Better Call Saul: Season 5 - Episode 3 & 4 - Uncovered Version

Comments

The uncovered videos are giving me a chance to catch up, since I don't have access to my own copy when I'm not at home. I think Jimmy's conversation with Lalo after making the deal with Krazy-8 is the PERFECT encapsulation of the difference between who he is now and who he becomes in "Breaking Bad": One of the very first things we saw Saul do in BB, in his first episode, was recommend that Walt & jesse kill Badger to keep him from talking. Even though Badger was his client, once he saw that there was money to be found in keeping him quiet his first idea was just to kill him. it was only after Jesse refused that he floated the idea of having somebody else confess and go to jail in their place. Here, we see that even though he's absolutely terrified of Lalo, he takes the time to advocate for Krazy-8 and convince Lalo not to kill him for being a snitch. I always find it weird that I'm siding with the Soulless Corporation, but I'm squarely on the side of Mesa Verde when it comes to that guy and his house. He is the one who agreed to this deal, and he went in with his eyes open. He never once says that he didn't understand what he was signing, or that his own lawyer betrayed him and slipped in this proviso without him knowing. He doesn't even claim that the situation has changed recently in some unique way (For example, a terminally ill loved one who has nowhere else to live out their last days). So he's the one going back on his word in what seems like a fair deal. Plus, they're not just offering him $5k (or $18k) and saying "That's it". They're offering him that, PLUS market rate for the land. That's a fair deal all the way around. The sentimental connection certainly isn't nothing, but you don't get to break Your Word just because it's inconvenient to follow through. That's the whole point of giving Your Word in the first place. I agree that Jimmy going to work at HHM would be a mistake -- even leaving aside the fact that he's doing skeevy work for skeevy clients -- but Howard's offer strikes me as honest and sincere. He's trying to make up for the past, and also showing real appreciation for Jimmy's skill and intelligence. But Jimmy just can't accept it. And Simone, the GUFFAW you got out of me when you referenced Angel Investigations could have been heard across the street!
