it's insane. Every day I wonder how high the production value wouldve gone with Sweetwater

dollqueen

Consider me sold, I'll catch up with you guys in the other parts once I can put this thing down

Probably An Owl

Piph says Campuflage, I recommended Vainger

JelloApocalypse

I don't know if you're the type with any interest in strategy guides as collectibles, but Fangamer is putting out a UFO 50 strat guide sometime this spring

Aggressively Nill

For someone who has bit sitting on this game for a while, but who doesn't want to spoil themselves too much, what game do you recommend as the starter pick?

Noah Finch

okay, when you said on stream that Barbuta was the first game the company ever made, i assumed that it was an unlockable "secret first unpublished game in the company's history" and the joke was that after playing all these good games you go back to a purposefully bad game and see how far the devs have come the fact that it is Game #1 and THIS is the game that most people start with... yeah i see why piph tells people not to start with this one. thats an insane decision. thats how you kneecap your game's first impressions instantly. dont do that game devs it wont work out for you

PurpleIsDebeste

I DIDNT THINK THE QR CODE WOULD BE REAL!!!! thats so plaster coded tho

PurpleIsDebeste

That Big Dunkies QR code... I mean, I guess twelve hours of a rotating ASCII donut *is* some pretty big dunkies. Did you put that in yourself, or is Plaster to blame for that? (also, fun experience listening to this review: it's not a very common name, so whenever you'd go "Benedikt" with the stank on it because another game is *almost* good due to some questionable design decision, i'd keep having a half-second moment of panic like "huh?! what'd i do? i'm sorry!!!")

Benedict Ide

The AI patches for Bushido Ball is correct, I think it's been nerfed like three or four times? My favorite other trick about the game is that it's exponentially easier to gold/cherry in 2 player mode, because you only have to win 2 matches. I was absolutely flabbergasted when some friends of mine did that together while I was still struggling to gold SP.

Aggressively Nill

I'm not even done with Marvel yet!!
