Manga Book Club - Golden Kamuy [PART 3, Finale]

Don't forget, book club is this Saturday at 2pm EST! We're wrapping up Golden Kamuy, so if you've got something you'd like to read, be sure to suggest it below. Aloha and I are thinking a shoujo would be a nice change of pace.

I haven't read my assignment yet because I've been busy nursing the Anime OP video upload, so my discussion questions will have to be pretty basic this time around:

1. Who's your favorite character and why?

2. What was your favorite and least favorite tattooed prisoner arc?

3. You have to eat one thing they made in the manga. What is it?

Comments

I have read Komi and No It Absolutely Is Not

JelloApocalypse

It's probably too late for any other entries, but Komi Can't Communicate just ended recently and its exactly what Jello was asking for as a Slice of Life Shojo series.

So, I wound up binging the entire last third on the 28th, didn't realize until after that you were doing the book club the next day, decided to try and catch it live, and than I completely forgot like a dumbass lol. better late than never tho, so: 1) favorite character is hijitaka. I know its basic, but he's so goddamn cool, his gun of choice is one of my favorites, the winchester 1892, and he has such a fuckin legendary death, losing in glorious battle to the next generation who can carry the torch, and giving his sword to sugimoto to finish the fight. 2) favorite tattooed prisoner arc was prolly the two yakuza people who died saving each other from the bear attacking the car. genuinely, it's just nice to see an unironic gay relationship in any manga, cause so fucking many have insane homophobia or homophobic tones. least favorite prisoner is the animal r*** guy, its not even close, that whole thing was, more than just unnecessary, really, really gross. I respect noda's balls for just flat out drawing the thing and saying that "yeah no, this dude is a gross r******, he deserves death" but at the same time, like yall said, it contributed nothing at large to the story, so it really does just make me angry and grossed out. 3) problem with my mind, is the moment I've stopped reading it, I can't remember any of the food that was made in specific during the manga. The thing that always captured me more was the funny faces and reactions to the dishes characters had, and tbh. I'm a very lonely guy. so my choice would just be any of the hotpot meals where a big group of people are eating and spending time with me.

Call me Caesar

No manga reccs cause I actually never read manga all the way through, Golden Kamuy is the first one I have purely cause yall sold it so well in the first book club post. For the questions, 1: Favorite character's probably Asirpa. I knew nothing about the Ainu culture before reading this manga and learning about it was one of the most fascinating parts and she's of course the main window into that. I also found her desire to protect and remember her culture very compelling as someone who is also from a smaller culture being slowly subsumed into a wider one (Cajun in my case). Though the situations may be very different, it made it easy to empathize with her. 2: Favorite of the more episodic tattooed prisoner arcs is prob the Counterfeiter. The fake Ainu village was a really fun set piece, it was nice seeing how much Sugimoto had grown to respect the culture, and he and Ogata make for an interesting team to follow. Least favorite's definitely animal fucker. The guy fucks animals. Its weird and gross and why is everyone acting so impressed when he manages to fuck the bear God please let it end already. 3: For food I'll go with the kinaohaw that Huci makes when the visit Asirpa's villiage for the first time. Seemed like a pretty normal fish and vegetable soup. Pretty boring choice but you did say *anything* they make soooo. That said if I was gonna pick something weird, it'd be one of the various animal brains they try... but only after seeing Asirpa do it first. Multiple times, and waiting a bit to make sure she doesn't get sick first.... then yeah sure I'll give it a bite.

My only suggestion for a new manga is that you guys should just pick them from now on. I don't want to read another manga that sucks as much as pokemon did! Discussion questions: 1. I think my favorite character would have to be Tsurumi. It's just so fascinating to see a villain operate on lines of charisma and manipulation in a setting that's so chock full of violence and brutality. He's such a fucker, and it's always so stunning to see the different ways that he's outsmarted situations and fun to figure out when, if ever, he's being genuine about something. 2. My favorite tattooed prisoner arc was probably... weirdly, Keiji's little sub-arc in Sapporo? I dunno, he's short and sweet and a real piece of shit- that's all he needs to be, and it's fun, it works, and it adds a lot to one of the best arcs in the series. I think Toni Anji's arc is a close, close second though, because the concept is so fucking cool and I love the way the characters are used for the set piece. I also love the con artist guy. Least favorite is hard to pick, because honestly, most of the worst parts of the manga are certain convict-of-the-week sections, they can feel like a big departure of tone from the rest of what you're reading. I'd lump together the serial killer guy, the animal-fucker guy, and the bear multiple personality guy. Jack the ripper kinda counts but he's never played for laughs and it DOES connect to themes, though. 3. Man, I couldn't pick. I'm super squeamish and if I see something killed and prepared in front of me I'd be unable to eat it, even though I'm perfectly willing to eat other prepared meats all the time.

Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku!

Sokka

Princess Jellyfish would be a fun time for most of its time.

Rebecca Bieth

Chihayafuru. It is a Shojo manga that's also sort of a sports manga, but not your usual kind of sport.

Also the two leads have an actually good dynamic

Psycho

I vote for horimiya, its cute as heck from the clips ive seen

Psycho

if shoujo then I say Yona of the dawn! it's absolutely amazing and it's very near to the end, just 3 more chapters left and the manga will be complete!

BIBSSS

Pandora Hearts is my vote for this round! I've been wanting to re-read the series for awhile now, and voted for it on that last poll. I personally remember it being a convoluted mess, but overall net positive enjoyment. It might not be the best time for Jello and Aloha, but I'd bet Amy would have fun if she joined!
