I've met people who can do that to various people as well. If one does it to a group of people who have been the target of othering stemming from or disgust or hate, it tends to not go well. Probably to nobody's surprise.

Around the time she got her new body, she questioned why she had and wanted a kitchen that she knew she'd never use. I wonder if there are fragments of human "code" in the AI's that draw some to various human mannerisms and traits. Even Bub's internalized "Squee" moment when she thought about Clinton and Eliot seems a too "human" response.

2020-10-21 15:41:49 +0000 UTCOne of the realistic aspects of this strip that I really appreciate is the way in which characters can "other" people inappropriately without any ill will at all. Clinton's overexcitement about AI's, and Faye's SIL's academic objectivity, don't come from any kind of disgust or hate, but they can still make AI people seem like things to be admired or studied, rather than people to be respected.

I'll use a specific pronoun if I'm intimately acquainted with someone, but most of the time I just use "they". And once in a while, it actually works out well. Not long ago, I met someone who appeared and acted female in every possible way, but I happened to overhear them mention to one of their coworkers that they were non-binary, and they preferred to use "they", which I had been using for them all along.
