He Was A Good Man

Comments

There ain’t no Fucksburg Montana! I looked it up. There is a Ficksburg South Africa, but that’s not the same.

Philip D Jones

I don't know if a close-up profile is *new* but it is certainly unusual; I like it.

When I was a traveling consultant I found a real place called Toadsuck, Arkansas. I don’t think there is a library there.

Philip D Jones

I think that Claire is being eased off-stage. The previous strip presents her as having rather tepid, restrained passions, and in this one, both of them are remarkably casual about the thought of her leaving. I think maybe Jeph wants to get out from under having a character to whom he is determined to do justice, but whose situation he may not wholly understand. I could be wrong. Telling the future from comic strips is not yet a science. Maybe Claire will get work in the Knowledge Corridor. (The Knowledge Corridor runs between the Inchoate Fantasy Room and the Abstraction Archives, with Nightmare Alley branching off of it. No, that is a lie. It is the college-heavy area around Northampton.) Maybe they will wind up living together in Joggins, Nova Scotia. I am wrong about half the time. This could be one of those times. It looks to me like she is being de-accessioned, as all librarians eventually are, though.

Any conversation that doesn't end with Marten being hit with Ursula is a good conversation :-)

Bagge

14, Fisher Cat, 18k and you'd have VT.

jeff fearnow

Also if you were ever a L'il Abner fan.

Jeffrey Nonken

Don't move to Montana. It's way too crowded and snows 13 months out of the year. The leading cause of death is Grizzly Bear, at a rate of 28,000/year. Amazon Prime thinks you're in Canada. The mosquitoes are worse than in Florida, and it's not really legal to own a vehicle that gets better than 10 mpg.

Lightsabr2

Dude, F-burg is a major city. The postcard industry alone is massive.

KCkittysnores

my favorite double-take "What the..." town name i've ever seen on a road sign is Kickapoo (TX). am i aware that it's the name of a Native American/indiginous Mexican tribe? yes. is it FUCKING HILARIOUS when you think of it in english-speaking terms? also yes.

Satan

People who are desperate for a new job (like recent graduates) may think that they're ok with moving to Fucksburg, Montana until they get that job offer. Or they may be good with the move if the salary will be $X, but when they get the offer it's $X-$1000. They get to decide if that salary is good enough.

Nancie

Or Shorter, Alabama

Nicki Faulk

If you aren't OK with moving to Fucksburg, Montana then don't apply to jobs in Fucksburg, Montana. If you let someone get to the point of giving you an offer and you're like, "No, I don't think I want to move", you have seriously jerked their chain, wasted their time and have demonstrated yourself to be a flake of a human being. Willingness to move is kind of the ante for applying in the first place.

Jason Doege

Had to talk about Ronald Fuchs repeatedly in grad school because of his seminal work: https://journals.aps.org/pr/abstract/10.1103/PhysRev.140.A2076 "Optical Modes of Vibration in an Ionic Crystal Slab"

Dave

The people of Fucksburg should feel lucky- the town could have been named after Jonas' mother!

Dean Reilly

If she is prepared to move abroad, she might get a job in Fucking, Austria.

mano

Vhat's zo funny about a good German name? ;-)

mano

I'd rather be a mental toss flycoon. :-)

Jason Zions

Otto Fuchs was a character in some literary thing I read in 7th grade. We all had fun with that one.

Kuragari

There is a small village not 5 miles away from me called Cocking.

Thomas Boys

He was a good man. He gave fuchs about others.

Thomas Boys

Life is like a hurricane in fucksburg

Michael Lazare

Every time they write out their address.

awgiedawgie

Better than Bland (Missouri), Boring (Oregon) or Dull (Ohio).

Mark

Movin' to Montana soon Gonna be a Dental Floss tycoon

ysth

Eh, could be worse ... Could be Mensträsk, Sweden. (direct translation: Menstruation Swamp)

Andreas "Rowas" Lind-Sahlin

She's obviously given it some thought ahead of time. Her part of the conversation sounds way too well rehearsed to be off the cuff. It may have even contributed to the nervousness she attributed to the exam.

awgiedawgie

The UK has positions in Westward Ho, Hutton-Le-Hole, Sadberg and Dingle.

Andrew Tate

Claire is more mentally prepared for a relationship swaying conversation than she is for final exams. Same.

Dylan T

Heh, I'll bet you ANYTHING that Claire already had this conversation planed, and in panel 2 she referenced that particular index card in her brain. "Oh, it's time for THIS scenario now. Let's talk." She's that kind of person.

Bagge

Oddly when they asked for nominations for mayor once the town was established, there were, in fact, zero Fuchs given.

Chris Gallaty

Funny enough, I live in Fucksburg, Montana. Okay, so maybe just a rural Montana town. But if ever a place SHOULD be called Fucksburg, this is it. It'd be better with a cool librarian though.

I am saved from many ill-advised domain purchases by those that have squatted before me.

Chuck Dee

you got there first ;)

Sleepy John

She'll probably get an offer in Intercourse, PA. (Yes, it exists.)

kaitou

The side view panel is my favorite ever

A little skeptical, are we? Marten is the inaugural character. If anyone would remain a main character after leaving town, it's him. We've already seen a prolonged diversion without him in it, while the story focused on more riveting news, but the story always comes back around to him.

awgiedawgie

The less said about the origins of Ramsbottom, WV the better.

Miyaa

Pintsize would be totally into moving there. Maybe May also.

Captain Button

Schitt's Creek

drone r0m-3

no way would we follow martin and claire; we would occasionally have them cameo in the comic that would become about faye bubbles marigold and co. same as hannelore now is. Dora and tai may also be moving on. I think jeph is more interested in the stories some of his newer characters still have to tell. if alice grove taught me anything its that hes more attached to the story arc then the characters and isnt above ending things if it fits his vision.

Andje Lewkowicz-Lalonde

Marten is the main character only by default, QC is more of an ensemble piece.

They really seem to be much better at communicating than Marten's previous relationships. Last time they needed a helpful nudge from Pintsize but I feel like they're also just more in sync with eachother than Marten has been with previous girlfriends. Don't feel like Marten himself has changed that much.

Mitchell Sealy

So far that went about as well as any of Marten and Claire's important discussions.

This comic took place in the author's hometown originally, right? And then a few years ago the author moved to Canada? Wonder if this could be used as an excuse to start writing about his new surroundings. Marten and Claire move off to the author's new city and the story follows them.

Mitchell Sealy

Are the residents required by law to give one?

Captain Button

"Fucktopia?" "Fuchtopia." "Spell it."

Populuxe

I looked to see if there was one of those new novelty TLDs for Montana. There wasn't, or I would have made an ill-advised domain purchase.

Adam Friedlander

I despise small towns but I would absolutely live in Fucksburg for the meme

Cody Renton

Well, that went well.

BobC

This whole thing is getting way too relatable.

Jackson Bockus

if she gets a permanent position at smif
