Scrap metal dealers are the best place to find surplus barrels cheap.

Adam Ingram

Oh dang I actually liked this way more on rewatch than I remembered! George I think you hit the nail on the head about how this time the main antagonist really *feels* like the main antagonist and is just about as interesting as Hannibal. Also Simone, as someone who doesn't drive very much and recently needed to drive a U-Haul, I totally relate to what you were saying about unfamiliar vehicles being kind of scary xD Also omg I think you guys would have such a good time with the Hannibal show. It's *exactly* what you were describing with Hannibal out and about in his prime. And honestly? As absolutely incredible as Anthony Hopkins is, I think Mads' Hannibal is better. Not as big and theatrical, more quietly seductive. And I cannot get enough of how Mads plays it. (Also Lawrence Fishburn is in it playing a total chaos gremlin and it's like my favorite thing 😂)

Marylou inProgress

The book was astonishing. You started off hating the villain intensely. Then it took you back to his past, and you felt so bad and sorry for him. In part three, you switched back from sympathy to loathing him again. Hell of a ride.

Mark Alex Leach

Mary Louise Parker's best role, in my opinion, was in Red, where she starred with Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman and Brian Cox. (2010) So worth watching!

Mark Alex Leach

I really wanted George to say "1, 2, 3, play... Oh, and for those who skipped the intro," and then retell Simone's entire barrel story, every detail.

Gary Fixler

its almost as if they explain it in the video...

robodong

Did they just skipped Hannibal 2001 ??

Robb

Good barrel story. doing things with your hands is very rewarding. NOTE: using barrels to burn is great but has you said...the bottom burns out and can rust with rain. If you can get a hold of a drill that can bore through metal....drill holes in the bottom so rain water can drain out. rusting metal will decay faster when in contact with hot fires.... ALSO: pour out the ash frequently because rain water will mix with ash and that will cause it to rust faster. The barrel's bottom will still decay in time, but you start this habit, the barrel will last longer.

Nate Terry

"Breaking Barrel" starring Simone, and some guy named Pete. Tagline: "That's my barrel. I don't like new things, they're scary. I really... like....burning .... stuff., mugahaha." Best opening ever.

Eric Haines

Hannibal TV Show is absolutely worth a watch.

DinChild

Eenie meanie miney malls, grab a tiger bwut the fu...?

