Some Shit

Comments

The perspective on panel 2 is interesting.

John Ridley

Clintons expression is the best thing ever. Also he's totally evolved to be a super likeable character and I love that.

Esca Makes

With a dad like that, I'd be eating raisin bread every damn day.

Maurice Kessler

That expression is terrifying, well done jeph

Brian

Also really <3 all the Brun-Elliot-Clinton cuteness!!

I really dislike Clinton and Claire's dad, and I don't mind if we never have to meet him. X(

Puppy comics!

Michael Marineau

Depends on the situation, maybe.

Morgan

I'm just trying to peg Elliott as a top or bottom... cant make up my mind..'

Marc Tabor

Having a crush on Clinton is probably kicking the empathy up a notch.

Peter Jensen

Ohana means bread.

Eric Sieck

"I’m sure I’ve got something you’ll like." Yes, Elliott, we're sure you do.

Erin Hartshorn

For someone who works as a bouncer, youd think he'd ascribe more agency to people around him and not take full responsibility for every bad emotion that happens within 10 feet. Empathy is one thing. This is just straight up worrying and anxiety.

Unanimous D

Right, so we need to bring Claire, Tai, Marten, or another library staff person in to teach Elliot how to conduct a reader’s advisory-like service for bread. Way less stressful for Elliot and probably would lead to more sales as well.

LaPrimaNerda (Sarah Davis)

Elliot doesn't realise that all of Clinton's traumatic memories are associated with bread. His beloved childhood dog choked to death on a baguette, a loaf of pumpernickel used to beat him up and steal his lunch money, and his first girlfriend dumped him after an argument over the last piece of toast.

Dean Reilly

Circumstances

Matthew Harris

Everyone has bread-based issues. Bread is all about family, and family is all about fucked up.

William Burns

seeing his face, I WOULD need another drink

Stoodmuffin

If this was at the bar, Brun would have sold him another drink.

Bagge

It feels like the comic equivalent of a split diopter shot in films (which Brian DePalma is a master at, for example). Could it be that?

Ralf Paul

There's something about the second panel that I find especially nice, but I'm not sure exactly what it is. Anyone else notice something similar?

Chris Olstrom

More likely she can tell that Elliot is panicked.

quarridors

FWIW, Claire started actively transitioning (hormone replacement, etc) from when she was about 18. I'm guessing Mr Augustus's departure was connected with her coming out, so this anecdote Clinton just gave may have been less than two years before his departure.

Ben Russell-Gough

It sounds like Clinton and Claire's dad was pretty abusive. I can't blame Brun for being confused. I'm not sure CLINTON knows exactly what he's thinking or feeling, only that he's supposed to be over the fact that his dad was an ass and that, because he's male, he's not supposed to be impacted by any of this anyway.

Ben Russell-Gough

Ha ha!

ysth

Woah. Clinton. Omg. Are you okay?

Stoodmuffin

Holy crap, Clinton. Poor boy. *pets Clinton*

Littleshiro-kun

No, all she knows is that she doesn't know how to parse it. She might worry that it means something bad, but that'd be because she doesn't know it ISN'T

Fart Captor

Or maybe it was PTSD, he never told anyone he was a member of the bakers’ dozen back in the grape war.

Andrew

what's the 50th? so I will never end up there

Minzoku Bokumetsu

Did... he come back 3 days later when the next loaf of bread rose again?

Andrew

To be fair, unexpected raisins are considered grounds for divorce in 49/50 states...

Verteiron

I think Elliot must be cursed. He has a remarkable ability to say the most innocuous thing and yet somehow it is also the worst possible thing to say at that moment.

Populuxe

She can tell that something's up with that facial expression though, so that's something. Better off than some people.

Mitchell Sealy

The title refers back to the note on 3773: "The Augustus household has seen some shit."

Oh! That reminds me: Emily exists IRL and lives in San Diego! Last weekend I met a tall Asian lady with a PhD who's a total goof. She'd see something perfectly normal then riff on it until it became strange and unusual (as many things are wont to do when too closely examined). A favorite conversational mode of mine, that unfortunately rarely gets the girl. We had much fun that evening, getting many richly deserved strange glances. If only she weren't 30 years younger than me AND half my age.

BobC

Well, now we have some numbers to work with. Mr. Augustus was still with the family when Clinton was 12. Claire is ~2 years older than Clinton, so she would have been 14. She’s in her mid twenties now (?) so her dad has been gone no longer than 8-9 years, but probably less. Wow. The Augustuses have really been thru the big waterfall, with Clinton’s hand, Claire’s transition, mom and dads divorce... so the complex friend clan they’ve stumbled into is actually the most STABLE group they’ve been in for some years.

Holly Nelson

Wow. Their dad had issues.

Gary Walker

Could be worse, he could be a Dumbing Of Age character.

Captain Button

No no that is the F.I.N.E smile.

Paul Rendell

Brun must realize something is up with Clinton to have made comment.

And so it did. Good call. :)

Comic 3775 DID say there would be a fight over cinnamon raisin. xD

Sara Grace

...Oh, Clinton baby. Are you part of the "My dad is a flaming heap of garbage" club? Hugs for you.

Morgan

I guess Niagara Falls isn't too far away from Massachusetts..

Zach Elwyn

Whelp

Honestly, it wasn't much of a stretch. One of the earliest comics we had with Claire involved her getting into a brief misunderstanding about cheating when she found out that Dora was dating Tai after she dated Marten - when she apologized, she mentioned that she was rather sensitive about cheating because their father had cheated on her mom.

Lucanid Landman

I think I'm with Brun on this one

Rick W

LOL- he and Claire have some awesome "everything is fine" expressions!

Shawn K. Younkin

Oh no, Clin-ton 😟

Fart Captor

That's the psychotic everything is *not* fine smile

Kyle Major

Never been seen.

William Hanna

I love this comic so fucking much.

Raisin Bread! Slowly I turned, step by step, inch by inch ...

Captain Button

i just realized that we've never seen the twins' dad or have i missed that at all?

Cave

wow no wonder their mom's a cougar now.

The Shadow's Lair

I would now like some cinnamon raisin bread.

William Hanna

So, their dad is trash. Good to know.

Mordaeus

BOOOOOOOOOOO!

William Hanna

Clairely the Augustus family is renowned for that facial expression.
