Superman (2025)

Comments

Not sure how I feel about this Superman movie. There are stuff I have questions. Instead of introducing the characters, they're just inserted in and if you don't know the comics, you'll be lost on who's who and why are they the way they are? Especially those who are fans of Christopher Reeves Superman, but don't follow the comics. Who's Hawkgirl? Why is she called Hawkgirl? Because she flies, dresses like a bird, and yells like a Hawk? lol In Guardians of The Galaxy, everyone was introduced and we learn their backstory. In this Superman, "This is Mr. Terrific, he's smart and plays with his balls, go." Superman is secondary in his own movie. How does Superman have a dog and his cousin Supergirl? Don't know, No explanation. It's like we missed something before watching this Superman. Why does Lex Luthor hate Superman besides the fact he's the villain? Don't know. Plus that speech at the end is a little preachy. Even the actor playing Superman questioned James Gunn about it. I still like it. Kara aka Supergirl and Krypto are my favorites.

As someone who reads a lot of comics, this is my favorite Superman movie by far. This isn't a perfect movie, no, but that's a ridiculous expectation of any movie, to be honest, let alone a comic book movie. There's no such thing as media without flaws. But of all the recent superhero movies, this is the one that is most willing to take a stand on real world social commentary--it never flinches from saying that global politics should come second to human suffering, that being an "alien" doesn't mean you shouldn't have rights (Superman is in immigrant metaphor, after all), that caring and empathy (as opposed to power and might) are the truly punk rock values that Superman embodies. The allegory to Israel/Palestine is hardly subtle. In the era of Disney trying to sanitize any message that might cost them a buck, I found it a brave and refreshing approach. Comics are frequently silly, but they're also deeply progressive and critically aware media in many ways, and the movie is VERY comic book that way. Silly at times on the surface, but packing a punch underneath. (Honestly the opposite of the Snyder take, imo. Snyder's stuff looks cool on the surface, but any critical approach to his work reveals that it's pretty inconsistent and shallow.). Yeah, there's a little too much over the top stuff sometimes, but I think that's meant to balance and lighten a real-world commentary and tone that would otherwise leave us feeling apathetic at the heartlessness of our species rather than hopeful that we can overcome it.

I know this is an older reaction, but I wanted to put my two cents out here: This version of superman is perhaps the most reflective of our actual society as it is today. The whole thing of people turning on Superman in a heartbeat because of narratives pushed online? That's just... real. That happens ALL the time.

Rav Low

Hawkgirl first appeared in Flash Comics #1 in January 1940. Created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Dennis Hard to see how she was "Marvelized." Try watching the animated JUSTICE LEAGUE television series, particularly JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED. Made 2004-2006, still the best representation of the actual comics Justice League in movies or television. Guy Gardner's first appearance was in Green Lantern #59, published in March 1968. He's always an asshole, that's his point: to be the one asshole Green Lantern. (As opposed to Earth's Hal Jordan and John Stewart and Kyle Rayner, and all the 1597 other Green Lanterns in the galaxy. The bowl haircut is intentionally deeply stupid. It's just one way it's obvious that Guy is an idiot. Always, in every appearance ever anywhere. But he's still a good guy. Just an asshole good guy.

Mysterious Science Fiction Fan

They are my favorite reactors but when they didn't like Expanse, it kind of made me realize that there's going to be some reactions that disappoint me because they didn't like the movie /tvshow as much as I did. It's weird cos when the movie starts, it seems like they're definitely going to like it. As it goes on, it completely takes me by surprise when I realize that they're not fans of it. I didn't bother finishing the reaction... but they're still my fav reactors.

Joits

I’m sorry you guys didn’t like it as much, but this is by far my favorite version of Superman in film. And to your criticism of the jokes and quippy stuff, its not that it’s specifically trying to emulate marvel, it’s just James Gunn doing his thing. That’s why Warner bros hired him to head DC. To make it more light and fun, that’s his style. You have to expect it going into a James Gunn movie. But I don’t believe they’ll all be like that. This one was specifically written and directed by James Gunn. Most of the new DC films won’t be singularly headed up by him.

Jason Dreibeblis

Personally, I've always found the complaints about Marvel movies to be absurd. You don't order a hotdog thinking you're getting fine french cuisine. A hotdog is a hotdog, if you wanted Casablanca go watch Casablanca.

parker469a

Ultraman here is a reference to a Superman analog from Earth 2 who is part of the Crime Syndicate, and evil version of the Justice League.