Manhunter is the best version of this movie. Red Dragon may not be bad but Manhunter is so much cooler - I feel, at least. The two movies are super similar. This movie's cast is VERY strong. You'll recognize them all I'm sure. "Gardening.." "It's about pot!" xD hahahaha The show Weeds is friggin' awesome. Ya'll should react to it, I feel. :) I'd love to see it on a poll. hahahaha, I am in love with Simone's predictions! hahahahaha, they're so friggin' funny! xD You won't in this movie but if ya'll continue we can watch Hannibal BEFORE he was Anthony Hopkins. It isn't as great a movie as all of these so far but it's still a good watch regardless, I feel. :) Wait a sec - you both haven't watched Hannibal yet? DansGame I love that one! This is a prequel. lol, yup = this sequence is very 7. She's been in other things as well - Weeds is just the best known thing that she's been in. I really like the actress. lmao - I knew about the upcoming jump scare - but GEORGE freaked me out with that in combination! xD hahaha, wow! This movie isn't a scary one for me at all but George made me jump. :P lol, he didn't get spoodge thrown at him! They did say that, yes! :) lol, Dr. House levels of investigative skills? Awesome comparison but kind of random. I don't remember watching House reactions on here.. but I'm probably wrong and just having a goldfish moment. Not sure. lol - that's totally Ray Phines, yeah. Yup! Good call Simone. :) That's how you dial out without any keypresses on those old phones. Francis Dollarhyde is the villain's name. No, no, George is right. She's blind. Accurate, George. Good call on that. lol, yeah - this isn't a Hannibal movie, just one that includes him. Francis Dollarhyde's mega creepy but the way he behaves around people is understandable. So it makes it even more unlikely that he'll be found out. :D It makes me so happy that you both are enjoying the movie! :) This may be a weak movie in my eyes (compared to the original) but I still enjoy it. I'm very glad that you both are. He'll get what's coming to him. Don't you worry - Hoffman gets what's coming to him. :P lol, don't worry - he'll get messed up BAD for this. This movie predates Saw by quite a bit. The book even more so, obviously. Ray Phines is terrifying in this, 100%. He did an incredible job playing this role. No where near as memorable as Hannibal was but he did a great job playing this role. Truly terrifying. Francis is very fond of her. He cares very deeply for her. You don't need to worry too much about her Simone. This scene between the two of them and the video playing onscreen is mega dark, yeah. Showing him become excited by the video all while she rubs his donger.. yeesh! Yeah, you're not too far off Simone. Hannibal's meal there looks so damn delicious! It's making my stomach growl.. it's currently 3:01am and I'm fully wanting to go and get myself a meal once this ends. Yeah, that painting is phenomenal. It's creepy for sure but it's awesome as well. :) Found love in a hopeless place? What's that George? lol, I'm in the dark on that. I'll go ahead and google that short bit after this wraps up. ((googled it and a song by Rihanna came up.. not positive that's you meant - but okie doke)) Ralph is gonna get what's coming to him. Yup, Simone's right. lol, he might be doing well but yeah, he's done. And now she is too. I love how he playfully insulted her hair! <3 hahahaha - made me smile. "Filthy little beast!" I'm not sure if the grandmother did that. hahahahaha - the level of creep is still high in this! xD Love that you're saying this is among your favorite fourth acts! It's TOTALLY up there for me as well. Ray Phines is incredible. He did such a great job playing Francis Dollarhyde. While I enjoyed this quite a bit - I still feel that Manhunter is the superior version of this. If you're curious about that one it's a movie that was released back in the 80's before Hopkin's was ever considered for the role of Lecter. That movie is VERY similar to this. I'm not sure which version is more accurate but that one is incredible. Hopkins is the superior Hannibal for sure! Brian Cox didn't really pull it off. But since this wasn't a story/movie that focuses on Hannibal it won't matter terribly much that he wasn't played by the same actor. I don't expect ya'll to react to it but I'd love for you both to watch it and mention your thoughts on it sometime later. :) The show Hannibal wasn't that great. I didn't dig on it, at least. Amazing actor, true - but the show's weak in comparison. Stoked that you both enjoyed this! Oh come on!! Hannibal's totally an anti hero! The movie may not have shown off his incredible strength or muscles but with everybody's description of him I at least felt that it was mighty imposing and intimidating. Okay - reaction's over. I had a great time watching along! Very happy that this one won the poll. :)

George, a crime scene cleanup can take up as little as several hours to a day or more, depending on the state of the scene. There are a number of companies who describe the process on their websites, so I just grabbed one at random if you want to read about it: https://directcleaninggroup.co.uk/what-is-involved-in-a-crime-scene-clean-up/ There is a movie about this topic called "Sunshine Cleaning" (2008) with Emily Blunt and Amy Adams you may want to check out. It's pretty good. I found the recasting of the "Jack Crawford" character from Scott Glenn in "The Silence of the Lambs" to Harvey Keitel here VERY distracting. Evidently Scott Glenn (he played "Stick" from the Netflix "Daredevil" series) had no desire to return to the role for personal reasons, which I completely understand, but I think the filmmakers should have just made "Crawford" into a new character. Keitel and Glenn are around the same age but look and act nothing alike and it may as well have been another character. Yes George, Lector talked "multiple Miggs" into killing himself and then he somehow swallowed his own tongue. Before that, Miggs had thrown his own ejaculate at Clarice which resulted in Lector telling her "I would not have had that happen to you. Discourtesy is unspeakably ugly to me." Emily Watson who played the blind woman Reba McClane was also one of the Russian scientists in the "Chernobyl" series, the fictional nuclear physicist "Ulana Khomyuk." Bill Duke who had the small part as the "Police Chief" in this movie was in "Commando" as "Cooke" and in "Predator" as "Sgt. Mac Eliot." Anyway, I think this movie is good, but not great. It feels a bit too much of a retread of "The Silence of the Lambs" to me. The callbacks and "homages," shall we say, to the earlier film are just a bit too heavy-handed. I thought Hopkins' performance and character in the older movie were far more interesting. Even his accent seems a bit off here, not like what he used in "...Silence..." And Buffalo Bill, his memorable tucking-in aside, Ted Levine's work there was a far, far more compelling and scary adversary than Ralph Fiennes as Francis Dolarhyde here. No shade on Fiennes at all, the character just wasn't nearly as interesting to me. To me, Emily Watson's Reba was more noteworthy. Anthony Hopkins being the dominant figure in the poster is clearly being used to get people interested in the movie. Let's be honest, Hopkins was a way bigger star than Norton or Fiennes. Again, that's not to demean their work at all, but Hopkins' "Lector" was always going to be the primary draw here for audiences. Fiennes was more lean than overly muscular, I'd say. Which is not a problem. I'm probably going to be an outlier here, but I found the design of Blake's "The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun" artwork and the tattoo that was based on it rather unappealing. To be honest, it's kind of a mess. Art being subjective and all, I find it hideous and not in a good way, so to speak. The two different dragon tattoo designs in the Swedish and American film adaptations of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" are way cooler, I think. You haven't seen Noomi Rapace's incarnation of it yet, so I'll be curious to see how you feel about that one. I'm also very much looking forward to seeing Michael Mann's "Manhunter" if we get to it here.

