Know When To Hold 'Em

Comments

I'd still like to know how many ounces are in a WTF sized Latte.

Mooster

But... Emily DIDN'T make meth in today's comic? *Waaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh*

They were really a couple first (although not declared) and business partners second.

Matt Grayson

I love that DROID 06 made perhaps 2 appearances in the strip, but his spirit live on through Patreon commenters :-)

Andy Sleeper

Oh no

Brian

Another way of phrasing it: if you get romantically involved with a business partner, make sure it doesn't end.

Don't do that to them, Jeph. Happily Ever After... That's what we need. Please.

SARA J DAVIS

Someone probably already pointed it out but there's an apostrophe missing in panel 2

Max S

This is very true. I foolishly took the risk. It didn't end well.

Alcaria Swain

You know, the real question that jumps into my mind is what motivated that bit of advice from Mr Bianchi. I'm sure that there's a tale to tell there! FWIW, panel 2 is an excellent current-style reinterpretation of 'Witchy Goth' Dora from the earliest (pre-500) strips.

Ben Russell-Gough

Given how Dora and Marten's relationship turned out, and what Sven told us about Dora's previous romantic partners, that's STELLAR advice from her dad.

Bagge

Dora settled for getting romantically involved with roommates and friends of business partners.

Bagge

Hunky Dora

Caoimhe Chaos

Well, there is a world of difference between a husband and wife - or any other already established romantic relationship, I suppose - going into business, and two people already in business together suddenly becoming romantically entangled. Romance changes the dynamics of a business relationship, far more dramatically than business changes the dynamics of a marriage. So Dora's Dad's advice really is sound. They key to either one surviving, of course, is being able to leave the romance at home when you go to work, and leave the business at work when you go home.

awgiedawgie

I believe it means it's Dora with the sort of aesthetic she had at the beginning of the strip. The current date in QC-time is deliberately vague, but I just don't think Dora's old enough to have been running Coffee of Doom for fifteen years!

Diptych

Working for friends can turn out badly. At least there's usually sex with romantic involvement between partners.

Brent Catherman

I think I like Gothy 2003 Dora better than Curmudgeon 20XX Dora. ALSO, maybe this isn’t “ominous foreshadowing.” I would think at least Bubbles would be aware of the perils of getting romantic with your business partner. Besides, Dora’s Dad’s advice is actually terrible advice. That would imply every husband and wife or family business, even the Yakuza kind, could never fully succeed because of romance or family bonding.

Miyaa

I don't want it to be sound for those two, but. Yeah.

Stoodmuffin

Awww, look at baby Dora *_*

Kyle Jenkins

Dora's father's advice is actually sound. My father gave me the same advice when I first started working too. It can work out, but based on my observations, that accounts for an extremely small % of instances.

A-DORA-BLE

Fart Captor

DROID 06 TOLD NEVER TO DEVELOP FEELINGS FOR BUILDING BEING DESTROYED.

Matt Grayson

Is that Dora from when you were drawing her at the beginning of the strip, or is it 15 years before the time the comic is set in today, or...?

Ace

Adorable

ysth

I see a looming iceberg awaiting the ship...

Chuck Dee

You need to do what everyone else was doing in 2003!

Grant Swire

Also, sixty-nine dollars for a WTF macchiato? ...nice.

Diptych

I missed Spookybutt-era Dora and didnt even realize it

Alexander W Couzens

Eh, we knew they were taking a risk there. Just about everything about their relationship is uncharted territory. I have faith in them. Plus, it's not like *all* couple-run businesses fail. I mean, family businesses are called family businesses because they're run by families!

Diptych

PLEASE don't have this as foreshadowing. MY SHIP DAMN IT

R L

Faye totally knows Dora just dodged that one.

Shawn K. Younkin

No foreshadowing bad stuff for Fayebles!! No! Bad Jeph, bad!!

Benzy

Jeph knows what he's doing. He's proved that. Not going to interfere... Next extra comic - can we have an all-retro 2003 revisit comic?!

Al Hunt

NOOOOOOO DORRRRAAAAAAAAA NOOOOOOOOO!

Joseph Houk

Eep.

Will Weaver

This x 100.

Andrew Mitchell

This makes me want to go back and reread from the beginner. Been a while since I've done that.

David D.

I'm going to ignore this foreshadowing on principle

Gigglebyte

The Coward of the Coffee. :)

Summer Sudbrink

No no no my ship will not founder on the doomed relationship rocks. Smooth sailing on all seas!

Denise Webber

Jeph, Jeph, Jeph..... if you ruin this for us, if for whatever reason you find a way to break bubbles hydrolic heart or Faye’s battered one.... I have a very particular set of skills, I will find, and I will kill you! But seriously please let them be happy.

Lord Crusade

Looooooooommming Dooooooooom!

Rick W

Think happy thoughts, think happy thoughts, think happy thoughts...

Celine Chamberlin

Ignoring ominous foreshadowing to squee at baby Dora

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo I don't like this foreshadowing
