And what's the legality of an AI being a parent in this universe? Could be an interesting direction to explore. (And what about when there's no human parent at all? Could be interesting to see a pair of AIs try to adopt. And their subsequent problems in dealing with the more biological aspects of raising a baby.)

Yay said definitively that they could, but it was staunchly against their principles, even if it was to help Roko.

So it would seem that gender identification (or lack thereof) is something that arises as part of the mysterious process that gives AIs their distinct personalities. As we've seen with May, Roko, et al., choosing a body to express that identity is involves a bunch of factors including personal self-image, cost, and how well the material body meshes with the AI psyche.