Robert Cooper

Exactly. This is not a justice gang movie. This isnt a guy gardiner movie or hawkgirl movie. Id argue the reason we got more of mr terriffic is because he is by and far less known than the other two and im glad he was showcased here. We will get more focus on the other two in future movies which is more than good.

Immeasurably Me

yes. Ultraman is also a long running show/movie franchise in Japan. he tends to fight Kaiju.

Onikaze

yeah i'm in the same boat. i love superman from the animated universe and from the (not that many) comics i have read, but none of the movies have really done it for me. This is a solid B for me, which is good but not great. i dont understand a lot of the criticism i have seen about 'jokeyness' in it, there are some comedic moments but it did not feel like a jokey movie to me. very subjective though, cant really argue about it

TivAcrid

I gave this film a 7 and they seemed to enjoy the movie about as much as I did. Good film, great soundtrack. Simone looked shook when Krypto got smothered in the nanites. I don't think they hated on this film at all. I am a huge comic fan and I can respect the reactions of people who aren't aware of the heavy lore but honestly saying that they tried hard to hate this film makes no sense to me. :P

nossieboy

This is my favourite Superman movie. Bummed you guys didn't like it that much, but opinions are opinions! I'd still love to see a reaction to The Suicide Squad and then maybe Peacemaker, since I think both are better than Superman, for as much as I enjoyed it. I didn't get some of the criticism, like the imp scene that others have mentioned, since it was never played for laughs. The other thing I don't get-and this is something almost everyone does-is criticising the small roles for Guy and Hawk Girl. This only seems to happen with superhero movies, because I don't see it elsewhere. It's like, if you're wearing a costume then you should be a focal point, but sometimes side characters are just side characters. Again, this isn't a dig or anything because I see it all the time. I just think it's funny it only really happens in this genre. Anyway, I hope the more negative comments don't get you down. The internet likes to get irrationally mad about opinions. It's silly and you guys are great!

Richard Wakeling

It's weird how hard they tried to not like this movie. Simone literally cried over Rorschach killing the child-eating dog in Watchmen, but screw Krypto I guess lol.

Benjamin-Ian Astley-schaack

ok

Corncobtv

Well that was disappointing. Opening 3 mins, awesome, then a flying dog turned up and everything plummeted downhill from there 😂 its time for people to acknowledge Mr Gunn got VERY lucky with the Guardians franchise probably due to the cover from above he had in D'esposito, Fiege and Fine assisting. He has now proven time & again that outside of the structure of the MCU setup, he just cant reproduce 'the magic' elsewhere.

Darren Boyle

I think part of that is expectations. Going into a FF movie that doesn't have the best reputation and it turns out to be decent you are a little surprised that it wasn't that bad. This movie had a lot of build up and expectations were high. It fell a little short for me and I mostly agree with what G and S said but I still enjoyed and want to watch it again. It just didn't completely fulfill my expectations.

Andrew

I hope you guys reacting to Superman will hopefully result in reactions to the DC Animated Universe. It's several fun shows consisting of: -Batman: The Animated Series -Superman: The Animated Series -Batman Beyond -Static Shock -The Zeta Project -Justice League -Justice League Unlimited All of them are fun shows and great ways to get familiarized with the DC universe and its characters. They'd make great reactions.

Jeb Manning

Should've known the energy in the video would've been off. Lol

Brent bmc_comix

I hope you doing Superman will mean you'll also do Peacemaker and Creature Commandos as short TV reactions. Both shows are a lot of fun, and the only prerequisite viewing is The Suicide Squad, which you've already seen.

Jeb Manning

Well said! Gunn has said how much Hong Kong cinema has influenced him because it will allow absurdity to exist in a serious story and not break it, and he excels at those emotional moments! Pa Kent had me in near tears. Compared to the completely hollow Man of Steel where no one has any feelings except maybe apathy, and that's even a bit of a stretch. Lol loved this movie! Gonna do another rewatch!!! Lol