REDR58

The Hannibal show is great. IIRC the first episodes (or first season maybe? it's been a while) are a bit of character building and killer of the week episodes, but then it goes full into Hannibal and Will. The cinematography and the food styling are also quite beautiful and macabre. It's absolutely worth a watch.

lampofamber

Well, and Brett Ratner. He's a bit of a hack.

REDR58

The show is great. It's definitely a slow burn though with a lot of experimental and artistic shots that use plenty of slow-mo for effect.

JDV

1996 :)

E. D.

i'd like to recommend the 1996 film "Primal Fear" Edward Norton and Richard Gere share the screen on this one.

BlindPanda

I used to do that at my grandpa's house. He had a rotary phone with a lock but this trick worked to make calls... My aunt got angry when she found out...

Monica Alarcon

Y'all skipped some tasty trivia: When Lecter is given the phone, he punches the button in the cradle in a sequence, dialing area code 312, which would be for a number in downtown Chicago. This trick worked on pre-digital phones. It replicates what happens when a telephone dial is turned. When you put your finger in the hole for a specific digit, pull it round to the stop, then release it, the spring turns the dial back, creating one click for each digit as it passes. As the number 0 is the last in the sequence, it clicks ten times. Upon the arrival of touch-tone phones, wiz kids such as a young Steve Wozniak, who co-founded Apple, could build boxes to generate the tones, making phone calls for free. The phone company later changed this to prevent such things

Bill Campbell

Congratulations, Simone, on your Barrel Adventure. Just love that story. 👍

mky

I, too, am a Fannibal. Great, great, television.

mky

You can get the origin story of Hannibal in the book Hannibal Rising (2006) which was made (not as well) into a movie in 2007.

Skyruff

The Hannibal TV series with Mads Mikkelsen is exactly what you are looking for and it is some of the best network television (originally on NBC) I've ever seen. The third season gets quite "artsy" I'll say since I think they knew the show was ending, but absolutely you should put it high on your list to watch!

Joel the Human

I wonder if he was called “Arthur ‘Two barrels’ Jackson”?

REDR58

Widows' Weeds - mourning clothes worn by women.

Mark Alex Leach

Next time you can't find a burn barrel just create your own, run to the hardware store and get some sheet metal, nuts and bolts and you are good.

Ken

This movie gets dogged on a bit and I'm not sure why. My mother loved "true crime" style movies and they don't make 'em much anymore. I don't think this movie deserves awards and what-not but I really like it. Also...the TV Show Hannibal is great. I kind of think of it as if it's like the serial killer universe like the MCU for superheroes. Mads Mikkelsen is my favorite Hannibal and that's saying a lot.

RabidMango

You seem like a lovely person.

Ste Rawlings

"I have a story..." skip.

Sam

Also thank you for the funny little life story! It was heartwarming. Even if he felt like he had an extra reason to help, kudos to the two barrel guy and his kind heart!

Guillaume Huet_rennibou

Agree! The show does such a wonderful job of referencing and expanding on the characters, themes, and world, and keeping things subtle, scintillating, and horrifyingly beautiful. I hope they watch it, even if it's just on their own--I feel pretty certain they'd enjoy it since they liked Act 4 here so much.

Charlie Ito

If you want to see more about the misdirects (as George put it) and events leading up to the opening of this movie, the series "Hannibal" (not the movie) would be right up your alley.

