I don't know why I find gift baskets so funny, but I do

Just because someone is mature in one element of their life, that doesn't carry through to everything. Dora had some serious baggage when she was with Martin. Time and therapy and being with someone who's a better fit have all been good for her. And while Claire is inexperienced in dating, that doesn't mean she can't be insightful.

Krista Elliott

One giant tub of a single flavor or a giant tub divided into 3 or 4 flavors of popcorn?

Miyaa

Pretty sure they just don't like seeing a woman - especially a feminine woman - telling a man what to do.

Diptych

All y'all who are hating Claire have obviously never been in the same situation as either her or Marten. She could see – as anyone should – that he was only fooling himself because he's not comfortable making any big changes in his life, probably because the last time he did it (following a girl across the country), it didn't end well. He needed a push, and she knew how to give him one without making him resent her for it. She's good for him. If you don't like it, that's fine, because you're not the one dating her.

awgiedawgie

And to be honest - this is why he and DORA didn't work. No shade on Dora - she is perfect for someone else. It just wasn't Martin.

Kerin Schiesser

AWWWW.... don't hate Claire. Here's the thing... this is MARTIN'S doing. However unlikely it is, Claire just has a certain kind of attitudes and habits VERY closely aligned with her family and how she was raised. Martin, who had - you have to admit - a certain non-mainstream element to his childhood and early adulthood due to his parents' journeys in life - craves this mainstream view of family life. He CHOSE this. He recognized something in Claire that he needed, as she did in him. They work, because they chose each other, and it's working. Claire isn't magically perfect - a lot of the things she does or says or believes would be EXACTLY WRONG for a lot of boyfriends. But they ARE perfect for Martin. So they work.

Kerin Schiesser

claire is so unrealistic she is unlikeable. Someone who has never been in a relationship can give perfect advice and inspire someone like never before? Meanwhile, Dora, the mature real adult with a business who wasn't living with her mom was constantly written to have stupid immature fights with martin. It's probably more of a statement about how Jeph has matured than his characters, but jesus do I hate claire

I was thinking a tub of popcorn.

Is anybody else suddenly getting Harry & David and Hickory Farms ads in their facebook feeds?

Michael Schmidt

Harry & David >> Hickory Farms

Joe

to be fair, they have been together for a while, so it would be pretty normal to get that personal. also as you see both Dora and Steve pretty much both think its ''about damn time'' but a friend normally cant step in the way Claire did, she can only do that because of who she is to Marten and who he is to her, i think it makes perfect sense.

Kattandra

This has been bugging me ever since this arc started. Claire was doing more than "giving him a little push". She flat-out invalidated his emotions. He said he was "happy", she *corrected* him and told him he was "Content". That is pretty much telling somebody else what they feel, which is an absolute fucking DICK move. If I were Marten I would have been pissed as hell. ESPECIALLY at Claire, who of all people should know better. I'm sure she had her share of that while she was dealing with her issues.

Churchill (formerly TeaBear)

A bouquet of dildos.

Made with the finest Washington state Sasquatch?

Miyaa

Now I actually want to see a strip of Claire receiving that gift basket.

Daniel Rydberg

The resemblance between the two was occasionally remarked upon in the early days. My Google-fu isn't strong enough to come up with a reference, though.

Mark

Now I'm wondering what kind of gift basket Veronica would send.

Dean Reilly

Chewie gets two... I see it 0_0

Dancing on the Edge of Sanity

Gift baskets are fine. Just don't send an edible arrangement. I'm not going to eat the whole thing before it goes bad. You might as well throw money away.

drone r0m-3

Cut her hair and Dora could be a Marten clone. Im suspicious of Hanners at this point.

Bagge

I haven't had a kind word to say about Hickory Farms since they dropped their Beef Stick in favor of a disgusting "Beef Summer Sausage."

Joseph Bonnar

For three years I was buying Made in Washington gift baskets for the Christmas gift exchange. I powered up to The Sasquatch Lunch Box last year.

Tudza

Hickory Farms also supports my cardiologist.

BobC

Deck the halls with boughs of Swiss Colony!

Jason Rock

But how does Steve know Claire likes fruit?

Bagge

Butts on Boats

Michael Johnson

So smiles!

The boats disease is spreading!

Giant Speck

God I'm so glad this arc ended this way and not with some huge fight of Marten getting angry at Claire for encouraging him

Paz Eliastra

Now just imagine the end of Star Wars. They get gift baskets instead of medals.. except for Chewie.

Damian Paradis

To our favorite skinny librarian.

Carl Fink

Best post text ever.

Whoa, Dora got engaged? I need to pay more attention.

Forrest Taylor

my first thought was "what do they put in Claire's basket" but it sounded WAY too much like something Pintsize would say...

Peter McDevitt

Hope she likes summer sausage and cheese.

Michael Boettger

Pepperidge Farms will remember that.

I love Marten’s lil affectionate side-eye in the last panel

Danya Michael

Pepperidge Farms makes the worst gift baskets.

Miyaa

I just got 2 hickory farm baskets, this is coincidental witchcraft

Kyle Major

Clearly Jeph is in the pocket of Big Wicker smdh

Adam Friedlander

Gift baskets are hilarious, Jeph. This is fact.

EnterTheHero

Claire will be up to her tuchis in pears, apples and walnuts.

Michael Boettger

To be honest, Claire would probably love a gift basket.

Denizen Blue

Next comic: Claire wakes up to half a dozen different gift-baskets piled at her door. She is confused, but delighted.

Samantha Yeaman

i finally have an example of positive synergy

Hope

Smörgåsbord! Good word!