Brent bmc_comix

I’ve been into James Gunn since Super, way before Guardians. What I love about his style is how he seamlessly blends crass humour with genuine sincerity. That’s exactly what Man of Steel lacked—it felt boring and overly self-important, like it was trying to be profound without actually saying much. As for the Marvel comparison, I don’t see it. Even Guardians felt held back by the MCU. Gunn’s best work is The Suicide Squad (2022), where he’s totally unfiltered. Most superhero movies play it safe, trying to “ground” the weird stuff. Gunn doesn’t do that. He leans into the absurd and treats it like it’s normal, which makes his worlds feel more alive. Superman (2025) is probably his least jokey film. Take the scene with Lois at Superman’s apartment while the lightshow imp fights the Justice Gang in the background. It’s bizarre, sure, but the characters play it completely straight. The scene’s mostly tight close-ups, and the fight is out of focus and barely acknowledged. It’s treated the same way someone might glance out their window and see a bird. That framing sells the idea that this world is fundamentally different. The MCU feels like our world with superheroes dropped in. This feels like a fully built universe, shaped by the fact that metahumans revealed themselves centuries ago. That’s why people record kaiju sightings instead of running -- they’ve adapted. I also disagree that the Justice Gang is unnecessary. They highlight why Superman stands out, not just because of his powers, but because of his values. Their motivations are more self-serving, and each member brings a distinct perspective. Their actions in Jarhanpur reinforce what Superman represents. Honestly, I don’t think you’d mind these characters if they weren’t superpowered. What’s the real difference between the Justice Gang and a side character in any other movie? They’re there to support the main story. Gunn just treats even the weirdest ones like real people, not punchlines. That’s what makes his worlds feel lived-in, more so than the MCU does, even after 30+ movies. Also, sidenote, I will not accept the criticism "too many jokes ruined emotional beats" from people who cried watching deadpool & wolverine.

Ballsac McGee

Sweet! Please give Peacemaker Season 1 a shot. James Gunn directed most episodes and it is tied into Superman.

MarsOneUp

Agreed!

Brent bmc_comix

There's more humor, but I never thought it as being more like Marvel. Rather, this film is the most DC Silver Age of comics, which had a lighter and funnier tone. Chris Reeves is still my favorite, but Superman 2025 is miles ahead of the dreary, dark, gritty Ayn Rand fevered dream that is Man of Steel.

Herby Ragan

Is this the first video in 3 years that Simone called the channel "Cinebinge"?

Shawn B

I will add Superman: Up in the Sky - same theme as the others and a great storyline consistent with the Superman we all know and love.

Adam K

Guys seriously. Please watch The Suicide Squad. Please watch Peacemaker. And while I’m at it, please watch Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn.

BoredLittleLady

I think it's why they are the villains in the Thumbnail... super-haters! Lol 😆

Brent bmc_comix

Their reaction has been re-uploaded. Their harsher criticism has been removed.

Brian Bland

I am super surprised how much you two didn’t like it. Honestly you two normally spend so much time always trying to find the beauty and joy of every movie that I thought you might relate to Superman in that sense. It’s okay for you not to like this one but this is the only reaction I have ever seen of yours where you two seem to focus on how much you dislike things rather than focus on what you do like. Idk it was a little weird to see you two be so negative about something.

Emptysea93

From the comments I’m really interested in watching this review when I get a chance. This is was one I would have bet that they would at least enjoy. But I can understand if they didn’t love it, but I want to keep my thoughts to myself until I watch and see the review and what their actual objections and dislikes were.

Jaime Medina

I think what stood out to me on this one is that there are a LOT of bad movies reacted to on this channel (Fantastic Four anyone?) and for some reason this one was more a lean into being a critical review. I know that’s the instinct of LOTS of people when they watch this movie for some reason, but just felt a bit out of character for the usual reactions.

Adam K

damn simone you are so beautiful

Chris Hewlett

Well said!

Brent bmc_comix

Yeah really bummed out by this vid, movie's still awesome, tho! Lol :)

Brent bmc_comix

Uh, excuse me, that's Gary to you.

Jeff K

You should react to Peacemaker. Its pretty funny

Stoodles

Most of the problems that you guys mentioned are basically just ignorance, which is fine. This is a universe that was moving long before we caught on. - Why is Guy Gardner's hair so stupid? Because Gunn chose to be more comic-accurate. In the comics, Guy is an asshole with a horrible haircut. - This is way too Marvel. Well, James Gunn basically created the tone for Guardians of the Galaxy, which worked and was replicated in many different movies. So this 'vibe' is James's vibe, not Marvel's. Also James himself said that this is the theme for this movie; it doesn't mean that the other DCU movies will be the same. Each one will have its own style and even genre. - Too many dog jokes. This is something I straight up don't understand. I love Krypto; I don't really have an argument for that. - Who are these people? This is not an origin story; stuff has been happening for three centuries.. That being said, it is okay if you still didn't like it. I just want you guys to understand that there are reasons for pretty much everything.

yudha

Yeah I don’t get the focus on that as a “joke”. Like I think the introduction of it is supposed to be funny but I think after that it’s just there to provide a cool background and lighting for the scene. You’re not supposed to be laughing at it the whole time.

