I recently reread the whole story and keep returning to the secont to last panel in this strip.
Somebody should have better listened to Renee.

buddy of mine was on vacation last month in St. Lucia at Sandals (during the govt shutdown - he's a govt worker - insert your joke here). his wife had a bat try to use her to climb out of the pool she had her feet in. docs insisted on the full rabies series (which is annoying, but apparently no longer features the dreaded stomach injections).

I'm confused by this assertion that cave-living has a lack of merits. I mean, Clinton mentions a few, but they assume an old-fashioned "natural" cave. The cave under my bed, for example, has none of those things. Unfortunately, it also doesn't have enough room for me to live there. The cats living in my apartment seem to be fans of it, though - especially when the day star is irradiating all of the lands visible through the windows of my apartment.

Are you sure she didn't start packing the harpoon in those days? I mean, assuming she went to school before metal detectors were common - which seems like a likely scenario, since as far as I can remember, she hasn't had a birthday since being introduced years ago - it seems like a perfectly natural way to ward off bullies.

Not to put too fine a point on it, make a little bat house in your soul! While you're at it, leave the night light on inside the bat house in your soul!

Build a bat house! Just like birdhouses, often you can build houses for bats! Depending on your area and the species of bat! Do your research!

We moved into a new house in a new neighborhood. The first summer we were plagued by gnats and mosquitoes. Then the bats showed up. We seldom saw them. They would flutter around at dusk. Soon no more mosquitoes or gnats. Bats and spiders are your friends.
Another lesson learned: if you are plagued with insects, don’t go spraying a lot of poison around. Be patient. What bothers you is a feast for other creatures.

We think my cat Zonker died of, essentially, a bat bite. It got in somehow; we think he caught it and brought it inside. Not long after he started just lying around and doing nothing; he seemed happy enough, but wouldn't eat.
He wouldn't even eat BACON. Zonker LOVED bacon.
To be fair, his immune system was compromised with FeLV.
Come to find out that bats, like city-dwelling humans, harbor an enormous number of viruses. They live all crowded together in closed spaces. They live under insanitary conditions, seeing that if you live on a high ceiling, it is convenient to poop on the floor. They are immune, or relatively immune, to most of the viruses they carry. Not all the viruses they carry cause disease in humans, but because there are so many of them and viruses mutate often, bat petting is best avoided.

Guys we’ve missed the important thing: we need to see what Brun looked like in high school! Admittedly, it would be much like her now but with trapper keeper instead of a harpoon.

Histoplasmosis would probably be more of a problem if one was living in a cave with bats, and in Australia there is also Hendra virus-

From the CDC, 1-2 cases of rabies per year in the US, many more receive the vaccination against rabies after exposure and never develop symptoms (whether or not they were actually exposed).
You are vastly more likely to die of a mosquito borne disease from a mosquito a bat didn't eat.
Lovely to be out on a buggy summer evening at dusk and enjoy the arrival of the bats and the quick disappearance of all the bugs.

I hear bats can bite you in your sleep without waking you up, and give you rabies, so you wouldn't even know to get yourself treated. It would apparently be incredibly unsafe to live as Bruce Wayne does, with his house joined to a cave system heavily populated with wild bats.

Bats are so coool. I’d highly recommend the book Dark Banquet by Bill Schutt. It’s about sanguivores - blood-feeding creatures! Super neat. Particularly the part about vampire bats! (Like that of the more than 1500 species of bat worldwide, only 3 are vampires!)

When I was younger it always bugged me when other kids would throw rocks at bats roosting in the daytime. They're just little fuzzy friends and want to be left alone...
