I think she's just been beat down so many times now that she expects things to go badly. This is a legit personality trait... I was just talking with someone recently who basically thinks "my best attribute is that I don't ask for anything...." I feel like May's in that camp - she's been humiliated enough times that she's waiting for the inevitable rejection and letdown.
