I agree. Even though the library manager and assistant positions are SUPPOSED to be student positions, I can see the Board of Trustees deciding to formalise Tai as being a post-grad employee (Marten too) on the grounds that they figure they would prefer changing the rules over the chaos giving the facility over to student control would entail.

Way to spoil the afterglow there, Reed! Basically, Tai has sinecure by way of ambiguously-stated blackmail. If the board of trustees ever changes enough that the couple she caught having sex in the library are no longer in charge, then she is in trouble and so is Marten. Finally, is Jeph giving us a clue to Tai's game plan in the strip title? Is she trying to work off as much of her student loan debt as possible before dipping her toes in the world outside academia?

I love this strip for a multi-layered multiple of reasons. Claire and Martin have been super helpful on my own coming out stuff. Seeing this just invigorates me on many levels.

If I recall correctly there were university some higher ups that got caught using one of the study rooms for non study purposes and while Tai never threatened to blackmail they feared she might and her position has been secure ever since. However, if they retire or take a job at another university the next administrator might do some reorganization which could jeopardize everyone's job..

Or … Claire applies for job and gets it. Marten has crisis, wondering when the ax is coming. Tai, meanwhile, has accepted a different position elsewhere (visiting at Oxford?), and its her job Claire is getting. Hence, Dora is the one who winds up with a crisis.
