Counter theory: Pintsize has been having feels for a long time now that most of the fans have been missing. I'm not saying that you're wrong, but I always had the sense that Pintsize's avoidance of getting upgraded before was more of curmudgeon-style avoidance. To be clear, I am 100% for allowing people to not partake in things they're not ready for, regardless of how much it feels like they really want to. But it did feel to me like he had some feelings about being left behind but was too anxious to go along with everyone.

Always has. Plays "shallow and one-dimensional" well, but there was always a deep and complex mind behind it. Pintsize took the Companion job very seriously; just look at how much Marten has grown, with Pintsize by his side (or in his freezer) the whole time. I've always appreciated the occasional glimpses Jeph has given us of the sensitive person behind Pintsize's asshole surface.

I can literally feel how being in the new body is allowing Pintsize to process and feel in a way he never expected. The subtle changes in how he talks, what he says, and how he behaves. I could tell there was a difference, even before I could put my finger on it. I only briefly wondered if I was reading to much into it, but now it's all there, right in the panels.
