Stereotypography

Comments

That and queue have four vowels in a row. Any others? Five?

Matt Grayson

Highbrarians.

Gary Walker

Plinth. Flange. Onomatopoeia.

Danny Beans

My favourite word is "snood".

Philippa

is stereotypography anything like Stereotomy??

Joe

I typed 'flo' into Google and 'flong' was literally the third thing offered. I'm guessing Google knows I read QC, and saw a bunch of other QC readers asking the same thing.

Elf Sternberg

All you people who don't share my personal preference for which is the best word are wrong and can kiss my ass. My personally-preferred word is better than yours. And that's final.

Trigon Manthree

Aha, how could I forget that! Thanks :)

Andrew

Library nerds and etymology. So much fun.

Kuragari

Prang. It's a car wreck in England. Also I'm quite fond of one of the words in Japanese for snake. Most say Hebi but an older way is Kuchinawa, which means rope with a mouth.

Myron A Barber

Nematode. Come at me , bro.

jeff fearnow

I am partial to "gudgeon," the socket parts of a hinge, particularly because the piece that goes through the gudgeons, holding the hinge together, is the pintle, which means penis. It just figures that is what a bunch of carpenters would call it.

"<a href="https://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=3173" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">They keep the flensing tools in a special flensing cabinet</a>"

Peter Jensen

nope, definitely supercilious

JD

Cellar door

Matthew Harris

I always liked 'flensing knife'. Without looking it up you can pretty much guess it has a very specific (and graphic) purpose.

Andrew

I hear they're implementing a custom captcha - single question: "how many unicorns are there in the room?" Any non-zero answer and it blocks you for a day :)

Andrew

It also makes decent rhymes with 'land down under' :)

The best word is 'chunder'. It's Australian though, so you need to pronounce it non-rhotically to get the full effect.

Dean Reilly

Jeph, you're basically just planning strip after strip of a stoned Claire and Tai being random, aren't you? Is Tai's hand just coincidentally behind Claire's head or is she trying to keep her on the couch by way of grabbing the back of her vest?

Ben Russell-Gough

A good buzz converts any furniture covering into a superfluid. Or maybe it does that to the one intoxicated. I'm not sure. More experimentation required!

BobC

Flong is pretty decent, but the best-sounding english word is actually syphilis.

AcheronYYC

NO JSTORING WHILE HIGH!

Bagge

Claire appears to have reached the Oozing-Out-of-Your-Chair phase of being stoned....

Churchill (formerly TeaBear)

She's actually melting and doesn't know it yet

darklion

Spatchcock -- to cut open a chicken in a method similar to butterflying, to flatten it out for grilling.

Megan Lane

The best word in Mandarin is probably "shi" <a href="https://theslittyeye.wordpress.com/2011/11/27/only-in-chinese-shi-shi-shi-shi-sh%C7%90/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://theslittyeye.wordpress.com/2011/11/27/only-in-chinese-shi-shi-shi-shi-sh%C7%90/</a>

Marlo Delfin Gonzales

With respect, I must disagree with you. I believe that "kitten" beats "corgi".

Brad Knowles

You are all utterly wrong. The best word ever is "corgi".

Ian Wolfe

Claire slowly sliding onto the floor is something i feel on a spiritual level

JD

I'm jealous. I have a Webster's Third and an OED, and neither has a dord :-(

Matt Grayson

I don't think you can hold people accountable when they live up to a stereotype. When white people talk about black people liking fried chicken for example, they're dehumanizing black people. But when an individual black person likes fried chicken, he's just living his life, trying to enjoy what's pleasing to his taste buds without white people getting on his case about it.

Mitchell Sealy

The greatest word ever invented is kääntäjä

ysth

Flong! It follows that a human who so perfectly corresponds to a stereotype as to reinforce and perpetuate it is that stereotype's flong.

As a proud owner of a dord Webster's 2nd, I salute you.

Jon Delfin

How is it pronounced?

JD

And the most self referential word of all: Definiendum - the word being defined in a dictionary entry.

Matt Grayson

Ooh. A useful Scrabble word as well.

Pete Hanson

Hystricine - pertaining to porcupines!

Matt Grayson

It’s no “feamyng” either

Brian

Library reference tool for searching journals. Now that I think of it, I don't recall seeing it advertised in libraries that weren't in a university

Ami

Meanwhile, at dictionary.com: "Why the Hell is 'flong' trending?"

Jamison Town

I'd vote 睡觉(sleep) as the greatest mandarin word.

Ting

What's jstor?
