I came here just to say how much I enjoyed the Nermal reference.

Incorrect answer, Marten. The correct answer is "the same reason I put up with all the assholes I know."
I mean, seriously, will he ever grow a spine?

Liz runs off, until she encounters Pizza Girl, who is not at Coffee of Doom, while Penelope is working at CoD. Except later it turns out that Penelope isn't at CoD after all.

I'm wondering which way the story's gonna go from here.
Predictable would be Claire finds Liz just outside, bawling her eyes out.
Less expected, but perhaps equally likely in the real world, would be Liz not merely running out, but running off and getting lost in the unfamiliar city. That has a lot of potential, including the possibility of Faye being the one who finds her and the two of them not only reconcile, but becomes friends.
Of course, there's also every likelihood that after the year-end return of Bembo we spend some time catching up with Rocko and Yay; Clinton and Elliot; Renee, Brun, and Dan (remember Dan?), or any number of other characters. (I'm holding out for Penelope getting frustrated about Dora forgetting she even has a manager, quitting, and running into Pizza Girl on her way out.)

You think Tim Horton's owners are sane?

I’ll say this about this plot. If Elizabeth is a representative for Cubetown, think of all the people living and working in Cubetown who may have a lot of similar dysfunctions and generally acting in ways very outside of social norms. There’s a reason why Station said Cubetown needs Claire’s help. Marten & Claire are getting a sense of how much work they will need to do in their own ways (Claire as essentially second in command; Marten being the most sane coffeehouse owner this side of a Tim Horton’s). This is letting us know how much work they will have in front of them.
