If I encounter one too close or inside the chicken house (they eat chickens when they can), I usually shoo it along with a shovel. If it plays dead, I pick it up with the shovel and set it over the fence so the dogs can't hurt it. All nice and sensible...but I still want to pet one.

When I was a kid, a mama possum had gone under a gate and her litter (which was clinging to her back) was left behind. We ended up raising about a dozen baby possums before releasing them back to the wild. Although I've seen stories and videos of hand-raised possums being warm and affectionate, those little guys and gals never did anything but stomp and hiss at us. So my rule has been to give them plenty of room whenever I run into one (which is a lot on a farm), and I think that's kept both sides happy.

Opossums in particular are unfriendly and not shy about letting you know. The "play possum" concept only works to about arms distance. Then comes the display of large sharp teeth and the hackle-raising hisses that let you know it's all about to go very bad for you. Those proceeding without thick gloves and recent rabies vaccinations do so at their own peril.

Long ago I was in Melbourne, Australia, having a pleasant dinner outdoors with friends when a 'possum dropped in for dinner. Literally fell out of the tree shading the table. Never before saw six people levitate simultaneously. Never before saw a 'possum wanting so badly to be anywhere else. He left without staying for dinner, empty-handed. We became excessively silly after that. Made the evening, day, and entire trip.

Reminds me of my teenaged years, got home late one evening, parked in the driveway, walked through the garage with the lights off, as I'm unlocking the door to the utility room to enter the house, I hear the cats eating at the food bowl, and reach down. Pet kitty, pet kitty, pet kitty, pet kitty . . . . wait, that is one too many kitty . . . turn on lights and Kitty, kitty, opossum, kitty. I looked down at him, he looked up at me and kind of grinned, the cats indicated that they were cool with him, so I went on with my business.