Tenn Seven

"A Walk Among the Tombstones" is one of the most messed up criminal/horror movies I've seen. You should probably watch that next if you're going to continue with the "criminal minds" genre. It stars Liam Neeson. It is a very disturbing movie....

Allen Pass

Let's also safe this installment of cinebinge as the one where Simone says: "I like to burn stuff" and "Oh fuck, I really like eating people". I will allow George the fine Ralph joke.

Philipp Roensch

It is certainly a most disturbing story, but great film. My father was very much a fan of the Thomas Harris books and films thereof. I was just a bit too young to comprehend all that awful business when I first saw them. But after his passing, caught up and got an equally high appreciation for the films. Thank you for your very invested reaction to them as well. The craft is just impeccable, Brett Ratner made many, but this is a highlight and masterclass in tension. Dante Spinotti as DP, you might also know from Heat, LA Confidential and X-Men :D. And of course the Dani Elfmann score, wonderfully gets that concert tone and grandeur to the brutal happenings. Hannibal is by Ridley Scott, certainly his better work and worth to watch. The same name show I would have to source and catch up on myself, but happy to see it :D. Hannibal Rising you can skip, it's not good.

Philipp Roensch

"Well now I kinda want to know more about them working together" Guys I've got some Mads good news for you.

Ste Rawlings

Simone drives by the "barrels are $1000 each place" honking yelling "Hey F**KERS! Look at what I got... for FREE *Keeps honiing* To everyone here barrel shopping, don't by from this man, it's a SCAM!!!"

The scent of film and TV is all over this RUM. Smells like freaking tee ah WANNA

shout out to Anthony Hopkins my Autistic goat!

djKENTO

1000 Dollars for a barrel?! Simone has clearly been looking at barrels of Methalymine.

Ste Rawlings

The show would be a good watch and it does get into some of the cases that led to Hannibal working with Graham and the FBI. I never finished it, but I don't believe that the show ever get's to Clarice's entry into the timeline. I've always enjoyed the Will Graham character as the protagonist anyway.

Grandalf

It's also the best book in the series as well. Highly recommend it.

Grandalf

They did the same sort of surprise twist in The Silence of the Lambs with the ambulance bit, but in this movie its better. Hannibal getting away in the Silence of the Lambs doesn't really have consequences in that movie.

megamoo chilli

Red Dragon is my fav among the trilogy. I like the rhythm, the creativity in the scenario, the elements of forensic science brought in. I also prefer the side characters "design" and actor play here. And Hopkins always up there.

Guillaume Huet_rennibou

Manhunter is a must watch if you want to see a better version of this story. Michael Mann was really in his german expressionist cinema bag when he made that.

Ste Rawlings

Amazon.ca has iron burn barrels with covers for around that too, even cheaper. Maybe other places like whatever the equivalent of Home Depot in Canada is might have them?

REDR58

Simone, you can get a simple metal fire pit with a grate cover for like 50 bucks.

djKENTO

Hannibal Rising (2007) is worth watching, IMO

E. D.

Note to self, acquire metal barrels, will be useful for the apocalypse.

Ari Ramirez

George, there already is a movie telling the story of how Hannibal became the cannibal. I don't think it is as good as either Silence of the Lambs or Red Dragon. As bizarre as its story is, it does not build up and carry Hannibal's character to any satisfactory or coherent impression. It seems to me to be too preoccupied with shocking the viewer. Still, it's available: Hannibal Rising (2007)

Hans Czajkowski Jørgensen

This movie, unlike Silence of the Lambs, is the very definition of unsubtle. Even Danny Elfman's score is screaming at you about how horrific and dramatic it is. But oh my god, it's so disgustingly entertaining. Everything is painted in the broadest strokes, which is not surprising since it's a Dino De Laurentiis production. I mean, Francis Dolarhyde is almost a proto-Voldemort. 😄 I've been playing Mahjong since i was a kid, so when i first saw Red Dragon in the cinema i was tickled by the fact that i knew what the Chinese symbol carved into the tree meant before the clever movie cops. 😋

Opti_Frog

Absolutely must watch MANHUNTER. Same story, but with more grit. Directed by Michael Mann. First portrayal of Lecter as a character on film. I think it would be a great time to watch it next in the Hannibal arc.

Grandalf

"I wanted to see more Philip Seymour Hoffman" Wish granted.