Jim Johnson

No one mentioned Alan Tudyk voicing Robot #4?

Roy A

Not a great one

Fuckerage

I can agree that there are 2-3 too many krypto gags but I thought the tone was fine. Marvel ad DC comics are not so different in print and it was snyderverse that went very heavy into the dark tone.

Greg Johanson

Would pay them direct to do Flash Gordon

Forkbeard83

Something I've noticed when actors are cast for the big 2 DC heroes, Superman is a relative unknown actor (Reeves, Roth, Cavil, & this gent), but Batman is more established one ( Keaton, Kilmer, Clooney, Bale, Affleck, Paterson)

Forkbeard83

Growing up with comics this is my favorite take on Superman but it still has it flaws

Matt88g

Simone not being a big fan of Krypto is the most unexpected thing I've ever seen on this channel.

Jeff K

And Creature Commandos!

Brent bmc_comix

I liked the movie but didn't love it. Still prefer it to any other Superman movie. Just wish I could have connected with the characters more like I have in some of Gunn's other Superhero works. I enjoyed Creature Commandos for instance, which was a tiny bit of a lead into this movie, barely.

Kyle B

Posting my comment again here: Also would like to recommend to everyone, visit your local bookstore and pick up All-Star Superman and Superman for all Season! READ MORE COMICS!!!!! 😊

Brent bmc_comix

Basically, if you want to be caught up with the new DCU, you can watch The Suicide Squad (2021), the series Peacemaker (2nd season now) and with this you'll be all caught up. The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker are one of the best things ever (a lot more adult orientated than the PG Superman).

Chris B

Yes, loved this movie and so excited for the new Supergirl movie next year, and the Lex/Superman team-up movie "Man of Tomorrow" the year after that!!! :)

Brent bmc_comix

This is the most comic accurate Superman, yes even Green Lantern Guy Gardner's haircut, Guy is also an ass in the comics. This is by far my favorite live action Superman movie. Cavil was ok, but in my book Superman isn't a brooding Batman figure that murders his own father to keep his secret.

TalynOne

Yeah that bummed me out too, woke up super early for this! Lol :(

Brent bmc_comix

This is such a great film!!! :)

Brent bmc_comix

I feel this was like a mid phase marvel movie where I didn’t know most of the ensemble. I think he can be a good Superman, but I felt it was an odd intro. I’m cautiously optimistic.

Jason Pratt

aw man you guys didn't like?? darn

Chris

Superman IV done well. Is Flash Gordon or Catwoman next?

jmundt33a

No such thing as objective opinion

Dalton Kennedy

Love Krypto!!! :)

Brent bmc_comix

The Lois and Superman scene with the dimensional imp is perfect!!!

Brent bmc_comix

No George!!!! Man of Steel is the worst Superman movie!!! Not trying to argue or be mean, but that's objectively true!!!! Also Man of Steel is completely devoid of emotion!

Brent bmc_comix

The humor in this movie is near totally perfect and appropriate and not an issue! The only scene that maybe went on a bit long was the garage, even then it worked, I feel this critque is invalid, no offense intended!!! Love this movie!!!

Brent bmc_comix

play the video in this post, pause it and you will see "Copy Link" at the top right corner of the video.

lalaland

How do i open the youtube link? I usually watch these on my tv anr therefore need to add them to a playlist

Hansy

oh man, my granddad loves Paacemaker, it really touched his heart.

lalaland

The only thing you need to watch before getting to Peacemaker is The Suicide Squad from 2021. I highly recommend Paacemaker, especially with season 2 out now

ChristianK

Green Lantern is comic accurate. Stop questioning it.

Mushie Motion

I really liked how they just jump into it on this movie. We don't need to see his origin again. Everybody knows the story at this point so why waste time. This movie does have some issues but I really liked their approach and Nicklaus absolutely nailed Lex, I don't care what anyone says, he was great.

Christina Doxstader

A point on George`s criticism that I also share about the joke-y tone of the movie. That has been James Gunn`s trademark for about 30 years now and after the success of GOTG in Marvel they shifted to a similar tone for most other properties so in a way this was inspired by the Marvel movies that Gunn himself inspired. I also think its hard to balance the real world parallels between the Gaza conflict/Ukraine War that the movie clearly is talking about with a more superhero-y story so you have to compromise somewhere and tone is where they chose to do so.

Boyan Konov

George I admire your restraint for not just putting Guy Gardner’s bowl cut on Simone in the thumbnail.
