Amy and I watched a two-season donghua (Chinese anime) about time traveling through photographs. We liked some of it. The rest . . . ?
Amy and I watched a two-season donghua (Chinese anime) about time traveling through photographs because it had two amazing openings. The first five episodes are so good!
I wonder how the rest of the show is.
checks
Uh oh!
Contains spoilers for both seasons, this is the kinda show where you can't really talk about it without spoiling anything. All you need to know is the first five episodes are great and then the rest isn't.

I watched through the end of the basketball arc, and i thought the implication was that his crush survived. Because the brother does react to the earthquake quicker than he might have, and instead of confirming her death, lime they did with the brother and mom, they focused on his wedding ring. Like I'm pretty sure the implication was that Cheng Xiaoshi actually managed to save one person.

I decided to give this show a watch after seeing its placement on the top anime openings list, and as such I haven't actually listened to this audio review yet, because I like to go into things as unbiased as I can. Based SOLELY on the text description up there though? Yeah you're totally right; this show starts out pretty good and starts sucking (or at least getting really boring) in Season 2. I enjoyed more of the latter half of Season 1 than you apparently did, but I thought the final arc/plotline would, ya know, finish up in the season finale. It didn't, and now they've kind of ditched the whole concept the show was sold and predicated on in favor of a murder mystery that's not actually a mystery??? The opening is still amazing, but it makes you think there's going to be a whole thing about how Lu is dead (Cheng touches his hazy image's fingertips and then gets rewound back through time, ripping him away from the image of the friend he can't get back), and even if there's probably going to have to be a whole time travel thing to get him back eventually, it's gonna be really difficult because there's this outside actor involved and also conflicts with the rules Lu himself set down! That isn't what I tuned into the show for, but at least it seems structurally interesting to some extent... but then, woah, psych! Turns out that didn't actually happen! Lu's not dead after all! Now here, let's spend the second episode watching this creepy lawyer dude with some completely pointless gangster guy trailing along behind him for ten minutes, then dedicate ten MORE minutes to a fight sequence that should've lasted one minute at most. A fight sequence which again *continues* into the next episode (which you won't even understand unless you caught the inexplicably difficult to find Episode 5.5 from last season), and takes like a third of the episode to resolve. Now, back to the police procedural we've inexplicably turned the show into! Marvel at this annoying rich dude and his equally annoying wife as they get approximately 400% more screentime than they deserve! Spend time at the funeral of this guy we knew for like half an episode and was literally only around to die! Remember when this show was anime quantum leap? Well too bad, now it's anime law and order with way worse pacing! It's fine if we completely ignore the whole conceit of the show; I'm sure the audience won't get frustrated three episodes into the season when the only time that ability has been used or even really come up in conversation is for a literal minute long scene at the very end of episode 3! Oh wait, we're finally using it again in Episode 4, thank goodness- no GODDAMN IT WE'RE STILL INTERSPERSING IT WITH THE POLICE PROCEDURAL SEGMENTS-
So yeah, the first season had a couple issues of its own (pick a damn way time works and stick to it already, please), but I've enjoyed functionally none of this season thus far and I'm pretty sure this plotline is going to keep going for the remaining 8 episodes, so I think this is where I stop. That, or skip to season 3 to see if it gets good again.
...now to actually listen to this review. ^^;

I am once again listening to this. I have no idea why but this systematic destruction of a donghua I've never watched has become a weird comfort listen. Every time I get to the bit about the crazy face lawyer villain it brightens my day tenfold! Absolutely hilarious

Jesus...
As much as I'd love to do an intensive takedown of 2003, the last time I watched it was a full franchise revisit, Brotherhood, the Manga, everything. I wouldn't feel right talking about it without revisiting the whole thing first and I really don't want to do that...

I just finished season 1, and it's kind of insane for much Cheng Xiaoshi does compared to the other two characters. He came up with the plan to stop Liu Min, he beat the shit out of him AND convinced Emma not to jump over the bridge. He's doing everything, and I have no idea why Lu Guang is even in the story. He just belittles Cheng Xiaoshi, even though he hasn't done anything of note the entire season. I haven't seen a main character with such nonexistent agency in some time.

quick comment completely unrelated to anything, this has probably been the case for a while but i only just noticed; a lot of the older gameplay videos now have subtitles (most notably dogs in love 1 and THE ENTIRE AA:I SERIES) which i love a lot, so big thanks to whoever it was that manages that on your channel

Maybe the killer can see the future to some degree. Each time the past is changed their future vision gets less accurate because things change unnaturally. They then kill the people to try to correct things to make their power more accurate.

That would actually be a pretty good way to justify the... weird equivocation between "oh no, the butterfly effect" and "the writers saw a Final Destination movie and decided that time works that way except when it doesn't" the show has going on, yeah! Time doesn't just happen to *work* like that- there's some asshole *doing* that!
(Provided they... came up with some good motivation for a villain to do that, which is a task the writers seem uninterested in.)

I have just reached the part of the episode where you start talking about Lawyer Man, and I'm gonna be honest- until this point, I thought the images you'd attached to this post were of the protagonist, your boy, and that was just the energy your normal-guy-who-reacts-to-things-in-normal-ways was bringing to the table. I *was* prepared to believe that, and was kind of excited to see a guy who looked like that as the protagonist of the show.

Can confirm, the first five episodes of Link Click are worth watching.

God I love Normal Lawyer Man. This is all I am taking away from this show, that dude is amazing and deserves his own comedy series. NO, A SLICE OF LIFE SPINOFF! Show us all his actual normal lawyer activities, but he's still screaming demon face the whole time. IT WOULD BE GOLD

If they wanted a serial killer villain, maybe they could've had a person with the ability to sense when someone's past has been changed, and kills them as some sort of course correction because they are not where they are supposed to be.

this was on my list after your anime openings stream, picked up a few titles off it. Good to know there isn't much reason to watch most of it. Did pick up Vinland Saga and binged both seasons and had a good time.
