Fantastic Four (2005)

Comments

Nice that they used the Product Placement section to pay for all those Extra NPCs that were following them everywhere. There are a lot o ppl in this movie

13:02 ~ So in the Marvel universe, do people know about other superheroes and stuff? Hard-core Marvel fans; correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that in the Marvel Comics, everyone exists in the same world. So the Fantastic Four know about the Avengers and vice versa. Both are aware of Spiderman. Daredevil has worked with the Iron Fist. Everyone may or may not have heard of the Inhumans at some point... So, yeah, they all share the same world. It always used to bug me that all the other heroes would be celebrated and adored while the X-Men were shunned and hated. It's like "Make up your minds, people!" Seriously though, what was the deal with that?

You asked about the perspective of the comic fans on this Dr. Doom, and it is not positive. Other people already talked about how the comic is so much GRANDER than what we see here, but I'll talk about his personality instead of his abilities/skills. One of his driving comic characteristics is the UNREASONABLE blame he puts on Reed Richards for his physical scarring. In the comics Reed is either completely not responsible (Usually presented as Von Doom ignoring Reed's advice on safety, and then claiming that Reed sabotaged him when Reed's prediction came true) or only caused a very minor scar whereas Von Doom's massive overreaction and attempt to fix it is what caused his massive disfigurement. Whereas here, Richards actually IS responsible for what happened (At least somewhat). He did miscalculate or misjudge that whacky space stuff, and that is the sole cause of Von Doom's changes here. It doesn't justify his murderous vendetta, but it's whole different angle for what is one of his singular driving motivations. Opening the film by having the lead scientist mess up the science did not start it on the right foot.

George, you might already know this by now but since I'm just getting to this reaction and you asked: the new Ben Grimm is Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who you just saw as Skeen, one of Vel's crew, in Andor. And if you ever get around to watching The Bear, he's won two Emmys for that show for Best Supporting Actor. He's fucking amazing (and he was great as Ben Grimm). It's also a cool casting choice because Ben Grimm is canonically Jewish, and Ebon is the first actual Jewish actor to play him. The Thing is largely inspired by the Golem, so having him be Jewish is actually important to his character.

They know to ignore bastard Fant4sitc. There's no reason to watch that.

Something I know to be true from the thumbnail, but cannot prove: Simone attended the Joey Tribbiani Smell the Fart Acting Academy. Also, Dr. Doom is my favorite character in the entire Marvel universe, so this portrayal was bound to fall short of the character I love. Still, it's not bad under the circumstances. This was a low-stakes, low-spectacle story, and this was the perfect Doom for a story with so little ambition. In the comics, Doom's plans are never so mundane. They are grand, epic, operatic. His goal in this film is beneath comics Dr. Doom. It's as if Michael Jordan's ambition was directed at winning a participation trophy.

Simon Pegged Me

That might be difficult to do as Chiklis wanted to use practical effects.

REDR58

Reed Richards as having a water super power is a good call if you see the others as elemental powers.

Daniel Smith

The problem with this movie is that the actor did a good job, but the script and motivations did not.

Jose Robles

The element most hated by fans is how they did DOCTOR DOOM. In the comics he’s a wizard and robotics genius who took over his birth country. Whilst he is a villain, vain and jealous of Reed he’s also implied to be a good leader of his people plus scary whilst this one is just a typical evil businessman. Think the actor did very well with what he is given though

Anthony James Marshall

The knew Fantastic Four is more accurate to the comics and has better character moments for 3 of the characters but I think this is the best filmed version of THE THING easy

Anthony James Marshall

Particularly the second.

jmundt33a

:-) This is actually true of all of them except for, as usual, poor Ben.

Happy Hanukkah

Although I love both of these movies because they’re the ones I grew up watching, I still feel really bad and heartbroken over everything that Jessica Alba had to go through while shooting this films😞

ChristianK

I live in a small town in Oklahoma and people are always pulling up at stop lights trying to race each other. Old shit boxes would even do it lmao

Kameron Webb

8:10 Paging Dr. Christian Troy. Also, whoa! I just learned that Julian McMahon passed away last month. RIP. Which leads me to tastelessly immediately advocate for Red (2010).

Happy Hanukkah

He can go to pee without leaving the bed

Inkpendude

32:54 "He's a blanket!" Yes. A wet one. :-) :-P

Happy Hanukkah

ya iirc George said how it was basically fantastic four and Simone looked lost lol

lalaland

The Thing should be at least about 2 times bigger to match the comic.

Matt O'Keefe

Didn’t they talk about the power spread when they watched The Incredibles? RIP Julian McMahon. They were going to bring him back for Phase 6

jmundt33a

I have seen him in King Arthur, as a rich philanthropist in Castle and he had a one season show in which he played an immortal. Forgot the name but every time he "Dies" there he wakes up naked in the Hudson River and his butler always waits there with fresh clothes...he doesn't know why this happens and so on.

TomGas2025

Ioan Gruffudd was last seen on the channel as the guy who pees on people for money from Horrible Bosses. I do not know what else he has done.

Matt O'Keefe

I am surprised that Simone is not The Thing in the thumbnail.

Matt O'Keefe

Which seeks to answer the question: "What if instead of starlet Jessica Alba, they had hired Cate Blanchett?" :-) (By the way, in this thumbnail Simone is not bad as Mister Fantastic, but George absolutely steals the show as Invisible Woman!!!)

Happy Hanukkah

Eh. I'm holding out for the Fabulous Five. Simone: "I can *see* three people/powers." Ba-dum-tss! :-) :-) :-) The fantastic Reed Richards is played by Ioan Gruffudd, which obviously means I have to recommend the previous year's King Arthur (starring Clive Owen and Keira Knightley), in which he portrays Lancelot.

Happy Hanukkah

Oh that ist one cool thumbnail...
