It has been said that the bridge instrument that would have been most useful on the Enterprise would have been an episode start detector :)

Overall quite high. In fact one of the main limiting factors for electronics devices right now is that they can't shrink the circuits much further without electrons (electricity) tunneling from one part of the circuit to another so even with current technology there's probably tunneling events happening all the time (just not enough to break logic in our devices). Clinton's robot hand could have actually been the trigger as the well since it probably connects to his nerves somehow which would require ultra thin wiring.

Anybody else think "Gross Existential Negligence" would make a great title for Jeph's next webcomic?

Wow! That's a frighteningly precise assessment.
The bar literally existed to catch on fire, to advance the story Jeph is telling, and the firefighters caught on to that? How profoundly insightful. No wonder Hanners is into them.

Vulgar headcanon warning:
It will turn out that Brun can't bear to be touched, except by Clinton's robot hand. This will lead Clinton to have more and more of himself replaced by robot parts, to their mutual joy and gratification. Jeph will be perfectly discreet about this, and no one will ever know.
2018-07-01 17:37:14 +0000 UTC
I am obtuse, and took a while to realize that what Brun is saying here is not "Thank you for telling the truth about how we would never have been friends," but rather "Thank you for telling the truth about how you were feeling back at the bar then, so that we could become friends."
This is why Elliott is not going to wind up with Brun. He can't just come out and say what he feels. Clinton's brashness, which has gotten him in trouble in every other part of his life, is going to make him sufficiently bold and direct that he can make himself understood to Brun.
Also, duh, this is why Brun likes Renee. Renee is loud and direct enough that Brun can figure out what is up with her.

I don't think they're saying the building burning down was an "Act of God." I think they're saying it was an "Act of God" it took so long for the building to finally burn down.

Is that what insurance companies are calling "Acts of God" these days? Yeesh, laws are made to require people to buy insurance for a variety of things, but no laws requiring the insurance companies to act in good faith, (if such a thing could actually happen, of course). To be fair, though, the last time I made an insurance claim (personal items insurance on my truck), they were pretty on the ball. The only issue I had was when I was claiming my $2000 folding bicycle and they wanted to pro-rate it's cost. I had to point out to them I hadn't even owned the bicycle for two weeks (backed by receipts) when the truck accident that wrecked it happened.

Folks investigating the fire quickly switched from enumerating probable causes to trying to find the reason the place had not torched itself up to that point.... That left them pondering if there was some reason the place *needed* to exist up to that point.... They concluded that it seemed to only have existed to be a plot device in a larger narative. After this case, most of the team investigating was forced to quit and head off seeking the nature of their own existence.

It provides pet insurance for your Schrodinger's cat. But you have to collapse the quantum state before you can make a claim.

I don't think she's worried about their friendship. I think she meant "Thank you for telling the truth... about your feelings, instead of trying to hide them." Of course, I could be wrong.

As someone whose mind works a lot like Brun's, I don't think she'll have those kinds of concerns. Of course, everyone's different, so no telling how it'll go from here.

I don't think that she ever really expected that. It was just a source of stress and annoyance to her that things after the fire didn't return to the pre-fire status quo.

In other words, someone in that bar could literally have snapped their fingers and caused the place to burn down. Which, when you think about it, would have been terrifyingly cool.
Meanwhile, I think that poor Brun is now worrying that there has to be something wrong with her friendship with Clinton, as it was originally started by him being mad at his sister. Does that mean that this friendship is a bad thing? It's so difficult for her to work these things out!
