Depending on the circumstances, he could have just said, "Um, well, you know those two songs I wrote about you? ... I donated the proceeds from them. Plus $5. So, in effect, I donated $5, the rest was you."
Just to be clear, I only think that would have been appropriate if either it was true, or it worked out that way. (That is, the songs had since made the money in question.) Making that claim without it being true would've been unrecoverable later on.

May did specifically ask him, and communication is important in a relationship, so him initially being discreet with his contributed amount has no bearing on what he should have done in this instance. Nor would it have been appropriate for him to bring up how filthy rich he is getting from his songs. Any other character could bring it up, however…

Yeah, My Dad quit when I was about three (1969) because I had athsma and the Doctor told my folks that living in a smoking household would kill me.
He confided in me just before he passed away (2018, Parkinson's) that he still got a crave from time to time. Usually when he was stressed.

In good C&W tradition jailkid May is a well of inspiration for awful songwriter Sven. Their artistic collaboration will provide constant opportunities for more banging. Sooner or later they'll realize, "It's not just the fucking, I want to fuck him/her."

Hanners has undergone the very opposite of Flanderization. I might give you the 4th wall bit save that Jeph acknowledged the abrupt change in her character a long time ago.

My mom talked about craving cigarettes 50+ years after she quit. Nicotine (and I believe the ritual of smoking a cigarette) are serious business. She never followed through on her desires for a cig but for sure it came to her every so often.

The morning of Wednesday November 9th 2016, I happened to see one of those billboard trucks advertising cigarettes, and WHAM, after 20 years quit, I wanted a cigarette so badly. All my defenses were down, and I was just hurting.
I only stopped having random cravings when I had probable-Covid last spring. It’s amazing how not being able to draw breath can reprogram your brain really fast.

Wow, Sven, just creating problems wherever he goes. Everyone here just needs to chill out and see if things are actually as weird as they're saying they are.
Of course, having been as neurotic in the past as most of the cast is, I know that's not going to happen.

I think Sven’s redemption arc will be complete when he stops being dumb. March him right back to May, and tell her it’s not weird unless they give the money more weight than helping a friend in need. I swear to god, if one overcomplication is gonna create an unscalable wall between them and getting over the last vestige of their imperfect pasts, I’m gonna lose it.

So Paul Erdos, the great mathematician, was rather infamously a serious speed addict. One of his friends (I can't remember who, but I heard the story directly from them, this is firsthand) once bet him $100 (then a sizeable sum) that he couldn't go a month without. He took the bet, and indeed didn't touch speed for a whole month - nor did he get any mathematics done. He then collected the $100, used it to buy a shitton of drugs, and proceeded to crank out a bunch of important papers.
I don't know if there's actually a moral to this story. Maybe it's more of an "immoral."

I love the strip, and I really hate being that kind of guy, but considering that Sven had already discussed this issue with Hannelore, isn't he being a bit unnecessarily vague? https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=4314

When I was in university I drank coffee non-stop from waking to sleeping. I would make a percolator pot, drink it till it was empty, rinse and repeat.
One Sunday morning as I was filling it with water, my dad came in, saw me, and said, "You're addicted to coffee."
"...Yeah?" I said.
"I want you to see if you can go a whole week without drinking any coffee."
"OK, I can do that," I replied, and poured out the water.
At lunchtime on Monday I was in the lab trying to solder my project. Soldering takes four hands even when you can see.
I couldn't see. I was also shaking, my head felt like someone had rammed a railway rail all the way through it, and according to my friend I was bloodlessly white (and I normally make Snow White look like Chef from South Park).
"Are ... are you alright?" she asked me.
"No... I don't think I am."
I went downstairs and bought a Coke from the machine and got in my car to drive home. The way I felt, I would probably have been a safer driver after 6 beers than I was just then.
Home in half an hour or so, drank 2 coffees straight, had four paracetomol + codeine tablets (recommended dose: two) and went to bed.
And that was my week without coffee.
