There's an important difference between giving praise when it's earned and giving praise when it's demanded. If you give praise for something they didn't even do, you're not helping. In this case, the praise she wants was *not* earned, but it *was* demanded. A better response would have been "I'll compromise. You get credit for making a good decision, even though you *were* stubborn about it."

If someone has difficulty with making good choices, then you need to validate and slap on the praises when they do make good choices so that it's affirming and will motivate them to do so again. If you downplay the significance of them going out of their comfort zone, then that will not help them feel empowered or rewarded enough to continue doing so.

I dunno - I feel like I'm out of step with consensus again. Most of this thread is supporting what Dale's doing but to me it's just enabling ongoing bad patterns that MarBear has. I'm not for a second saying he should have called her out in the way that May did but going along with demands for affirmation really isn't going to help Marigold in the long run. Obviously there isn't an easy answer but if I'd been in Dale's shoes I probably would have just gone with "Okay".
