What Animated Movies Should I Watch/Review?
Added 2023-12-31 02:45:34 +0000 UTCPeople responded well to me finally doing another batch of animated movies. So I guess I should just formally ask which ones you're interested in hearing me talk about!
I've been tracking the animated films I still need to see on Letterboxd. "There are 53,894 animated films." Watch them all or die trying, I guess!
Here's a list of various movies I have some level of interest in watching. Some are because I actually want to watch them. Some are because I've seen every movie a studio/director has made except [that one]. Some are because they look terrible and I bet I'll have fun reviewing it.
Also I want to watch Trolls 3, the Trolls movies are honestly pretty good and I like liking movies I feel like I shouldn't. It's much more fun that hating movies everyone else told me I would like.
Vote below! You can vote for as many films as you want, these are just some of the suggestions from the first few pages of Letterboxd's animation """"genre"""" even though it's a medium. I've put stars next to the ones I'm most interested in.
Feel free to comment more, Patreon only allows 25 options.
Also, for those interested, Bo and I will probably be watching One Piece movies together soon. So expect a very exhausted review of those at some point in the future.

You should check out Lego monkey kid. Went in with no expectations, and had a really good time.

2024-01-08 04:27:38 +0000 UTCI strongly suggest Hotwheels the acceleratoracers or hot wheels the world race, I like to know what your view on racing movies are.

2024-01-04 00:21:17 +0000 UTCI have no idea what you think of the Ninja Turtles franchise, but I thought the Batman vs Ninja Turtles movie from a few years ago was a fun watch. The Rise of the TMNT movie was also fun, though if you didn't watch the show I don't know how much you'd vibe w it. Mutant Mayhem was also fun...huh, I like a lot of Ninja Turtles stuff lol

2024-01-02 18:38:56 +0000 UTCI’ll also add Batman Ninja to the Batman films, I will warn you that the last confrontation is a stupid mecha fight but the animation is gorgeous, the rest of the fights are fun and it’s got some pretty good writing too!

2024-01-02 18:38:06 +0000 UTCHave you watched The Mitchells vs the Machines? It’s hilarious, heartwarming, and also delightfully animated with a refreshing art style. My boyfriend and I had a great time watching it on New Year’s Eve

2024-01-02 02:06:04 +0000 UTCI've definitely talked about Turning Red somewhere on here before. It's very good but I often use it as my ur example of why I don't like how the current wave of animation tackles generational trauma movies.

2023-12-31 20:34:00 +0000 UTCYou offhandedly mentioned Baccano at the end of your prior audio post, and I just wanna say, I at least would love to hear you gush over Baccano for two hours straight. But it also sounds like you might be able to refine said gushing into a "fred is the best character" style video... ~~so obviously the solution is make an unrefined gush for us, and then refine it for a public video!~~

2023-12-31 14:12:03 +0000 UTCOther animated movies that came out in 2023: The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken, and TMNT Mutant Mayhem. I know you’ve touched on it while talking about Encanto, but I don’t think you’ve given Turning Red its own review. I don’t know if you’ve already reviewed this, but I would like to suggest Arthur Christmas. It’s a collaboration between Sony Pictures Animation and Aardman from 2011 that has grown on me over the years and I would argue should have been nominated for Best Animated Feature (over Rango). For a future review, I’d like to hear your thoughts on every Muppet/Jim Henson movie.

2023-12-31 13:48:18 +0000 UTCOh man, I really hope it's Nimona and I hope you dislike it as much as I did. A few killer jokes, but otherwise it was like 5 minutes of fun stuffed into 90 minutes of movie. Also, man, 9! I remember liking that a lot when it came out and I haven't seen it since!

2023-12-31 12:09:54 +0000 UTCI'm not as versed in animated movies as I like to think I am. But I want to recommend 'The Triplets of Belleville.'

2023-12-31 10:25:52 +0000 UTCI'd really like to see your take on Nemona, while I know you're worried about seeing it I think you'll enjoy it well enough and if I'm wrong I'll eat my own words I guess. personally I found it to be a fun movie with a good message

2023-12-31 09:46:18 +0000 UTCI'd be very interested to see you do some kind of audio where you talk about all of Satoshi Kon's work. (not sure if you'd want to include paranoia agent in that since it's an anime series but it's only 13 eps and on letterboxd, so) He's one of my favorite directors, you've already seen most of his stuff so it wouldn't be hard to just watch the rest of his work.