Rev

The Hannibal tv show is excellent, and documents Hannibal working with the FBI. Also Red Dragon is a remake of 1986 original Manhunter. Even though I grew up in the '70s and '80s, I think this is the better movie. Just my opinion. The original is very good and by nature of it's age, is very much the style of 1980's films. Still very much worth the watch. Another great reaction and adventure of the burn barrel quest. Well done.

FischerMax98

Simone and George reacted to Silence of the Lambs in 2021: https://www.patreon.com/posts/57678445?utm_campaign=postshare_fan You should watch the movie! They have a great reaction to it.

REDR58

I've never seen Silence of the Lambs, but I love Red Dragon. I've seen it so many times and it's still thrilling every time. Everybody in this movie is great. Great reaction. 🙂

Stephanie

Simone, speaking of burn barrels, in our basement there is an old and now-disconnected from the chimney (I had to remove the flue for insurance reasons) household waste incinerator that is barrel-shaped, about 24 inches wide and 32 inches tall (60 cm x 81 cm). It is a "Majestic No. 30 Refuse Burner" and from what I can tell from the instructions on the thing, was intended for kitchen waste. It has an opening/swiveling lid on top and an ash pan/drawer at the bottom front. The plate reads: "Drain garbage, wrap loosely in paper and place in incinerator. Empty wastepaper basket accumulation daily into incinerator. When incinerator is full, light paper on top. Keep grates clean. Empty ash as needed." Not exactly encouraging composting and recycling! I had an idea to load the thing onto a hand truck and somehow wheel it up the basement steps to use out in the yard to burn woody yard waste but the damn thing is made out of iron and is HEAVY!

REDR58

The discussion prior to the start of the movie reminded me that you two NEED to watch this skit, "Barely Legal Pawn". It's only 6 minutes, but trust me, it's worth it.

Rev

I don't ever recall hearing about and certainly never keying in 555-1212 growing up in the 1980s (though I'm sure it must have been a thing back then), we always just hit the "0 (OPER)" key. The local phone books (remember those?) just listed "0" as far as I can remember.

REDR58

One of the few prequels worth watching. I was impressed how well it was done, but it might be because it was actually written before Silence of the Lambs... that and the great cast.

PIG

Hannibal is the weakest of the 3 Hopkins movies, but I'd still rewatch it with you guys. Hannibal the series is VERY highly rated.

Odd Thomas

I love the part where Simone was like "Yay, Phillip Seymore Hoffman is in this, I hope we get to see a lot of him" I was like 😬 knowing what was coming 😥😅

Mike FromOz

For the old phone question, tapping out the numbers on the switch-hook would allow you to dial a phone number, or tapping out a zero or tapping erratically would get you an operator who could place a local call for you, or tap out the area code and 555-1212 to get a operator in that area, but that was in the 80's. It was a skill.

mike moake

I disagree, but I do understand people like that version more. This feels really tight and well put together.

Mike FromOz

After the barrel story, it's definitely 'awwww' 😁

Mike FromOz

honestly its possible ive seen some episodes in the past but if i have, i have no memories of it. hell it may just be clips from tik tok and reddit i have no idea, but i dont wanna look it up to confirm it either cause if we ever do end up watching the show, i want it to be as fresh of an experience as possible 🤷‍♂️

I'm sorry but I always thought George had watched the "Hannibal" TV show, no? I remember suggesting it ages ago and I think someone here said George has already seen it? If not ... what a CRIME! It is soooooooo goooood! I think, however, that other creators have had copyright-troubles with it...

olly.enn

i need a 10 hour long podcast of just Simone tellling stories of living in the woods and trying to acquire a barrel

A great Philip Seymour Hoffman movie is Magnolia

Odd Thomas

Hannibal Rising is the story of how he became what he is. I enjoyed it, though there's no Anthony Hopkins.

Patrick Bugby

Hannibal tv show will tell you more about Lectors past. Copycat is also a good movie about serial killers. A good Phillip Seymour Hoffman film is the master.

Ya'll need to watch "Manhunter" (1986) in the *worst* way. It's the original Red Dragon. Bonus: Brian Cox as Hannibal.

Simone is a barrel of laughs.

I came as soon as I saw the notification. Please PLEASE watch the Hannibal show after this. Is SO good and underrated, is super grotesque but in a beautiful way and the cinematography is incredible.
