Yogi's Choice

I'd really like to think it's most. They're supposed to. But I've encountered far too many who don't take the time. Maybe they actually do know how, but if they're not helping their students like this, them knowing how isn't very useful. Online reviews can be helpful. When I went to see if there was somewhere to complain about the yoga instructors I had issues with, there were already so many complaints I realized the real problem was I didn't check first. So, I guess it all comes down to a choice: Do your homework, get a decent instructor. Don't do your homework, roll the dice.

One of the healthiest things I learned from yoga was to make the pose work for you, not to make yourself work for the pose. When you know where you're supposed to feel the pose working and you start feeling it way earlier, using supports is actually very good and makes the pose work for you so you get the benefit. I'm really hoping that's the style of yoga Hanners is going to go for. Also there might not be many other people there - a class with more one-on-one with the instructor is great for people who are coming out of a long period of inactivity, so you don't really see other people doing a pose so much as you're coached into what you should be feeling.

IRL, it's really helpful to start a new exercise regimen with a friend to help you stay motivated. I can see where "Hanners" might be a bit intimidating, but she's usually very positive (unless it's dealing with her mom)

Marigold is stepping outside her comfort zone. See what she was able to do without direction. With some gentle mentoring she just might have her own space station one day!

There's nothing worse than the "it's so easy, you do it like this! *flawless execution!*" style of supportive lol, but I don't think that's Hanners. Marigold seems to have a pretty healthy level of hesitation, but seems to be cautiously optimistic.

Before class, I'm looking around the room comparing my pre-stretching flexibility to other people's. During class, exactly the same, too focused on what I'm doing and what the teacher is doing to notice what anyone else is doing. But afterwards, I always felt so refreshed that I didn't really notice what state anyone else was in.

I always disliked the moments before yoga class started and the minutes after it, when it seemed like I was the only one who was sweaty and out of breath. In between tho, I was so focused on doing the poses, the rest of the world didn't exist. I hope it's the same for Marigold. That she can get into it once she's started.

I've learned not to be overly cheerful about solving other people's problems because it tends to push them away and not actually help. Marigold does seem a bit put-off here, although she also seems like she's been sold on this yoga idea and she has enough trust with Hannelore that it'll probably work out. I guess we'll see.

Most yoga teachers know how to adjust every pose to what you can do. The goal is to try, not be perfect. I definitely understand though, I'm normally in Marigold's position.

I have never once wobbled at a yoga class. You already know my punch line, of course: never took one. I do stretches recommended by a physical therapist. They work for me.