2023-12-31 09:05:21 +0000 UTCYup, I was misremembering, it was his #1 from the Ghibli review. Found the link if you wanna deep dive: https://www.patreon.com/posts/19329988?utm_campaign=postshare_fan Princess Mononoke segment starts around 28:30 Also, big recommend the 10 words review on Youtube as well. :)

2023-12-31 08:56:23 +0000 UTCOfc, all this said, I do understand Nemona and Spiderverse near the top, and fully agree. Amazing movies in their own right, especially stylistically.

2023-12-31 08:43:24 +0000 UTCBit of a shame Spies in Disguise is as low as it was. Wound up forced to go to that movie and fully expected it to be the standard mundane animated movie fare, but I was plesantly surprised by that one. Not a masterpiece by any means, but a genuinely fun movie with some legitimately cool spy action scenes. The trailers do that one no favors.
Alec
2023-12-31 08:39:06 +0000 UTCHe's already seen and reviewed it in the past. I don't THINK it made top three for his Ghibli ranking video, but it's been a hot minute. I'm sure you can find his thoughts on it if you dig around the patreon for a bit.

2023-12-31 08:33:01 +0000 UTCI have doubts that this would be your thing but A Scanner Darkly is a rotoscoped animated movie that looks like a GTA3 cutscene nightmare (by modern standards its probably easy to compare its visual style to AI art but this was made in 2006 and has a lot more purpose behind it) that’s about an undercover cop who is addicted to a fictional drug (called Substance D) and is depersonalizing and hanging around with his other drugged out friends (including Robert Downey Jr who basically plays Dale Gribble by way of Walter Sobchak from The Big Lebowski) as hes essentially assigned to spy on himself. its a harrowing yet sympathetic look at drug users and the circumstances that lead people into getting addicted, as well as the law enforcement agencies that use these people as pawns for their own ends. you really get the sense that the story doesnt have an aim of disparaging or judging these addicts and just wants to show an honest portrayal of what it feels like being addicted to mind-altering substances. it doesnt feel like a didactic anti-drug PSA like a lot of other stories about this subject are. The book is still probably better but this film adaptation has some great performances and unique visual presentation, give it a watch if it seems interesting to you. It’s a Phillip K Dick story though so I wouldn’t go in expecting a particularly uplifting time.

2023-12-31 07:37:22 +0000 UTCConsidering Paprika and Perfect Blue are on the list, I'm surprised Tokyo Godfathers isn't. I guess for your double-feature format though it's hard to pair up with something on this list.
Azelhia
2023-12-31 07:07:34 +0000 UTCSomeone might've already asked, but have you seen Tokyo Godfathers? I noticed it's not on the list, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on Satoshi Kon's films.

2023-12-31 04:42:10 +0000 UTCIf you can get access to them, the movies by Light Chaser Studios are incredible. They mostly make retellings of Chinese myths and legends, but with aesthetic twists, like sci-fi elements or sky ships. Green Snake and Yang Jian are my personal favorites.

2023-12-31 04:08:39 +0000 UTCHave you considered doing a batch review for all the Mamoru Hosoda movies like you did for Makoto Shinkai? I know that like half of them are just Digimon: Our War Game variants but hey maybe get Marisa in on it lol.

2023-12-31 03:53:45 +0000 UTCIf you're interested in something more experimental/mature to break up the kiddie stuff, Jonni Phillips' BARBER WESTCHESTER and Don Hertzfeldt's IT'S SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY are both fantastic showcases of how affecting a more "lo-fi" animation style can be (and the former is free on YouTube!)

2023-12-31 03:13:12 +0000 UTCOh hey, I see Redline in that image! I remember really enjoying that movie; the plot's a kinda-cliche "nobody loser with mob debts strives to overcome all odds to win the Wacky Races and get the girl" but the visuals were stunning and fun to watch, with some fun jokes here and there too.

2023-12-31 03:09:06 +0000 UTCYou know Tokyo Godfathers is another animated movie by the same director as Paprika/Perfect Blue/Millenium Actress. It takes place between Christmas & New Years!

2023-12-31 02:53:13 +0000 UTCOnly watch Wish if you're interested in discussing the modern state of the Disney Corporation. That is the only thing to talk about with it because it's such a nothing of a movie.

2023-12-31 02:53:01 +0000 UTCWhen it comes to the Batman movies I feel like under the red hood requires a little context from the comics to see why it’s good. That feels like something you might hate going in depending on whether you have it or not. Not as bad as marvel and how that works but still it assumes you know at least some lore. Mask of the phantasm is a better experience with the animated series, which honestly might be worth a watch on its own. Thats definitely a well voice acted and animated show that served as a gateway for a lot of people into some of the Batman mythos. It’s important to remember that it’s a tie in to an entire series.
