Ever since hubby and I started using YNAB (You Need a Budget) software, there has been increasing financial harmony and less stress and fights. But we still love our spreadsheets.

Using a spreadsheet to figure out a budget in a world that has sentient robots... OMG. Do they not have open source budget software? Gnucash has a lot of issues, but it's at least designed to handle the job of tracking finances... Oh, and I almost forgot to mention, but doing budget stuff when you are not at a crisis point is much less stressful than doing budgetting at a crisis point, and can help you avoid that stressful crisis point...

Having until recently lived with her mother and been fed nutritious food by her, Claire is unused to the ramen and noodles diet that Marten and Faye occasionally need to rely on. Thus she has yet to learn how to use chopsticks.

I just tried to hire a new baby MLS for a clerk job, and was told she would leave after a few years, and that every time the job comes open, we risk losing it. I wound up with someone less capable who will stay till he dies.

Marten set out to assuage Claire's anxious insecurity, and she has instead made him anxious and insecure. Maybe in that universe library clerk really is a job professionals lust for, and she is right. From here it looks like pointless fretting.

I got through at least my 20s if not my 30s without a formal budget, despite a complete lack of spreadsheet anxiety. Including a period of only slightly over minimum wage. On payday, pay any critical bills due before next payday, fill car (if any) with gas, buy rice or other staple foods sufficient to last to next payday. Pay non-critical bills, and then you're good. As long as nothing goes wrong.
(Of course, I always had health insurance and lived in relatively low-rent areas.)

I like spreadsheets, use them to analyze economic policy, among other things. But, like Brian above, I refuse to budget. I'm just quite careful with my money, and cut back if I find I'm not saving enough. I'm rather generous with others, though, when I can afford to be. But saving is key, however you can manage it.
