Semiotics

Hmph,... so there is a time limit on posts,.. or on retention of unposted scribbles,... nice to know.

Darnel D Cooper

You have to wonder: I see Clinton and his hand,... how far in this world does this go? I have seen no wheelchairs, no walkers, no canes, this tells me that if you have a working brain you can be augmented to move freely. I'm just curious,.....

Darnel D Cooper

AI culture may evolve a lot faster in this post-singularity world. Remember that Momo was less than 3 years old when she got her chassis upgrade, and human-like bodies have gone from virtually non-existant to really commonplace in the few years of in-world time that has passed since the comic started.

Peter Jensen

Waaay back. I believe it was fireworks related.

Jim Feldman

That seems to have gone well. No blood was spilled and Willow's head is intact.

OldGoat

I think it's time Clinton got an upgrade. With AI's changing hair and skin color in the more modern bodies on a whim, Clinton needs the option to do the same with his hand. Which reminds me: Are they ever going to explain why he has a mech hand?

Darnel D Cooper

I thought so,...

Darnel D Cooper

Maybe if they both wore Barrettes?

Andrew

It might attract the interest of Yay Newfriend though?

Andrew

I feel like the AIs would need to be meaningfully separated from human culture for that to happen. What seems more likely is that some portion of AIs will remain in the shared human and AI culture while others, most likely the disembodied ones, will form a separate one, if they haven't done so already.

Andrew L Butula

Do Willow and Faye look kind of similar?

Laurie Voss

Once the art (or anything else) is outside the artist's head and able to be seen by others...that cat's out of the bag. That's the beauty of consciousness. Whether Sam or Faye thinks there is deeper meaning has no bearing on whether there is deeper meaning...because meaning doesn't belong to the creator alone, but to everyone who interacts with the work, and it will change with time!

Having recently re-read all of QC recently I'd say that Faye does art, but its done her way and on her terms, much like everything throughout her life.

What we see here is kinda like the difference between art majors and art history majors. The art majors just DO it, while art history majors TALK about it. Dated both, very different mind sets.

Ted Van Roekel

In the comments section of this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYJBpmS1qrY , there's a thread which starts "Rose 10 months ago When Doc Ock was revealed.. My first reaction was "Oh shit. That's cool." And my wife went "Oh no, she's hot." " and an annoying twat responds "She's not the sliightest bit hot and Doc Ock is a man. Liberals have to ruin everything cool." The relevance is that they (probably he) later spits the dummy by saying "I dont give a damn about your disney utopia. I grew up watching Spiderman and he fought Doc Ock who was a dude. You can talk about fake alternate universe whatever I dont give a shit. Yall are a bunch of nerds." I just thought it was hilarious that someone commenting on a promotional video for an animated superhero movie thought that 'nerd' was a damning insult.

Mark

Robot Repair and Coffee House.

Ted Van Roekel

Faye is my hero.

Chris Warren

Cultural Appropriation is a myth. By insisting that no one shares in your culture is the fastest way to see said culture die. The only way for a culture to survive is to spread it to anyone who is willing to learn and take part.

Phill Green

You know, as someone who actually does art...Faye really doesn't seem to do art.

Chris Crowther

Skullmaster, Master of Skulls!

Jason Zions

No, no, Faye. What you do is put up some chairs and install a soda machine and charge them through the noose to hang out and discuss ai philosophy. That's where the money is

Bagge

Yup, that was every semiotics major I ever met from Brown.

ducksauz

If a human getting a “spray” would be “culturally appropriative”, aren’t sprays themselves cultural appropriation since they’re AI’s trying to emulate humans getting tattoos? And I’m fine with Faye bringing it up, but at the same time, 3 panels later *she’s* the one saying that they’re “ain’t no deeper meaning to it”. It kind of comes across as Faye going, “Hey, this is a serious thing.”, yet in almost the same breath saying, “Why would we treat this as a serious thing?”

Brian Bailie

Faye in the last panel is me on a daily basis, lately.

Anthony Gaglianese

if you get to wield a sledge hammer and a welder's torch, it ain't nerdy. It's more like "Rosie The Riveter"

David Hernandez

i dunno if the woman who *fixes robots for a living* is allowed to call someone else a nerd

LH

And they have not found the answer they were searching for...

Milo

This might be my favorite strip subtitle yet. (Or whatever we call those things.) "Ah but isn't it true that the shared meaning the artist, the wearer, and the art viewer take from it, through the nature of signs and their expressive power, is something more than my opinion? Man." - Roland Barthes

Clifton Royston

Well. That's my antimatter theory shot to hell. Or do they actually need to make contact? Hmmm...

BobC

And Faye didn't even answer his question...

That spray really tied the robot together.

Hugh Eckert

Does Clinton work in theory? I thought he was more about human/AI relations, which wouldn't lend itself to dehumanizing (or whatever word would get used in the context of a world with two sentient species) AIs the same way Evie did with Bubbles.

Andrew L Butula

This is an interesting thought. Humans created A.Is and the culture was the same for a time I'm sure, but as time went on it must have changed as all things do. At what point would their culture be so different that we wouldnt be considered a part of it or them a part of ours?

I am the captian now

me 2

I'm just remembering what happened last time Bubbles encountered a human who works in AI theory. I think Clinton might have to confront some stuff about his worldview soon.

Seth Aaron Hershman has they she pronouns

It's not *useful*. Interpretations are fine and all, but artists have to eat, they do the stuff to get paid, not for the discussions.

SpookyPenguin

This interaction has strongly increased my affection for Clinton.

Alcaria Swain

Hahahahahahah!!

Shawn K. Younkin

why would it be cultural appropriation if this was a trend started by sam a couple months/ yrs ago?

chapoluvr420

Faye: I though they were here for business, but they’re actually here study robot society and philosophise... Yeah, I’m not getting paid for this.

Thisguy

... Or is at this point I realize how much like Clinton I actually am 😳😑

GodsInTheCogs

I think panel-one Willow is contemplating how similar she and Faye look.

Richard

Simulacra and Simulation and SKULLMASTER

Alex Kosnett

Whoa.

Alacrity Fitzhugh

It's only culturally appropriative if done without properly understanding, acknowledging, and respecting the deeper meaning of it. And if there ain't any deeper meaning to it, no problem.

Rich Holmes

He just wants to discuss the deeper meaning with the artist. Which will be frickin skulls and snakes, man!

Devin Gates

You would think Faye being an artist she would try offering sprays or other cosmetic mods as well. Maybe not sprays, she wouldn't try to take business from Sam/Skull Lord

Michael

Clinton tries intellectual over-analysis! It is super effective! (At getting 2nd scary lady away from newfriend.)

Captain Button

Plus:NERDS!

Michael Boettger

“That rug really tied the room together man” Jean Bruwhatisisname

doorbender

That went well. I wonder what Clinton wants from Sam, and I’m wondering if Clinton might have ADD.

Andrea Andrew

So...her answer is: I don't know, and I don't really care?

Michael Boettger

I also think there’s a lot to not wanting to see just bare walls or skin and they want something more complex. It would explain tattoos as much as graffiti.
